In the wake of things like the idiotic firing of Dan Froomkin it’s easy to say that Fred Hiatt is solely responsible for the wretchedness of Washington Post editorial page. As easy as such criticism is, it ignores the far deeper problem. For the depth of mendacity goes both up and down the chain of command — after all the Post’s creditors will know that.
I give you Deputy Editor Jackson Diehl:
One Post staffer with whom I spoke about Diehl damned him as a “young David Broder.” “He’s relentless in pursuit of the conventional wisdom,” said the staffer. “He’s about 50 but he writes and thinks like an old man.”
He’d make a great sidekick on Matlock.
And could there be a greater indictment endorsment than this from Hiatt himself?
“I’m happy to say that I have never worked with anybody more intelligent than Jackson Diehl. He is rigorously honest, and I have never seen him reluctant to engage in an argument to defend his position or to take other people’s views on board”
So let us know them as they use one-hand to type their editorials, for today Jackson Diehl criticizes the Obama Administration for asking Israel to stop building settlements in the occupied territories — describing the negotiations over a two-state solution thusly:
…how foolish it would be to squander it over a handful of Israeli apartment houses.
Just a handful of apartment houses…and if that’s the case they serve Israel’s vital interest how?
Thanks for all the "rigorous honesty" Jackson.

About Firedoglake

Textual analysis conclusively shows Chuckles wrote this op ed piece. Else what’s a 20 Mule Team for? Diehl with it.
Good morning, pups. It’s Asshat and Krugman in the NYT today. Pasty little Ross Douthat has a question about “The Way We Love Now:” Have modern American couples let anxieties about children, mortgages and success destroy their passion and romance? This pudgy little slug has serious issues with women and should most certainly STFU about romance. Katha Pollett in The Nation skewers him better than I could. Mr. Krugman says we are “Betraying the Planet,” and that climate change poses a clear and present danger to our way of life. How can anyone justify failing to act?
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. The cold drinks are in the fridge for later. As far as Hiatt and friends, circulation at the WaPo was down before they fired Froomkin. Judging from the comments to Froomkin’s last post at the WaPo they’re about to take another hit. The comments were about 98% pro-Froomkin, and most of those commenters said they were canceling subscriptions or removing bookmarks. That humming sound you hear? Katherine Graham spinning in her grave like a lathe. I’m off to take a shower. I’ve got to scrub the reading of Asshat off. Have a great day.
Slow morning at the lake…
Tap tap tap. Is this thing on? Yoooo hooooo….
This is my third week of not buying the NYT on Sunday (I used to get it solely for the crossword) as it is now $6 here. Interestingly I had a house full of relatives here this week and found that all four family branches no longer purchase the NYT, or any other newspaper. Trashy writing was high on the list of reasons but by far the biggest reason was that we could get more varied and potentially more honest information on line. We did all agree, however, that the NYT should start hiring copy editors. I applaud you Marion for your willingness to read the trash for our benefit!
“Pasty” ? LOL. like that.
a few Israeli apartments?
He ‘toopid.
I don’t even know how much NYT is here. Other than too much.
The usual in The City Beautiful. 79. Humid. 90 later. T-storms.
Big news locally. Billy Mays died. Another 50 year old bites the dust this week. I better watch it. And the Barack Obama figure debuted at WDW Hall of Presidents. Season pass holders got a sneak peek yesterday. I’m not one but it was in all the paper this morning.
Any break from the heat in GA, Marion ? It’s not quite as bad here. We had heat indexes up to 110 last week.
I stopped reading the NYTimes after the Judy Miller affair. As for the WaPo the vultures are circling.
i bought the dead tree version of the nyt during the days i had no electricity (and so no internet access at home) after the roads were cleared and i could drive out (december ice storm). otherwise, i have my favorite reporters on google alerts so i don’t miss them. cost nothing out of pocket and although there are advertisements at least they are not printed.
still some very good reporters at the wapoo like anthony shadid. i will be sad if i can no longer read his reports from the ME. dana priest is very good too.
Swim is upstairs…
RE: “…how foolish it would be to squander it over a handful of Israeli apartment houses.”
*** TELL OBAMA “FREEZE MEANS FREEZE” ***
FROM J STREET: Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of a full settlement freeze, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said…that President Obama “wants to see a stop to settlements – not some settlements, not outposts, not natural-growth exceptions.”
This is exactly the sort of leadership we need from the President and Secretary of State if we are going to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – the only way to truly secure Israel’s future as a Jewish, democratic homeland.
Please send the President a message telling him you support his “Freeze means Freeze” approach to Israeli settlements.
