Rahm’s Game Plan: Blackmail Progressives with “Cash For Clunkers”

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 8:55 am

Sources on the Hill say they’ve never seen anything like it coming out of the White House.  Rahm is dealing as furiously as he did during NAFTA, and will stuff everyone with so much pork that they have to vote for the supplemental.

They will evidently try to jam Cash for Clunkers into the conference report –  a $4 billion bid to buy votes from progressives in auto manufacturing states

Marcy Kaptur to Vote “No” on the Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 7:10 am

Marcy Kaptur says she won’t vote for the supplemental.  I guess the bill must really be in some trouble, because Pelosi herself is whipping.

Citizen Whip Count Update: Supplemental Conference Meeting Today

By: Jane Hamsher Thursday June 11, 2009 5:55 am

I just want to take a minute to thank everyone who is taking time out of their day to make calls and stand by their commitment to end the war. When I look over the lists and read about the thousands of calls people are making to the offices of members of congress, and I see people like Toby who called 25 offices in one day, it makes it all worthwhile.

Thank you to everyone who has called, and who continues to call.  It’s a highly fluid situation, and Rahm Emanuel is furiously horse trading for votes.  Sources on the Hill say that they’ve never seen this kind of full-court press from the White House.  Members are being bribed, bullied and cajoled into abandoning their commitment to vote against any war funding that doesn’t include a time table to bring the troops home.

The conference meeting will be at 3pm ET today.   I’ve updated the Whip Tool to include the latest information we have on the vote count.

Please keep the calls coming.

Roll Cameras! Screen Actors Guild Ratifies Contract

By: Lisa Derrick Wednesday June 10, 2009 7:15 pm

Members of the Screen Actors Guild have ratified their television and feature films contract in a 78 to 22 per cent vote, avoiding a strike which would have further devastated the Los Angeles economy–oh heck California’s and the United States’, since entertainment is one of our largest exports.

Production provides tens of thousands of jobs–on sets and on studio lots and has a massive trickle down effect everywhere from agencies and PR firms to car dealerships, restaurants, coffee houses, bookstores, boutiques, service and support personnel, charities and schools–both public and private–which rely on donations from parents to help offset budget cuts.

Kucinich, Woolsey Urge Colleagues to Vote “No” on Supplemental

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday June 10, 2009 6:00 pm

David Swanson reports that Dennis Kucinich and Lynn Woolsey have written a letter (PDF) to the Democrats who voted “no” on the supplemental, urging them to vote “no” on the conference report (which, per Louise Slaughter, will not include the Lieberman photo amendment).

Fifteen members have already said they will not vote for the supplemental, and 11 are leaning “no.” It takes 39 Democrats to stop the bill from passing.

You can use our Whip Tool to find contact information for members who voted “no” on the supplemental, those who committed to vote against any war funding that didn’t contain troop withdrawal provisions, and those who object to the bill because of the IMF provisions.
