While trying to make a virtue of what might have been necessity on her part, Sarah Palin takes dead aim at the actions of fellow governor, Republican and presidential wannabee, Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty:
So that Alaska may progress, I will not seek reelection as governor. And so, as I thought about this announcement that I wouldn’t run for reelection, and what that means for Alaska, I thought well about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks – travel around their state, maybe travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international diplomatic trade missions, so many politicians do that. Then I thought that’s what’s wrong – many just expect that lame duck status, they draw a pay check and milk it and I’m not going to put Alaskans through that.
In order for this to make sense, you have to know a couple of things:
1) Tim Pawlenty thinks he’s a good friend and protégé of John McCain, and he thought last year that this made him a lock to be McCain’s running mate. Sarah Palin, who as we all know is not above getting off a few zingers at her political rivals, was rubbing it into Pawlenty’s skin that McCain picked her and not him.
2) Well before he officially announced that he was not going to seek re-election as governor in 2010, Tim Pawlenty started hitting the rubber-chicken circuit, getting his name out to Republican primary voters (and donors) outside of the state of Minnesota. Not that Smilin’ Tim didn’t have wandering feet before then. His out-of-state travel in 2008, when he was busy stumping for John McCain (and working to cadge a running-mate spot on the McCain ticket, as well as preparing the ground for a 2012 run), raised some eyebrows in Minnesota: During the first three months of last year, he was out of the state one of every three days. He’s been criticized for using his trips to avoid meeting with legislators on things like the state budget — instead, he just rejects their proposals and rules by dictatorial fiat, unalloting as he goes.
Yes, the zings about travel could also be said to be directed at Argentine aficionado Mark Sanford, who like Palin and Pawlenty is a governor who has — or had — Republican presidential aspirations. But he’s dead meat now; there’s no need for her to waste ammo on him. Her main target is T-Paw.
I can’t wait for the 2012 Republican primaries.

Well, yes, PW, let’s add Pawlenty to the list of people she shot at today during her freak show. I thought she was speaking of Mark Bad as I wanna Be Sanford.
But actually it would make sense that SP would shoot at someone perceived as better than her, if she did indeed, as Punaise said, find a Moose Head in her bed.
“overseas international diplomatic trade missions” seemed to me a shot at Mark Sanford as well.
All in all, not good adherence to St Ronnie’s Eleventh Commandment.
Thanks, PW.
Why would anyone want to be president at this point? I have no clue why Obama did. Apparently he thought that rearranging a few chairs would set things right. Real change is going to be thrust upon him economically and it isn’t going to be easy. It is going to be heart wrenching, heart breaking, ugly and dangerous.
I suppose the Sanford, Ensign and Palin take-outs could be the Bush Political Machine clearing the way for Jeb in 2012.
“We need more Trigs!”
Doesn’t that say it all??!!
I think one could hear amongst her crap that she is really saying that she is guilty of whatever and isn’t going to waste taxpayers money on waiting in office as a laughingstock for her conviction and jail time.
Or maybe she slept with Ted Stevens! If that isn’t a crime it certainly should be!!
You cannot be serious. That meandering resignation speech was a box of nails in her political coffin. She needs to be heavily scripted, she can’t think or write her way out of a wet paper bag. Something big is going to drop. Today’s ‘event’ had NOTHING to do with pawlenty or anyone else but palin.
Maybe she was really saying “We need more tricks.”
Or the Mittster.
Actually, she’s a train-wreck in a party of derailment… I can’t think of anyone who would want her in the in crowd throughout an entire primary process.
Given that she’s only 2/3rds through her first term, Palin’s “lame-duck” references make no sense.
Her rambling talking-points-heavy press conference was nothing but a smokescreen. Yes, she’s stupidcrazy, but the lady’s also an incredibly self-absorbed liar.
I’m going with the scandal theory.
BTW TPM has Fox on-air guys rolling back the word “resigned” in favor of “withdrawn” — someone’s spinning hard. So somebody somewhere must still be on Sarah’s side…
Today I thought Tea bags and Joe the plumber would be the news instead Sarah has upstaged them all. Great timing on the GOP’s part to any Tea Bagger goes nuts on their 4 th of July rallies the GOP will say he went nuts over Sarah.
…Or she could serve out her term *without* doing all that stuff, and then point it out repeatedly during the primaries.
Whatever the real reason for her resignation, concern that she might make a shitty lame duck sure as hell isn’t it.
What ever happened with Pawlenty and that bridge that fell? Also any chance Eric Holder will investigate the protesters and press roughed up at the GOP convention?
What could be so bad that a GOPer with an army of lawyers would resign and not fight? Political corruption that Dem caught by the FBI stayed in office for awhile. War Crimes Bush hasn’t even been charged so just what scared Sarah?
The NY Times coverage, exemplified by this precis of Palin’s resignation, is becoming as predictably Village-like as the WaPoop. One item illustrates. Mitchell Blumenthal and Kate Phillips describe contacting GOP and Cheney press flack Mary Matalin (emph. added):
Whereas they accuse Democrats of partisanship by noting that “they”,
citing this comment by Brad Woodhouse, communications director of the Democratic National Committee:
Ms. Palin has been governor two and a half years. She spent much of that out of state, part of it running for the Vice Presidency. She’s left a trail of questions while doing little for her state except increase its legal bills, not even deigning to stay in the capital while her legislature was in session. She now quits just over half-way through her first term. Given her history, Mr. Woodhouse’s comments seem straightforward rather than partisan. It is Ms. Matalin’s unreal optimism that seems partisan.
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes…..alaska/?hp
GHWB endorsed Mitt in 08, don’t forget.
*sputter* But what about Sanford’s bow too…? He’s just as incoherent as Caribou Barbie…! ;-)
Yeah, I think Sarah herself used the word “relegated” with regard to the powers she’s turning over to Sean Parnell. I’m not sure that word means what she thinks it means.
Tina Fey is the only nail needed for Palin’s political coffin.
yep… Mitt/Jeb 2012….. it gives enough time to let the public forget the Bush years and it furthers the mormon agenda….
You assume the GOP still likes Sarah. I’m not sure they ever really did, and it’s pretty obvious she was a major factor in losing the last election. Think of a Bond movie: “Our little time together has had its amusements, Mr. Bond, but I’m afraid you have now become tiresome and we have no further use for you. So I say good bye to you, Mr. Bond.”
Something involving her kids or her husband.
If it was just about her, she would stay and fight. This is much, much bigger and much, much worse that we are now imagining. Like “lose your house because it’s built with illegal materials from the hockey rink” or “kid caught dealing” or “Todd & Mark Sanford” worse.
Maybe they’ll bring the show back next week, for the special occasion.
Matalin is insane.
I mean, look who she married.
Akin to Reagan redux…? ;-)
Pardon me… Where’s my manners…? Aloha Ya’ll…! *g*
I’d guess Tina is practicing the resignation presser right now.
Brilliant huh? is Mary hinting she is willing to work for Sarah? Did Mary see Sarah’s resignation speech?
Will she ramble on as much…? I mean SNL does have time limits on their skits…! ;-)
Bush 41 endorsed McCain
linky
Limpballs and Cheney loved the Mittster
It’ll be funnier shorter. I was tempted to leave about half way thru, but made myself stick it out to the end.
The GOP withdrew all protection just what did Sarah do to piss them off? Larry Craig heck Mark Foley got more protection than she did.
I’m not doubting you but why or just what did she do is my question. When was the last time a GOPer lost Protection Nixon?
Another possible interpretation: We might be seeing a neocon bloc splintering-off within the GOP, MM and Kristol would both be in that, and would both want to keep Sarah for that. But that would also mean that the mainstream GOP would be shedding both her -and- the neocons who love her. That’d be a sight to see.
Aloha CT! Long time no see, I hope you and yours are very well!
I like the interesting thought, Teddy, but I can’t wrap my head around WHO will vote for him to ensure a win or make it close?
GOP will need centrists, indie’s and dem’s to jump.
Despite what might be economic ruin awaiting us all, I can’t see Obama losing it all by ‘12 (even us progs) and folks switching to GOP and Jebby Boy . . . . can the GOP splinter off JUST enough voters from Obama failures to make it close and steal it again? ‘Spose so, but, won’t Obama be CERTAIN to have vote rigging and voter suppression exposed and under adult supervision this time?
So many details . . . and good one’s, coming from you and all the others . . . . thanks to all.
A true hero, indeed…! My better half made me change it 5 mins into it…! I was rather enjoying her implosion…! ;-)
Well, aside from losing a Presidential election and now evidently bringing some very serious criminal investigation down upon herself and thereby besmirching the R brand even worse that it’s already been besmirched, and also (and I think this is key) being almost totally unwilling to take direction from the RNC, I can’t think of a thing she’s done to the Rs…
Those quackers in the background were such a perfect touch; puts me in mind of the turkey grinder.
I think one of the things that freaked the talking heads out the most was the lack of professionalism of the whole production. The villagers are so used to seeing micro-managed political performances that they just flat out couldn’t believe the ineptness. Not to mention they *really* don’t appreciate having their holiday disrupted by something “breaking”.
She is going to spend time with her family so its not Todd she’s circling the wagons kid caught dealing sounds good or they got her taking payoffs to look the other way at meat from American hog farms in Mexico.
What the hell is matalin smokin’ these days?
They are just trying hold onto ad dollars . . . appease the corp base with good old GOP Family/Business Values. The kind that got us to where we are today in this country, ya know, winky. Also. Thereforth.
On rawstory:
BradBlog is now reporting additional information received from Alaskans who follow Palin: “I’ve now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure as Mayor. Both structures, it is said, feature the ’same windows, same wood, same products.’ Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.”
Always with spin, Ms. Matalin still thinks Cheney was a hero.
It doesn’t seem relevant where a reporter reached Ms. Matalin, short of the moon or Cheney’s bedroom. Her comments may be optimistic, but she comes across as partisan. Woodhouse may obviously not be a supporter, but his description is factually more accurate than Matalin’s, though that seems not to fit the frame Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Phillips hammered together. Woodhouse gives us facts, Matalin futurist optimism.
A pity, because much of their summary seems effective. It’s like their tablespoon of hot pepper missed the huevos rancheros and dolloped into a cup of tea.
I thought they provided a more apropo setting than her turkey slaughter…! ;-)
Doing alright! Mahalo for your kokua…! ;-)
Aloha Hoss! It’s still daytime! lol
Bush, Cheney, Rummy the NEOclowns they all did that and the GOP never once tried to stop them. Sarah sadly was their most popular person to take on Obama Jeb and Mitt I’m sure helped take her out but could they be dumb enough to blame her for everything?
I really think the next state Gov to come undone is AZ Gov Jan Brewer…. I really wish you could of seen her last night in her interview…… She is a blond ditz….. she was as secretary of state & when Janet left for DHS…. … the Repugs and the Dems are fed up with her, the state senate president on camera in an interview following the Gov… said “she appears unable to perform the functions of her office”
What did she say …..”tomorrow is another day” “their are rainbows and rainbows” while she grinned like an idiot……
Next in line was a guy who was caught in pedophilia (at a boys camp) but his father (state senate) got him out on the charges…….
Something weaker than whatever Sarah was on today?
Dem or GOPer?
Mahalo nui loa, my friend. Glad you’re well.
She thinks the GOP has a future? Well sure if the Party breaks up now it could reform as a new party free of the taint of Bush/Cheney
The GOP withdrew all protection just what did Sarah do to piss them off?
She’s never been a team player. Look at her record. Even look at the stories they tell about her on the high school basketball team. She doesn’t play well with others.
And I thought Blaggo was bad. Don’t you have a racist sheriff and a prosecutor backing him plus Jon McCain?
Megan McCain is the hope of the AZ GOP’s future?
There is a way I think that we are all still in shock from W-Cheney….a chosen war, total lies, the stolen election, broad criminality, a blind eye to NOLA/Katrina. Pretty amazing…So, who makes any sense? Where are the truthful and wise adults? What a void? Think Jindal, Jeb…maybe we ar at a generational cusp. But who are the ones who sound sane and smart?
Yeah, that was the “not taking direction” part I mentioned too. I do think that’s key. She may be a little too nutso to appreciate that she’s been dealing with some of the very the most powerful people in the world. She seems to think she’s more than that. She’s nuts.
What I hate about it is that the ducks/geese/whatever were in the first part of her ramblings and won’t be seen again after today. Can’t you hear people who’re just catching up on the news wondering why in the name of spit the hairdos are talking about birds quacking? LOL
Interesting how the resignation part was shot against a background of plants. Would indicate there were at least two cameras present……or there was some editing going on somewhere along the line.
Sheldon Frickin’ Whitehouse.
So Palin is a joke. And the elephant is broke. Not to worry. The Democrats are serving with might and main, their champion BO at the forefront of what would be the fray (if there were any opposition) the same interests as the Republicans, but are doing so in a smarter, more effective way. See: torture, finance and the economy, the permanent state of war, health care, gay rights and perhaps, in the end, even choice. (We don’t really know who Sotomayor is but she has been a great friend of corporations and the power of the state against the individual, all her professional like.)
This is kick in the nuts doesn’t play well with others retaliation we should have heard something the Alaska blogs were on Sarah pretty good. Sorry I am just wondering how we could miss something so big Sarah is giving up without a fight or even mentioning/lying about why.
Matalin is like a stock broker in a depression; she’ll always have another great opportunity for you to buy into. As a broker, she makes money when you buy or sell, not just when you make money.
*gasp* Another whiff of a conspiracy…? Seriously, I think she’s resigning because of the DEA raid on her future son-in-law’s house…! BTW, whatever happened to said union…? ;-)
Hate to break the news, darlin’, but I don’t think the thug party has anyone who fits that description. They have taken intelligent design to its final conclusion.
Imagine that…? ;-)
Btw, I’m over at the beach haus too..!
The GOP if they want this story contained should release the reason why Sarah is leaving this holiday weekend.
Yeah didn’t Levy’s mom get busted for meth?
Don’t forget that many of these people are religious fundamentalists. It’s one of the important common threads. And the fundamentalists are in charge in several countries and trying to get to power in other countries. That gives the world a deterministic, anti-science & irrational character. Their personal foibles are explained by the repressive nature of the religion they adhere to, and their inability to live in the straight jacket.
I’m less interested in the personal, and much more in what they’re doing to the country and the world I have to occupy with them.
Dude ! How’s life in paradise ?
That be the case…! I’m telling ya, it’s those cursed federales…!
Hey, Mi Amigo! Long time…! Are ya going to attend the townhall meeting Ed Harris wants to hold in Toronto on Canada’s Healthcare system…! He invited Sen Sherrod Brown to attend…!
Did Levy’s mom avoid jail? Did Sarah Help if the Feds found out that could explain it.
I haven’t heard about it … might be interesting to see who the wingnuts will send to say how bad Canada’s health care system is …
This was while only Huckabee was left in the race against McCain.
What I was thinking of, which was not an endorsement as you say, was Mittens’ big “religion” speech, delivered at GHWB’s liberry with him in attendance.
Master-slave morality is a central theme of Friedrich Nietzsche’s works, in particular the first essay of On the Genealogy of Morality. Nietzsche argued that there were two fundamental types of morality: ‘Master morality’ and ’slave morality’. Master morality weighs actions on a scale of good or bad consequences unlike slave morality which weighs actions on a scale of good or evil intentions. What Nietzsche meant by ‘morality’ deviates from common understanding of this term. For Nietzsche, a particular morality is inseparable from the formation of a particular culture. This means that its language, codes and practices, narratives, and institutions are informed by the struggle between these two types of moral valuation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master-slave_morality
My bold Lizard Brains actions guided by emotion Slave mentality their culture does create a particular morality. The nature of our sins Right and Left are often different as are our triumphs.
We need an Anthropologist.
Heh, this is Ed’s carnival… His mission is to expose the Reich Wing’s hallowed strawman of… “…long waiting lines and disgruntled patients” Should be very instructive indeed…! ;-)
Gov & new secretary of state (we don’t a LT Gov) are both GOP…. we lost huge numbers of state leg democrats in 2008…… it is a weird and radical state….. with a sheriff wacko, tent city and County district attorney who as crooked as can be….. but no one to prosecute….
Forget Canada, Venezuela a third world country is catching up to us in lifespan! Its cause they got National Healthcare.

Maybe Holder can set the feds on him it would help the Hispanic vote literally I’m sure a racist Sheriff and DA do lower voter turnout.
You know, this is odd for a liberal to say, but I love Sarah Palin. Every day that I see her doing something, my heart swells with warmth and I think “Thank you, Sarah Palin, you are destroying the Republican Party.”
It makes my heart giddy with joy.
She’s crazy enough to think she can survive any scandal. Just like Mark Sanford and Larry Craig.
