I wish I could be as confident.
Today on CBS’ Face the Nation, two senior Senators, one a Democrat and the other a Republican, on the Senate Finance Committee offered widely different assessments on how the final health care reform package would look. Not surprising, the object of their discord was the public option in the US health care reform proposals now working their way through the Senate.
Senator Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat, was emphatic. "Make no mistake about it, the president is for this strongly. There will be a public option in the final bill." Naturally, Iowa’s Republican Senator Chuck Grassley begged to differ. "The federal government is in the process of nationalizing banks, nationalizing General Motors. I’m going to make sure we don’t nationalize health insurance and [the] public option is the first step to doing that," countered Senator Grassley.

About Firedoglake
Senator Grassley, beg to differ as well. In November your Torture Party lost. Your opinion does not count.
Mornin’, BT
Grassley’s YouTube from the other day speaks louder than his pontificating on the bubblehead shows.
The banks and General Motors were failing (or, in reality, had already failed) and so they were “bailed out”, on the backs of everyone. The insurance companies have been thriving, on the backs of everyone, and so Grassley wants to see to it that the insurance companies are able to continue their monopoly?
Really Senator fine repay the tax payers every Penny you and your family billed the government for health insurance with interest!
PLEASE,PLEASE ANYONE WHO has anytime…help us make calls and emails

please for the horsies
too bad Teddy had to get the tumor…fate missed its mark
$ 1.4 dollars a day spent on lobbying? Give back ALL THAT CASH Senator Chuck Grassley NOW!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..id=topnews
That would be $1.4 million per day. Some of our congressmorons could prolly be bought for $1.40 a day but not many.
WE spend as a society more money than any other country on a Private Healthcare System.
We do not even insure Everyone in our country despite all the money we spend.
Other countries with Public healthcare Spend Less Money than we do Insure EVERYBODY and get this Senator Chuck Grassley The people in those countries live longer than us!
70% of the American people want National Healthcare Senator! You and Congress however seem to want 1.4 million a day from the Healthcare industry!
wellpoint has 71% of the iowa health care market. that’s a competitive model?
grassley has received more than 600k from health and insurance industries in the 2010 election cycle.
nothing to see here.
iowa has 3 million people.
i think their CEO,took home a cool 100,000,000.00
nice job Brrownie
and nearly $3 million over his career, which began in 1989 january.
that’s a big jump to fight the public option.
Morning BT and Pups.
Sen. Gra$$ley has, I fear, never failed to disappointment me, every time he has attempted to raise his stentoriated pompadour above the rest of our unwashed masses.
Is he to be admired more than liarman? Toss-up. evil of 2 lessers, as John Chancellor said oncet, eons ago.
The best way to approach the Grassleys of the world is the same one he faced somewhere at a town hall over the last week.
He was asked (I’m paraphrasing) “Why can’t we have the same health care you get?”
His answer was “You can — get a job with the government!”
Continue to force the bastards into ridiculous answers like that in public.
We have a public option in mail delivery and that industry works quite well. We don’t have public options in telecommunications and medicine, and those U.S. industries suck compared to the rest of industrialized world. Hmmmmmmm.
Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40″The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
41″Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44″They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45″He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46″Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

My bold The GOPers are going to hell for this one HELL HELL! I say They have taken Judas’s Silver Pieces. They have taken the World that the Devil first offered Christ when he was tempted!
It is time to throw the Money Changers out of the Temple!
“Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ [that Jesus is the Messiah]; and shall deceive many.”

Tell Me who has fought for the Poor to be Fed and Clothed? Who has fought for Prisoners and Against the Death Penalty (I think after the Crucification we can guess JC’s views on that issue)
Who now fights to help the sick.
And ask yourself who stands against us? Not a one of whom has a better chance than a camel of going through the eye of a needle.
There was a time we had real journalists. Now we have courtiers.
Hey, Katherine, if I get somebody to come up with $25K can I have din-din at your house?
Sorry 1.4 Million Thanks for the correction
democracynow just finished a piece on Honduras coup. Turns out the U.S. is not obeying its own laws about cutting off aid after a coup. All talk and no action. Why am I not surprised. U.S. trained general who now claims to be prez.
BWAHAHA stuff like that is what we need on the news and on you tube:)
Marisa over at Campaign Silo isn’t so confident either. Seems Chuck later “clarified” his remarks to the AP.
Says Marisa:
She’s right. Schumer & Co. need to hear about it, especially from his their constituents.
Phone calls have to be made, people.
Today our sweet kitties go to visit the dear lady we got them from, so-as to remove them from the direct path of our whirlwind during the worst of our moving madness. We’re in for a lecture. The little fella is now 18 lb. and his dainty sis is 14(!) We’ll miss them terribly, even though we’ll be separated only for 3 days and change. Sweet tigers are like that. They quickly gain direct access to the unwary heart, sigh.
I wish we could loan some of their robust health to Gigi. How’s she doing, Dragon? We’re all pulling for her.
at every turn im disapointed
The 32% increase in insurance premiums from Anthem Blue Cross in Connecticut is being reviewed by the insurance czar in the State.
32%. For me – that’s an increase from 554 dollars a month to 781 dollars a month. With no improvement in coverage.
The only way to make these idiots in Congress understand the problem is to revoke the Federal healthcare plan they all enjoy.
There’s another way too: vote those idiots out and vote in people who understand the problem, firsthand.
Since Grassly is philosophically opposed to a “public option” he should be asked if he is willing to give up his public healthcare plan afforded to the elites in the House and Senate. Anyone calling his office?
I’m not disappointed. My expectations for Obama were very low and he’s meeting them.
In saner times, when the oligarchs so flagrantly flaunted the will of the people, the public found a way to show its displeasure (storming the Bastille, etc.). With over 70% of Americans wanting a public health care option, flailing your middle dexter to the public indicates you might be seeking an appointment with Dr. Guillotin.
ok must go to phones…love yall
remember to help them

Agreed We should be sending fighter planes in support of the exiled President. Not Cash to the Pretender.
Anyone else finding gremlins prowling the toobz today? Weird stuff be a-happenin’ here. Whole thread just went “poof”. Now it’s back. No reason. No apologies. No pop-up windas. Nuttin.
Ah well. I’m only sittin’ here typing gibberish so the kits won’t get suspicious at the sound of the car revving up a tad early. The lil’ girl has special sensory feelers about such nonsense.
Have a successful day Pups. May Grassley suddenly find true wisdom that outweighs the extra change jingling in his pockets.
1 in every $348.00 spent on Healthcare goes in her pocket
I guess I gotta go pups, a-fore this machine quits for good.
Sadlyyes: You bet! That news made me sick. Signed the petition and hoping for some wisdom to yank Salazar’s earlobe, HARD.
eCAHN: I hope you can find some good news to celebrate apart from the soiled remains of the day. Sometimes it’s powerful hard.
Time to pack s’more. I sure look fwd to spending more quality time with you pups. But there’s no point in trying, till we get where we’re going and moved in passing fair. ;->
Grassley’s town hall on you tube…
Dragon 18: Yep. We won’t forget…
Hmm did anyone hear from the tea baggers this fourth? Funny an anti tax movement was not up in arms Nationally as National Healthcare is being debated which does mean more taxes for the rich.
But after the bank bailout they can afford it. I mean $1.4 million a day how much of that is bailout money?
How many people could have gotten Healthcare for that?
The Tea baggers the Brown Shirts were never grass roots they were a Faux News Media Creation created to show *cough * popular dissent against Obama and National Healthcare.
Too bad we got 70% support on this issue and if anything Obama is not Left enough on the issue so like FDR lets make him:)
On Hullabaloo there was a picture of one of the Teabaggers holding up a sign that read, “Welcome to Sweden!” Americans should be so lucky.
Mika is not a feminist (she just admitted this!). Well, of course she isn’t because she supports Sarah Palin!
Okay, going to work with the rest of the schmucks of America. ;-)
a gold plated walk back – now with more yummy bi-partisanshit and co ops !
fyi to those who haven’t been making calls – co ops are being proposed as a means to show public plans fail (they’re proposed as regional entities with no national purchasing power) nudge, nudge
Gigi has gained a whopping 6 ounces since Friday. She gets 1/2 can (Fancy Feast), liquified in da blender, 4 times a day. Sure am glad I had experience with tube feeding with Yang. There’s just something about squirting food and water into a tube. Use a syringe looks like it came from a mad scientist flick, but no needle. My big worry is what we do after she’s had her xrays, tumor or no tumor. Thanks for asking.
Thanks bookmarked! When Senator Grassley said get a government job when his Voter asked how do I get the same healthcare as you I thought “Animal Farm ” Some people are more equal than others.
Best watch that weight on those tigers, Adie. Overweight tigers is a fast ride to diabetes and take it from me it isn’t any fun. Yang’s diabetes was caused by allergy shots containing steriods. Another bugaboo.
Be happy you have a job. Being unemployed in this environment is not as glamorous and fabulous as it may seem.
And this is a general comment about being unemployed not a flame tossed at ya.
Hmm from
Yes we canto Yes We Should have National Healthcare we deserve it all the other cool countries have it and it saves them money.Only losers need to make money by ripping people off. Only Sick Losers enjoy it and yes I’m looking at you Senator Grassley.
Actually, NPR is wrong — aid has been put “on pause”, to be restored when Zelaya is restored: http://narcosphere.narconews.c…..inst-world
note how out of touch Senator Antoinette is –
he initially tells the questioner to go work for John Deere – ’cause they don’t charge anything for health insurance’
Dubuque Plant laid off 200 workers in Feb
Ottumwa Plant to lay off all 494 of it’s employees
corn fed pig
My expectations were quite low, especially after his FISA double cross. But still he has been significantly worse than my expectations. So far as I can tell, the only entrenched interest he has stood up to is the Israelis, but so far that has been in words only. He has gone out of his way to assure all other interests that business will be “as usual” under his administration.
My heart goes out to you. Just dodged a bullet here when 28% of my company got axed two weeks ago. Some worked here over 15 years.
SD, Good Morning….Angela thinks she is home and climb on everything in every room….I know…you warned me. Would you please tell me more about Gigi? I know she is home, and I hope she is doing well. What did the vet tell you? I missed that part. Cheers for you both.
What irritates me is that all the folks who want single-payer, yet refuse to call their congresscritters to demand it, use their disdain for the public option as an excuse not to work for either SP or the PO (even though a good PO would eventually result in SP as it would kill off the private plans).
Actually, aid to Honduras has been put “on pause” until Zelaya is restored: http://narcosphere.narconews.c…..inst-world
Are Iowans paying attention to what he’s saying? Why aren’t they up in arms?
democracynow doesn’t really have any understanding of the situation…what happened in Honduras is not really a coup…the military seizure and arrest of Zelaya was ordered by the Honduran Supreme Court and is legal under the Honduran Constitution.
Right? probably not, but it doesn’t classify as a traditional coup.
We had 2 in Austin…one with the “Plumber” and one at the Capitol with the Gov…Joe talked about get out of America if you don’t like it. His looked like scarce ##s. Maybe more at the Capitol…the most coverage was booos for Cornyn ‘cuz “you’re not one of us” and stupid. (But he just started his 2nd term) ;(
Morning All,
RIP? Robert Mcnamara
Seems like it is the rethugs that don’t like america these days.
interesting that he got that question at all in such a Grassley-friendly setting – looks like they are just beginning to have that discussion in IA
Mornin, RevBev. See my 40. Her weight was down to 4lb 13 oz Thursday afternoon. Vet wants to put at least a pound on her before xrays of head. He suspects a neurological problem and wants to r/o tumor first. He’s well respected in the vet community and I suspect he’ll have some nice feline neurologist over for lunch and a look at Gigi. Had an opthomologist (sp) look at her eye when this first started at the first of the year. No cost. He really shows his stuff when the out of the ordinary shows up. And my tigers seem to fit that bill.
Seems like it’s mutual as well….at last.
I had an instant gut reaction to Obama that he’s a really bad dude. Without any evidence whatsoever. Then the evidence started to accumulate. FISA reversal was the first big one. For me, his launching a third U.S. war against Islam, and creating 1-2 million more refugees in the process, is the most important one to date. But his crooked economics team is certainly high on the list.
Over my life, I’ve learned that my instant negative reactions tend to be pretty accurate. On the other side, not so great: many of my idols have turned out to have feet of clay.
His middle name is Strange. You can’t make that stuff up.
Another one for that special place. Have a nice chat with Colby, McNamara.
third US war against Islam?
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan.
I slipped past “irritated” early last week. indulged myself one little STFU and Dial! rant . . . but recovered and hit the phones
baffling that some can not see the purpose of the current Whip Action, let alone it’s effect to date is lost on them
I’m off to take advantage of another day of glorious weather. Be well.
Fixed it for ya. And ya can prolly count on our resident troll to add his worthless bit at about 9:30 ET or so.
A-yep. The only way we’ll get SP is if we get PO first — and the only way we’ll get that is to whip it. If you favor SP, tell your congresscritter that SP is the goal, and that you think PO is already a compromise — that helps to push the goalposts in the right direction.
Who are you calling? (I think Im right about where you are.)
if the current plan of attack is good enough for Bernie Sanders, it should be good enough for all of us period
I have been calling everybody on The Hot 100 list in the Whip Tool
interesting that I didn’t get any of the “are you a constituent?” bs until late in the week – which I take as a sign that they are feeling the pressure
to the phones ‘Dogs !!!
who are you talking about? talking about single payer, having questions and/or misgivings about a public option in a multi payer system does NOT mean the very same people are not ALSO making calls and talking other actions.
jeeze.
cbl2, i love you but i REALLY disagree with your comment.
1. not a ditto head here. since when is it wrong to have serious questions and/or reservations and ask to have those questions/reservations addressed?
2. bernie sanders has also said we need a movement in support of single payer.
Like everyone else on FDL, I want single payer and, in its absence, support a robust public option. However, it seems like some commentors believe senators and congressmen get the benefit free medical care supplied completely by the tax payers. Active duty military people do, but that doesn’t describe the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB)Program in which civil servants, congressmen, and senators participate.
What they participate in is a marketplace, in which they can select among policies offered by participating insurance companies, HMO’s, and PPO’s. It’s the marketplace in Obama’s concept of a national program. It does not include anything like a public option in which the government would operate a not-for-profit health program. In the FEHB, once the civil servant or congressman selects an insurance program, the employer (government) pays about half of the cost of the premiums and the employee pays the other half. The program has the benefit of volume consumption and employer contribution of half the cost.
I just don’t want anyone losing arguments to wingnuts by arguing that congressmen and senators get free medical.
I hope BT writes about the crowd size now compared to the first Tea Bagger protests:)
right back at ya. of course you’re not a ditto-head . I don’t think it’s wrong to have questions or reservations, was merely pointing out Senator Sanders’ reality-based approach to the current debate
there is nothing in the current Whip Action that should make any SP advocate feel compromised – I said it on another thread – I see the current action as Tactical, we are attempting to build a backstop against the usual compromise/bailout trap
completely agree re backstop and have been making calls in support of that effort.
i also agree with crosstimbers’ statement @75 “I want single payer and, in its absence, support a robust public option”
but i also have massive questions and reservations about public option approach — even if “robust” — both policy wise and in other respects.
these positions are not mutually exclusive and i object to comments like @50 that imply otherwise.
eCAHN at #27, #60 & #61.
Here we go… I like you, honest. I respect you. But, ya know somethin?
Some of us who try to stay silent on the subject GET IT! Okay?!?!
In my experience, yes, as a MS in Ethology from Cornell’s Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, published a couple times, and a lil’ more. yadda yadda yadda…
People who seem determined to hang on, tooth and nail to a 1st negative “gut impression”, come heqq or highinkneedydeedy, SELDOM if EVER seem to find any evidence whatsoever that could possibly challenge that first negative view of which they seem so everlastingly proud.
Just a curious quirk of human nature? Or factsbedammed? or both.
I expect more from you. So, be done with it. Slap me upside the head for being such a pain in the rear and continue as you were. Open mind does not equate to vacant mind. So what’s to become of some of the rest of us?
I seek your pardon. I simply couldn’t keep my dang yap shut any more.
Enough? Isn’t a handful per thread enough? Must we wallow in it?
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have more packing to do.
