It has been revealed that the Argentine woman who has been involved in a year long affair with South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is Maria Belen Shapur. She works for Bunge y Born, a multinational agribusiness and grain trading corporation and is fluent in English, Portuguese and Chinese.
Shapur and the governor had known each other for seven years before she became his mistress. She is 43-years-old, has two sons and lives in a 14th floor apartment building in upscale Palermo District, near the Buenos Aires Zoo.
Having an extramarital affair is just not the big deal in cosmopolitan Argentine society that it is in fundamentalist communities of South Carolina. Sanford obviously felt at ease with that value system.
Maybe it’s time for cultural conservatives to start asking if their leaders really are the true believers they claim to be, or just hypocrites willing to pander to them for power. Because that’s frequently what it looks like from the outside, but tribal loyalties trigger such knee jerk defensiveness that those questions never seem to get asked.

They never ask because they are sheep. It was ever thus.
I think the cultural conservatives should mind their own business and leave it at that. Stay the heck out of other people’s lives.
Amen sister! Having grown up in the Bible Belt, none of this hypocrisy is news to me. However, watching this double standard for politicians of different parties, I find particularly galling.
I was most disappointed in the Sanford coverage that no one mentioned Rudy in yesterday’s various recitatives about the political philanderers. At first I thought it was because he was from NYC. Oh wait, Spitzer…
Let’s see if this generates over 300 comments.
how do you solve a problem like Mark/ria?
if you haven’t already, you must see this from BargainCountertenor:

Perhaps we should avoid encouraging these quiverfull/battlecry/promisekeeper/reconstructionist lunatics. If they think that the Sanfords of the world legitimately represent them, then let them believe it. We have enough problems dealing with militia-type domestic terrists as it is. If we go too far to alienate the fundies from those they think are their political leaders, however corrupt those leaders are, I’d be concerned that these millenarists will start blowing things up too. As far as I’m concerned, they’re a potentially dangerous fifth column, who reject even the most basic principles of “playing by the rules” within our society and under the terms of our constitution.
Historically speaking, there’s only ever been two ways for a government (any government) to deal with people like that – bring them into the political process and hope that they never attain critical mass to take over all while doing whatever is possible to try to get them to mellow and mainstream, or, alternatively, violently suppress them, Falun Gong-or Anabaptist- style. I very much prefer the former route. There really isn’t a third way that I can think of – at least not one that has any real historical precedence.
People who put their gods before reason cannot be reasoned with by definition.
I think you’ve pointed this out before, but it bears repeating, at this juncture.
And indeed the governor’s impulse was probably to escape the oppressive atmosphere that was his ostensible milieu.
This is just a continuing freak show a la Spitzer, McGreavey, Bill Richardson, etc., all inaugurated by the Clintons. It is a miracle that we have Obama.
By the Clinton’s, not much of a historian are ya?
thanks, selise–made my day!
so .. have the press besieged her apartment yet ?? her workplace ??
Because actually funny humor from right-wingers is so rare, I must tip a hat to Grover Norquist, who commented, “It does indicate that men who oppose federal spending at the local level are irresistible to women.”
The hypocrisy is just unreal. I caught a few minutes of CBS Morning Show before I left for work and Harry Whathisname was asking some mindless defender about the hypocrisy considering Sanford’s very clear comments about marital infidelity with regards to Bill Clinton.
First of all I almost aspirated my orange juice that someone in the MSM would actually ask such a point blank question.
Then to hear the Sanford defender go on and on about how we’re all human and all make mistakes without even touching the hypocrisy issue and without explaining why it was different for Clinton…
Harry was somewhat persistent but of course never got anything but the same repeated excuses.
It also occurred to me what a HUGE double-standard there is when people like Clinton get impeached, Spitzer is forced to resign, but when Republicans get caught nothing happens. Sure, they may give up a chairmanship or something, but they never seem to be removed from office.
I wish someone in the MSM would point out that disparity, since they’re so quick to point out that Democrats have been caught in sex scandals too (I don’t recall the vigorous explanations that Republicans do it too during the Spitzer thing…)
Let’s not forget GHWB had a Jennifer too.
OT – This vid is a nice separation story. I love the still of the woman at the mirror.
Don’t use the singular possessive when it comes to the ClintonS
It says to me that guys like that have to fly thousands of miles across two continents to find someone who will sleep with them.
I blame NAFTA! So, it is Clinton’s fault.
It was only a matter of time until the trade zones and erogenous zones got mixed-up.
Oh, jeez.
welll exccccuuuuuuuuse me
Grammar — Singular Possessives
Why Grammar? Christian Worldview Many of us that attended government school either never understood the importance of grammar or did not care. Some only performed the grammar exercises since it was required and/or we did not want to get “in trouble.” This is so sad because grammar is not just about the mechanics of language, but has a Christian worldview behind it. Grammar, as in all things in creation, points us to our Lord.
Load that in your bong!
the sheeple never look up. And they believe every word that every single one of their “leaders” tell them. The money quote. Who ya gonna believe, me or your lyin eyes?
Good one! I may steal that.
LOL – thx
slut
OK, I just posted this on another blog but here goes:
I wanted to puke when Chuck Todd brought up “human flaws” and then mentioned Edwards with a smug “gotcha” smile. After the Vitter story I was basically apoplectic about how he got a pass.
Then somewhere I found an answer.
Basically, believers are able to forgive other believers simply because they are believers and Jesus will forgive them and so will they. Nonbelievers cannot be forgiven because they do not believe. The idea that a Christian should be able to forgive a non christian never enters their pointy little heads because then what is the point of joining the club but for that forgiveness?
so there it is. It isn’t hypocrisy. It’s a privilege of Jesus Club membership to be forgiven. And they really really believe that.
I believe Sanford could be forgiven. but that doesn’t mean there are no consequences for his transgression. Forgiveness means letting go of the anger, NOT a pass on punishment or other consequences.
There is of course the dereliction aspect —a governor just shouldn’t walk away from his duties for a week without mentioning it properly (if quietly; who’d have a problem with that for a purely personal trip taken with a clear official calendar) to his lieutenant, etc.
But maybe Sanford’s failure to do so is also a product of the culture of fundamentalism, which make the whole thing something that could be used against him politically.
I think believers and nonbelievers can agree
Going AWOL on our dime is truly unforgivable.
Casual guess: no one south of Miami cares that much.
Certainly nothing bubbling up on the international news sites yet.
I’ve seen this mentioned again and again, and each time I say, what rot. The State government is not so foolhardy as to be dependent on a Governor’s regular appearance. It’s largely ceremonial, at any rate. What’s most important is party control. That’s why these GOP types are not resigning if they can help it.
Why publish those details? She is not the person who walked out on her governing responsibilities. He is. The rest is personal and we should leave it alone.

………………G
I think Sanford still has a chance in the 2012 presidential race.
And I’m offering him a slogan:
BELIEF YOU CAN CHANGE IN
This is why The Scarlett Letter is the Great American Nvel.
Truly wrong to reveal the woman’s name here. That is important here why?
And this statement, “Having an extramarital affair is just not the big deal in cosmopolitan Argentine society that it is in fundamentalist communities of South Carolina”.
As someone who has been in Argentina numerous times, I can categorically say this is an insult to Argentinians by suggesting it is not that big a to them; that it is somehow ok to cheat. Really? And you know this how?
or…Beliefs Change….IOKIYAR
So Maria is really a woman?!?!
Damn, I liked Randi Rhodes thinking that “if he can’t tell the difference between the Appalachian Trail and the Coastline of Buenos Aires, maybe it’s understandable that he couldn’t tell the difference between a woman and a tranny.”
i think he ought to pack his bags and fly back to argentina and live-happily- ever-after ..
you know REDFISH .. since you’re so damn critical of ths site ..and the posters and topics within .. why do you come here .. [Edited by Mod] i mean ??
We come for an intelligent exchange of ideas.
Because it’s about time that democrats who feel our hard fought majority is being threatened by the kind of political extremism I see here spoke up. That’s why.
I agree.
I’ve seen another woman named as his possible mistress, Maria Beatriz Nofal.
I would guess Mrs. Sanford sent copies of his e-mails to the newspaper since it was his personal account. The editors have been sitting on them for months. They had the name and address of Maria and yet they didn’t check it out. Very strange. If it was Mrs. Stanford, she problably expected them to follow up. Since they didn’t, she threw him out two weeks ago which forced the issue. It’s one thing to forgive a week-end in Bs.As. with an old friend. It’s another when he keeps going back and forth. Up with that, she was not going to put.
In his besmitten state, he was not going to be able to choose on his own.
I was also struck by his quoting the Sermon on the Mount in his e-mail. He seemed to think it had something to do with romantic love. I was taught that a better translation was ‘charity’ or ‘compassion’ for one’s fellow man. It was that kind of feeling that seem to be absent from his battle on refusing the stimulus. If he continues as governor, I hope someone points that out to him.
I saw that too. But it is not her place that is being staked out by the press hoping to snap a photo, according to La Nation.
Nopal is a public figure and high ranking government official. You can find interviews with her on YouTube.
pfblltt!!! political extremism ?? here ?? lol ..
imo ..that’s obdurate mendaciousness …
Why ask of your leaders what they cannot grant?
.
“Shapur”? That’s a rather famous Persian name. Was this an Iranian “honey-trap”? Has anyone seen Sanford’s passport? Maybe he was actually in Tehran, meeting with the Ayatollahs, bring them a birthday cake, a Bible and some military spare parts? Maybe HE killed that girl!!! I wanna see his passport! AND his birth certificate!
Well, either way, it’s kewl watching the entire GOP self-destruct. Carry on, boys!
What’s Haley Barbour been up to lately, by the bye?
.
The third way is ridicule. Lampoons are also political activity.
Personally, I fault Sanford and Palen for making reality far too difficult to lampoon. How do you top Sanford’s confession for comedic value?
