Last week, a UN commission held hearings in Gaza, listening for two days as residents described their experience during the Israeli attack six months ago. The stories are horrific – but so are current conditions. As Peter Beaumont reports in the Guardian of his most recent trip to Gaza:
There are changes that I do register in the six months since the war ended. The bodies of dead animals have been removed and cleared away; the ruins have been sifted for human remains. It has expunged the odour of decay that was once tangy with the chemical flavour of explosives and spent phosphorous. The tangled remnants of an orange grove I drove past every day, tipped over and torn by military bull-dozers, has disappeared, razed for firewood.
And without concrete and steel, aluminium and glass, without tiles for roofs and cladding for stairs and bathrooms – all prevented from entering Gaza by Israel’s continuing economic blockade – no rebuilding has begun. For those who suffered most, the war continues.
Beaumont’s article goes on to update the conditions of several families he first visited right after the January cease-fire and each of them will break your heart.
Not only are Gazans still left with no way to rebuild, no way to recover from the attack, but they continue to die from Israeli attacks. On Thursday, a 17 year old Gazan girl, Hyam Ayash, was killed and “three other people were wounded when the shell struck near a house in al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.”
As Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative said during his testimony to the UN delegation:
They [the UN and international community] must deal with Israel the same as they did with the apartheid regime in South Africa. If they don’t, Israel will only increase its crimes and aggression against the children of the Palestinian people.
Instead of sanctions however, the US has invited Israeli Air Force pilots to “take part later this month in a training exercise with the U.S. Air Force at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.” Along with US pilots, the IAF will practice dogfights and in-air refueling. (you may well ask precisely what mission the IAF believes it is preparing for?)
And all that money pledged months ago with so much fanfair by our new administration to help the people of Gaza? Gideon Levy gives us the update in Haaretz:
The $2 billion promised with much ceremony at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit about six months ago – of it $900 million from the new America under President Barack Obama – is lying in vaults at the international banks. A senior American diplomat explained a few days ago that his country is not transferring the money "because Israel is objecting," and an American law prohibits trading with Hamas. He said this in utter seriousness, as if there were no American commitment to transfer the money, and as if the great America were dependent on Israel.
For the people of Gaza, some things do change – they just keep getting worse.

$900 million lying in vaults? That is crazy making.
(I don’t see a recommend button). Definitely the tail wagging the dog.
So, what’s that highly paid special envoy to the ME doing about getting the $900 million pried loose? Why is our government afraid of Israel? Is it the Israeli lobby with its campaign $$$$$, or have they threatened to blow up the planet if we make reasonable demands of them — Armeggedon? As the Chosen are they to be the only one raptured?
I’m really sick of the insanity holding sway over the world.
I wish we’d pay attention to the promises we keep making to other countries. Continuing to ignore them will surely be a discredit to this (and future) administrations, and particularly to those who make the promises they proceed to ignore.
As for not transferring the money to Gaza, after having promised it: that’s a chickenshit excuse. They knew about Hamas when they promised the money.
nytimes tonight:
But in a rare foray into one of the most sensitive issues in the Middle East, the vice president argued that the United States cannot order Israel not to strike the plants at the heart of Iran’s nuclear program if Israeli leaders determine “that they’re existentially threatened” by the prospect that Iran would gain nuclear weapons capability.
That is an interesting quote, eh?
it’s right up there with some of the worst news i’ve heard yet about the neocon/israel agenda for iran.
Also “crazy making” From 30 June Democracy Now headlines:
“Ahead of US Meeting, Israel Annexes New {more} West Bank Land, Announces New Settlement Construction
The Israeli government has announced plans to expropriate a new swath of the occupied West Bank. Israel says it will take fifty-four square miles of Palestinian land, including shoreline near the Dead Sea. Palestinians will have forty-five days to contest the seizure in an Israeli court. A Palestinian cabinet minister called the move Israel’s single largest land takeover since it occupied the West Bank and Gaza in the 1967 war. The Israeli government, meanwhile, has authorized the construction of new homes in the West Bank settlement of Adam. The building plans are the latest in Israel’s rejection of President Obama’s call to stop settlement expansion. They come on the eve of Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s visit to Washington for talks with US officials. Obama has so far refused to apply any meaningful pressure on Israel, including the suspension of billions of dollars in annual US aid.”

Question: If Israel launches an unprovoked attack against Iran, and Iran fights back, does the US then have to “defend” Israel?
That would likely be the claim – but the US would also have to deal with a powerful reaction within Iraq.
Guess greenwarrior at #4 has told us what’s next in the never-ending nightmare…
thanks siun for actually informing us about news in the world as opposed to the mind-numbing media drivel.
i was surprised that news of Cynthia McKinney, who was attempting to alleviate the suffering of the Gazans and thereby arrested and is presently incarcerated by Israel, hasn’t made it past the right-wing,left-wing assisted noise machine.
even Ha’aretz has not mentioned one word of it.
unfortunately, since nothing ever changes in Gaza (most likely due to the special relationship that Israel has with the U.S.A. (united scumbags of abomination)), nothing long-term will be done, except for photo-shoot opportunities for Mr. Obama and Israeli perceived defiance of the U.S.A. in Israeli media outlets.
It seems to me that we should amend the Constitution to allow the Israeli parliment (the Knesset) to impeach and remove US government officials, including, but not limited to the President and members of the House, Senate, and the Supreme Court. We should recognize that the government of Israel already has veto power over the US – we should recognize this in the Constitution. We could make torture legal at the same time, and allow any search and/or seizure and repeal habeus corpus and bring the Obama administration within US practice and law.
i cannot convey to you how much i did not want to put those two items of info together, how much i do not want any more of american and american-sanctioned war in the middle east. it’s really breaking my heart. i hold both american and israeli citizenship. i’m way beyond dismayed.
Haaretz is covering the jailing of Mairead Corrigan Maquire as well as Cynthia McKinney right now:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1098033.html
And delete the war declaration entries.. since we just wage needless war without ever declaring them.

The Wapo, and the NYT also.
The Haaretz story is from July 1
thanks siun and macaquerman for the early info and updates.
Thanks!
Quite respectfully I say this to all the pro-Israeli people: as long as the American Congress -in particular the Democrats, are owned by Israel and put Israeli interests first before the American citizens I will never ever vote for another Jew in Congress nor will I buy any product associated with Israel. I’m also so ashamed by Reid’s leadership in the Senate I will never support another Democrat again
Israelis have turned bestial while American dollars soak in their bloodletting = we’ve become their pimps.
So much for obama’s tough talk about israel must stop expanding settlements so peace can move foward. Everyone knew obama was blowing hot air as a domestic political move. israel’s government and sycophants hate Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein because they simply point out the truth using the israeli leadership’s own words.
You and x174 are both very welcome.
As long as you can’t differentiate between Israelis and American Jews, I somewhat respectfully suggest that you’re perfectly welcome to select your favorite candidates by making sure that they practice religions of which you approve.
If it were Iran,Syria or Egypt treating a small strip of ME real estate populated by ME humans of the Jewish faith in ways similar to how Israel is mistreating or punishing Gazans the Americans would be doing what then?
Joe Biden evidently is getting the green light from Obama WH/WashingtonDC to have pronounced the American blessing on Israeli/IAF attacks on Iranian atomic sites being there thus far has been no walk back or smack down of his comment regarding American impotence over Israel.
Interesting how Israel is accorded this American “what leash?” attitude regarding sovereignity but Iran which is in compliance with atomic treaties for atomic power is at full risk for also exercising sovereignity.
In review again–Israel has illegal, treaty non-compliant atomic weapons which Americans clearly condone and is now told by American VP that Israeli sovereignity trumps WashingtonDC’s powers of the leash. Israel fully sups of yearly American $$ transfers in the billions and partakes of American military hardware and parts supply on regular basis.
WashingtonDC cannot stop Israel however. Odd that.
What WashingtonDC is letting Israel do and get away with in West Bank,Jerusalem and Gaza is full mockery of American preening about what it stands for in ME or other other parts of Asia.
President Obama has not denounced what Israel did to Gaza in late 2008 and evidently cannot or will not do much about ongoing Israeli occupation and war crimes in West Bank or Gaza despite the illegality of Israeli conduct.
The portents of what is to come are now being revealed and a attack on Iranian atomic sites no matter what the facts or record show regarding this bellicose laden premise will take place.
Barack Obama is betraying true and long term American interests with his pandering to and placating of Israel. He in effect is no different than the guy he replaced in the WH. There is and will be no shame over doing so.
Attacking Iran will open upon far worst outcome than what was seen in doing so with Iraq. Americans are broke as is(see California or ongoing American healthcare debacle) and are about to let the fuse for much greater conflict across ME to be lit. American militarism is now out of control and letting Israel plunge America into wider ME breakdown and endless conflict surely the full measure of American mendacity.
1. go into Palestine.
2. choose 5 old grandmothers with children that are agreed to be clean honest and honorable.
3. check with the zionists that these are truly human beings and they agree that they are humans.
4. Give each of the old women a home in Israel with a built in A bomb and a hammer.
5. No more middle east bullshit, ever.
6. This is absolutely no different than the rogue state of America holding 15000 deteriorating nuclear devices for “protection.” So skip the sophistry, just do it.
Thanks siun.
From this issue of Time Magazine:
http://www.time.com/time/world…..d=tsmodule
Does Israel Mistreat Palestinian Child Prisoners? It is heartbreaking and confounding.
And Obama just handed over to Israel $2.775 billion for whatever, nuclear proliferation included. Israel won’t sign the Nonprolif Treaty. Iran has. America’s unconditional cronyism. That continues to confound.
