Mornin’, BT, pups

John Bolton, superhero neocon warmonger (from Wiki):

Though Bolton supported the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the Maryland Army National Guard, but did not serve in Vietnam. He wrote in his Yale 25th reunion book “I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy. I considered the war in Vietnam already lost.”[9] In an interview, Bolton discussed his comment in the reunion book, explaining that he decided to avoid service in Vietnam because “by the time I was about to graduate in 1970, it was clear to me that opponents of the Vietnam War had made it certain we could not prevail, and that I had no great interest in going there to have Teddy Kennedy give it back to the people I might die to take it away from.” [10][11]

Yep, those nasty dfh’s kept the military from winning.

Now he’s urging Israel to strike Iran. Fuck you, Bolton.

Looking at a clip from yesterday’s “town hall,” it seems that Obama’s cure for the U.S. medical care problem is for his office to handle every one on a case by case basis.

This whole “controlled town hall meeting” brouhaha. Why did they do this? Especially after the Mico thing (which was bullshit but it happened). I mean Obama is quite capable of handling questions. Look, I know town halls are really bullshit. This probbaly happens all the time. But why would they do it when it makes them look bad and isn’t necessary?

There was a time when I thought we might kinda miss Sarah Palin and her folks in a twisted, poke-yourself-in-the-eye way. But the woman simply refuses to go away. Note to Republicans: You can do better than this. You have a long history of it. Dan Quayle, for example.

It would seem your 1 and 2 tie together.

Attaturk’s thread downstairs highlights the recent coup in Honduras. History repeats itself. Three months into the Kennedy administration, the CIA (starry Poppy Bush) launched its Bay of Pigs fiasco. TarheelDem asked

Did any rogue elements of the CIA or the US military enable this coup to happen without presidential authorization?

The Bay of Pigs caught Kennedy unaware. He responded forcefully by firing Alland Dulles, the CIA chief. We all know what happened next.

Funny, my contractor (a pink diaper baby) pointed out the Bay of Pigs analogy yesterday. My working hypothesis is that the U.S. behind the Honduras coup, thru SoA proxies, and that Obama knew nothing (and my still know nothing) about it. And yes, it was likely under planning for awhile. Yesterday on democracynow, they pointed out that Zalaya started turning more liberal in 2007 and has complained mightily about U.S. war on drugs. What would the CIA do for funding for their really dirty projects if they couldn’t fund them thru drugs?

Unlike the U.S. backed coup in Venezuela, it seems the people of Honduras are not organized enought to stand up in opposition.

Here is a CAP website, bit flag wavy for me but it has useful info. I don’t think we should have been in Vietnam and I am mixed about Afghanistan but when you look at what the mission on these Marines is they are similar.

“Where we go we will stay, and where we stay, we will hold, build and work toward transition of all security responsibilities to Afghan forces,” Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson said in a statement.

Now I know that many here just want us to di-di tomorrow but it’s not going to happen. Will this work? I don’t know.

You can vote with your pocketbook, too. More money means more voters in AR learn how blanche takes big cash payoffs and votes against providing affordable health care for her constituent’s kids.

The wondrous wonderfulness of Counterinsurgency (COIN) as a panacea appeals greatly to today’s officers. Military officers are always looking to get promoted. They climb onto any “bandwagon” rolling in the right direction. Today the “bandwagon” has “COIN” painted on the side. Tomorrow? Mornin’ BT and Pups.

eCAHN, sorry but I just don’t get it. It seems he’s never gonna win over everyone. If he deals in overarching themes, he’s accused of speaking in meaningless generalities, but if he pulls out a specific example, then he’s pandering and posturing for the cameras alone.

Luckily (imo), he’s strong enough to carry on, providing a mix in his pressers or, as some would have it, pleasing no one.

Danged if e do & danged if e don’t.

I still think his approach seems to show a strong element of encouraging public opinion to build, perhaps, just perhaps, in a rather savvy attempt to steer Congressional action to back up what he wanted to do in the 1st place.

Color me blame plagued w.r.o.n.g. if you want, but I don’t think his plans have played out their inherent potential yet. He does, after all, have a few months left yet before running for re-election.

If the foregoing makes no sense to you, it’s probably because I haven’t even finished 1/2 my coffee yet, and I’m tired. Big, full, productive, exhausting day yestidie, but we now have KEYS to our new abode, and even dared to turn on the refrig.

Long live civil discourse. amen.

Just checked out the site a little bit.

There are many reasons why hearts & minds rarely works, but here’s one I just reading about, from Horne’s Savage War of Peace, the classic on the Algerian war for independence. The insurgents had a deliberate policy of creating horrific events, knowing that the offended French would react with even more horrific retaliations, thus losing hearts & minds. The French also had a program of helping the locals thru school building, increasing their political participation, etc. There’s nothing new about that. (Always too little, too late, though, trying to do things in 1957 that might have worked a decade earlier when the sides of the conflict were not as polarized.)

So one key is how the U.S. responds militarily to Taliban attrocities. So far, civilian casualties look like the French model is the way they’re going. But we’ll see.

I agree. Actually, I would be really surprised if the Debbie lady was a shill. I was wishing that they had actually staged someone who wasn’t asking for immediate help for a situation for which there is no help under current circumstances. It reminds me of the scene in Jesus Christ, Superstar, where he goes into the leper colony. I don’t think it would serve to have him deal with requests for miracles.
