What is it with the Republicans and their desperate need to be heroic martyrs?

First it was Pete Hoekstra comparing Iranian twitterers to Congressional Republicans agitating for Drill Here, Drill Now.

Today, John Boehner says that "being in Congress this year is like standing in front of a machine gun."

And before that, we had Bay Buchanan actually decrying the "modern day lynching" of a staffer who physically and verbally assaulted a black woman with a karate chop and a racial epithet.

Not that this sort of thing is a new development.  Remember when Hugh Hewitt claimed that his Empire State Building studio was actually on the front line?

Or how about when Newt Gingrich talked about "lead[ing] the slave rebellion" against the Democratic "plantation"?

Or when Rick Santorum compared Democratic opposition to the nuclear option to "Adolf Hitler in 1942 [saying] ‘I’m in Paris. How dare you invade me. How dare you bomb my city? It’s mine.’ "

On one level, all this ridiculous self-aggrandizement is comical.  Haha, Pete Hoekstra thinks pushing for drilling is just like fighting for democracy, Hugh Hewitt thinks broadcasting from the Empire State Building is courageous.  What delusional fools.

But it starts to look pretty obscene when you think a little more about their choices of who to compare themselves to:

Hoekstra compares himself to Iranian reform activists when his own party constantly strives to undermine democracy with weak campaign finance laws, vote suppression, and dodgy voting machines.

Buchanan and Gingrich compare themselves to slaves and lynching victims when their party has used bigotry and hate as an electoral strategy for the last forty years.

Boehner compares himself to someone getting machine-gunned, and Hewitt compares himself to a combat soldier, when it was the war they promoted and prolonged that resulted in thousands of troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis getting blown up and shot.

"Projection" just seems so inadequate a word.  Republican victimhood is more like a 3D IMAX presentation of Through The Looking Glass.
