Who knows all the reasons — Todd and Sarah Palin, presumably fully understand.

Listening to her, it seems like this is a combination of stepping back and moving forward. Stepping back, because it’s way too overwhelming to be Sarah Palin, political phenom, Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, and Sarah Palin, wife and mother. I don’t know that anyone can fulfill all those roles well, simultaneously. And we’re unrealistic, I think, when we assume people can or should.

One reservation I’ve always had about Sarah Palin has to do with her family. If she is stepping down because of what politics has done to her family, because of something in her family life she doesn’t want to see as David Letterman fodder, because it’s impossible to be governor, a star, and a mom to an infant … this is good. It demonstrates good judgment and priorities.

And how does any of that tie to Sarah?

This is getting interestinger by the minute.

Does this mean someone found out who Todd’s contractor “friends” are.

I just checked my Notre Dame football site. Threads about religion or politics are prohibited, but when Spitzer resigned, there were threads all over the place. About 1/2 of the subscribers are anti-choice wingnuts who went nuts when ND “permitted” Obama, the abortionist, on campus. Sarah is very popular with many of them.

There is still not one thread about Palin, which says to me that her resignation is not playing well with wingnuts.

OK, I can’t stand Ron Christie either, but c’mon, nobody is dumber than K Lo. Nobody.

Well, it must be a terrific idea since Bill Kristol says so (via SN!):

If Palin wants to run in 2012, why not do exactly what she announced today? It’s an enormous gamble – but it could be a shrewd one.

After all, she’s freeing herself from the duties of the governorship. Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues – and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska. I suppose she’ll take a hit for leaving the governorship early – but how much of one? She’s probably accomplished most of what she was going to get done as governor, and is leaving a sympatico lieutenant governor in charge.

And haven’t conservatives been lamenting the lack of a national leader? Well, now she’ll try to be that. She may not succeed. Everything rests on her talents, and on her performance. She’ll be under intense and hostile scrutiny, and she’ll have to perform well.

All in all, it’s going to be a high-wire act. The odds are against her pulling it off. But I wouldn’t bet against it.

I’d put money on somebody in the McCain camp probably knew this was coming and got out in front of it to create a firewall between themselves and her. So they dumped to VF, encouraged others to do so in a manner of speaking, so that they were all clear of the blast zone when all fireworks started.

The Huck team — consisting of far-right Christianist fundies — held the GOP hostage in August, demanding that the McCain people pick Huck so that they’d have a fundie on the ticket. They’d stay home election day if they didn’t get their way.

The McCain team flipped them the bird by picking a fundie other than Huck with their selection of Palin, effectively neutering them.

(I remember this well as it happened in Michigan, virtually in my back yard; there was a too-long period between McCain’s meeting with the Hucksters and the day after the DNC convention, where they were radio silent on a veep choice.)

If Huck’s Hucksters hadn’t held the proverbial gun to the head of McCain/GOP, Palin wouldn’t have been the choice but Mittens or T-Paw.

I still want it fixed.”

Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events. In truth, the box that Alaskans have the option of checking when registering to vote states the full name of the party, “Alaskan Independence Party,” not “Alaska Independent,” which would make an error by uncommitted voters more plausible.

Clearly irritated by what he saw as Palin’s attempt to mislead her own campaign and apparently determined to demonstrate that the ultimate authority rested with him, Schmidt put the matter to rest once and for all with a longer response to everyone in the e-mail chain.

“Secession,” he wrote. “It is their entire reason for existence. A cursory examination of the website shows that the party exists for the purpose of seceding from the union. That is the stated goal on the front page of the web site. Our records indicate that todd was a member for seven years. If this is incorrect then we need to understand the discrepancy. The statement you are suggesting be released would be innaccurate. The innaccuracy would bring greater media attention to this matter and be a distraction. My guess…

Obama had somebody contact Palin personally to tell her to put her house in order in preparation for this announcement that is clearly forthcoming about Todd – which once revealed, would have caused her to have to resign from the Governorship. My guess was Domestic Terror.

The Administration provided Palin with a courtesy call so she was not blindsided, prior to being destroyed.
