The three-part subtitle of Crazy for God sums things up well: “How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped to Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of it Back.” There’s lots to explore in our chat with the author, Frank Schaeffer.

White House Ratchets Up the Pressure on A-List Gays |
| By: Jane Hamsher Sunday June 21, 2009 1:40 pm |
Aravosis:
We found out today that the White House has decided to throw a big gay party at the end of the month. It’s clear that the purpose is two-fold. First, the White House is trying, again, to surround the president with A-list gays in order to show how “gay friendly” he is – he’s even willing to give a speech in a room full of them for a full
Twitter Wins the Week, But Not the War |
| By: Stirling Newberry Sunday June 21, 2009 12:45 pm |
My two Sunday colleagues raise the specter of slavery and The Great Depression respectively. My goal is far more modest; it is to point out why Twitter won the week, but is losing the war in Iran. The reality is that Twitter is a top down medium; and it magnifies, rather than challenges, the top down society.
What Will @jahimes Say About Goldman Sachs Record Bonus Payout? |
| By: Jane Hamsher Sunday June 21, 2009 12:03 pm |
It’s great that Jim Himes has such close relationships with Goldman executives. As someone who sponsored legislation to make sure that the bonus packages of all TARP recipients were tied to company performance, I’m sure Jim will be the first to call for transparency on Goldman’s part and make sure their “surging revenues” are legitimate before they start shelling out these fat chunks of taxpayer dollars during a recession.
The Huffington Post Is Drinking the Washington Post’s Milkshake |
| By: Jane Hamsher Sunday June 21, 2009 11:30 am |
I was more than a little amused yesterday when Fred Hiatt invoked “viewership data” as an excuse for sacking Dan Froomkin, considering they’ve been doing their level best to destroy his readership by burying him in outer blogistan.
Rayne sent along some info on the Washington Post’s online traffic for the past five years, relative to the Huffington Post and the New York Times. The graph above is a Quantcast comparison, which indicates that the Huffingotn Post is eating the WaPo’s lunch, and on its way to eclipsing the New York Times as well.

Slavery and the Health Care Crisis |
| By: Glenn W. Smith Sunday June 21, 2009 9:30 am |
The gravity of America’s health care crisis is the moral equivalent of the 19th Century’s bloody conflict over slavery.
Tehran Protests: Her Name Was Neda (Warning: Extremely Graphic Video) |
| By: Lisa Derrick Sunday June 21, 2009 8:45 am |
The global community has been galvanized by the tweets, Facebook, cellphone pictures, and reports from Iran.
Now comes this video of a young a woman shot in Tehran by Basiji police force.
Times/CBS Poll: Americans Overwhelmingly Ready for Universal Care with Public Health Plan. Where’s Congress? |
| By: Scarecrow Sunday June 21, 2009 7:30 am |
A new Times/CBS poll reveals overwhelming public support for all the essential elements of health care reform, including a robust public health plan option and the right to choose that option and universal coverage even if that means raising taxes.
Why Tom Davis Shouldn’t Be Obama’s Cyberczar |
| By: emptywheel Sunday June 21, 2009 6:46 am |
Reportedly, Obama is considering former GOP Congressman Tom Davis to be his new cyberczar. It strikes me as the height of stupidity to put a guy with a history of politicizing email in charge of the nation’s cybersecurity.
