Late Show: Gossip "Heavy Cross"
What’s on your mind tonight?
Wow, Gossip is really great. thanks for turning me on to this, ES.

You’re welcome, jaqrat. Anything from the folks at daptone records is bound to be boogie worthy. *s*
It’s on my to be purchased list.
Hiya ndfg..)
Hi ES, how are you? Like the Gospel Queens very much!
ES ! Jacqrat ! NDFG ! Margot !
Hey Margot,
Storms rolling in right now, wonderful breezes…what Petro says!
Whoops, sorry jacqrat, Gossip isn’t part of daptone records (Naomi Shelton is)… She’s a small town Arkansas girl who just went global.
These twenty hour work days are getting old.. or maybe i am…)
Hiya Christine … we’re going to get a whole lotta rain tomorrow …
Margot petro CE!
Did y’all bring the beer?
Brugse Zot! So great — enjoy all!
{{{ PETRO!! }}} my fave guru! *g*
*waves at Margot* every time i see your paintings on facebook, i wanna go dig my paints out of storage and have fun with you!
Beer and rain, that’s a weekend!
I brought some Leffe, Stella and Alexander Keith’s Pale India Ale … anyone for Nachos and Nuggets ?
Yay breezes, may they get here soon, it’s still as a wet washcloth here.
What Petro says!~
Hi ES! I’ve got the ice cold gin and tonics over here.
What’s on my mind tonight? I’m wondering when I’ll get a call-back about an art studio that I’ll be renting. They need to clean the space out, since it’s chock full of stuff abandoned by a local college student.
*G* … how’re ya doin’ ?
I want some really good new york style pizza – lots of salami and fresh garlic, please.
Please remind me not to watch the damned food network at night…
We had the same for hours, but now the storm is moving over the lake. Will it move south?
that sounds like fun;)
Gee you both brought a buffet of cerveza.
Here… take my keys.
Our Liquor Store workers might strike on Monday, so I stocked up today … think I’ll make some Margaritas too.
Bombay Sapphire Gin — summer divine.
Garage sale!
Speaking of which.. I just purchased a giant marching drum on ebay.
Just last night, I was talking to my neighbor about Noo Yawk Pizza … we can never get it that good in Toronto.
Canada Dry? lol
Mmmmm … Hot Summer nights spent sipping Bombay Sapphire ‘n’ Mango Juice …
ROFL … not if I can help it ! *g*
Ms.CE has just discovered g&ts in Brooklyn at age 25…oh, my youth!
At age 25 ?!! How did you manage to hide it for this long ? *g*
This eccentric old Persian American barkeep on Haight Street (Persia of Zam Zam was the bar name) switched me to Boodles Gin for life.
The best martinis in the world.
Hendrick’s Gin, from Scotland. My that was awesome!
Petro – have you tried Innis & Gunn? Very tasty…
Only wine and weird European beer in her lifetime at home…gin (a summer love of ours we missed for 20 years) is new!
Fern !
No, I haven’t but I will. I’m more of a Vodka & Single Malt guy …
Jimmy Fallon is doing drinks right now…!
Well, you were discussing beer – and those folks make a very tasty oak-aged beer.
I had already stocked my cart when I walked by the Trappist Beer … didn’t want to look like an even bigger lush so I skipped picking up any. I’ll go back tomorrow … *g*
I haven’t ever noticed that in Toronto but I will look for it next time.
hahahahahaha! We too!
With whom ? Did you see when Rachel Maddow was making drinks on his show ? What a riot !
Moroccan Madness black tea going here tonight. Heavy duty stuff containing peppermint. Didn’t expect to like it, but I do.
He finished as I typed…sorry about that! I LOVE watching Rachel make drinks… and she must have them on her website. Side cars anyone? Thanks Petro!
the one armed parade drummer from Eureka Springs
I am listening to hot cubana
happy weekend
I too am mesmerized by th chorus work in What Have You Done” really pleasant
This is such an “coincidental” subject tonight. My folks and I were just talking about the old days -60’s- when Mom would make a pitcher of gimlets before dinner at dinner parties. A good gimlet is a wonderful thing.
Hey Fern, have you ever had Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale ? Some commenters spoke highly of it.
I have to say, on hot, humid summer evenings, I’ll take a tall G & T over just about anything else.
I just planted Morrocan mint in a planter today. Heady stuff!!
ES,
I would please like to know where you find all of this muzak? Me woves it. Me wants more.
Your affectionate friend,
MMM
(That would be Mary Margaret McCurnin)
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Oh, Petro,
You are totally right. G&T, totally the best. And when MrCE and I enter Canada in July, any booze border control constraints?
Hey openhope, found two new (to me) varieties of thai basil to plant. So far, so good.
Link to Obama’s stand up routine at Radio & Television Correspondents
AFAIK there’s only one … Don’t Drink & Drive ! *g*
Seriously, you can prolly carry a few bottles as presents from the U.S. … going back, you have to follow U.S. Customs Rules.
Hi mary, I just dig through the tubes like crazy… follow several hundred youtube channels and a couple hundred magazines, blogs, etc.
try to bring you the best of what’s new, or recent… though classics or bizarre slip through from time to time..)
Mary !
Hey ES. Inspired by the Gospel Queens.
If you’ve never heard an AME choir, you haven’t heard the soaring power of music.

Hiya, pups!
Just back from our monthly Mat-Su Democrats’ meeting-dinner in Wasilla. Big crowd for mid-summer. Deborah Williams, the incoming Executive Director for the Alaska Democrats, was the speaker. She’s got some modest goals:
Piece of cake, eh?
I just posted an Oxdown Diary on Max Blumenthal’s video made in Jerusalem, on the eve of Obama’s Cairo University speech, being pulled from YouTube.
Did you put up this one?
“US Royalty” – BYT Sessions – “Raincoats”
P!
If I could link music, I’d link Rod Stewart and Small Faces ” Reason To Believe”.
I would dedicate it to Barack Obama. And our Democratic Majority.
Is that harsh? I feel the melancholy tonight.
melancholy is both horrid and beautiful.
Uh - my Oxdown diary…
Artisan Q Tonic Water
Anybody tried this?
Hey ET!
I have seen them both, and the Netanyahoos ought to be frightened of Max’s work. Recommended.
evening, ES
Nice, but it’s a link to the Winans.. is that what you meant to link?
Yes, back in January. Forgot about that song… like it a lot.
listen
Glad you are covering that, ET. I think Huffpo pulled it before youtube.
Thank you. I listen to it all of the time.
The substance of Art and Deeper Thought. And humor.
Pretty much just basic human stuff.
Sometimes I envy the Finnish attitude. Most are admittedly melancholy and accepting. What puzzles them is the American ” Happy Face” thing.
“Why do you smile at strangers?”.
I personally think melancholy is not a bad thing. Pretending there’s no melancholy is where things can get rough.
Um, speaking of beer… the cool new micro-brew I was drinking turned out to be 9 % !!!!!!!!! uh,oh…..
Thanks, newtonusr!
Yeah, ES, HuffPo pulled it quickly, but YouTube kept it up until sometime yesterday. Next thing you know, Max will be in the unemployment line behind Dan Froomkin, eh?
Obama does not want to offend the rich and powerful, Where is he leading to? He taught constitutional law at U of Chicago, Glen Greenwald and a host point out his actions do not support the rule of law or a constitutional democracy. Whether he is a democrat or smart politician does not matter…I am not a party animal. And the way both parties conventions treated the protesters was fascist. Lot of people will be left out jobs lost homes and a bleak future for many that are not priveledged
The Big Pink Slip… road to liberal fame.. and nights of sound sleep.
Did you see scarecrow’s little Oxdown Krugman Froomkin diary tonight? It’s worth the quick read.
Good evening, Newtonusr… what’s shakin?
I have a feeling they both will land on their feet.
As for sleep, if you are sleeping well these days, you aren’t Liberal, or you are in a coma.
In fact i don’t see the greatness of the corporate democratic party at all. We got 32 votes this week on the supplemental maybe that is why you are all drinking…bizzaro.
Newt !
Funny you should ask… I had blocked off the evening to read the less-redacted report that CIA has delayed yet again.
I am, instead, chopping up video for a Sheldon Whitehouse piece I’m working on.
Seeing Gonzales again is the stuff of nightmares.
Petro!
How’s Canuckistan tonight?
do you feel a stranger in a strange land?
is the report all blackout?
Hi Mary – no, more like a trip to the in-laws (I don’t have in-laws) you have been dreading for months. But somebody has to do it.
Sac must be cooking today/tonight…
Fortunately, we’re AG-Free but expecting a flash flood of Rain tomorrow …
Funny. BS Detector.
Yeah, I’ll tell you when Panetta gets his head out.
Rachel has been seething about it for a week (showing the redacted pages from the original release night after night), and Marcy, well, we are all familiar with her take.
Not too bad. It was worse last night. All things are relative. And i have many cousins.
My first nights living away from the Bay Area were in Davis in ‘85.
It was an adjustment. We slept outside on the lawn.
Aaaaah-no! I love the winans, but I meant to link this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW1BO9yPilU
I made a sculpture today…as part of another piece the same materials both different shaped rectangle material was old replaned redwood planks 5.5 inched. one was 8×9 feet by 1.5 feet the first was 14 feet by 3×3 feet it has manmoth sunflower in the back and shorter decorative (smaller flowers) in the front. Behind the larger is 4×16 feet 1/2 inch plywood painted white to reflect the sunlight. The lower rectangle will have Kentucty wonders and blue lake beans. For me form follows function. Also red potatoes below the sunflowers. I am in love with life in all its forms.
When will the winds of change stir?
Nice.. they deserve a higher quality recording job.
My awakening as a creative person began in Los Osos. Bears many bears pointed me in the direction that became me.
A friend gave me some mint from her garden and I drinking mint tea. This came to pass after a very windy row in the bay…I had to rip through the waves and was thrown off of rythm a good bit…required more power than I could generate. However the pump was very real..it is rewarding to see body coming together. The Cuban music is insane a local NPR station KCBX play Latin Friday nights. Dance to the music. Vialar
Sounds like a neat idea.
I’ve decided i have to save three walnut trees in my front yard… the only way to do it is going to be forking over some cash… burying a hundred fifty feet of electric line. Probably took 30 years for them to reach the line above.. i can’t cut them down now.
Do you know of Marian Stevens?
The spatial relationship of these two rectangles is like yin and yang one a little taller and wider the other in the protected space in front and smaller proportions. The redwoods lend quiet dignity and the plants celbrate the joi de vivre. very quiet.
I can smell, feel, touch the quiet geometry.
Walnuts are a magniicent tree…do they go nuts?
Nuts is good.
You’re the girl who got a lot of dates in high school, right?
Shirt off on a sunny afternoon with a cool breze. Wonderful conditions for work. I also got some mosquito fish and goldfish food for the…I have a 50 gallon barrel with an aerator where I recycle sink and laundry water for my other planters. The mosquitos have found a home…for a while. I did this with a pld hot tub and lillie sand attracted huge dragonlies…goldfish ate the larvae.
Goodnuts?
OMG! No! I went to school with 1000 girls and no boys. I didn’t date until I met my first husband. I was sixteen. He was seventeen. We married at 19 and 20. I have been trying to make up for the lack of equilibrium ever since. Not enough fuckery.
This is a response to Newtonuser 101
There never is, Mary. There never is.
Wow, I watched the TV & Radio Correspondents Dinner speeches tonight.
Obama was edgy and funny and got Brian Williams into some trouble, and John Hodgman offended no one, had the place in stitches, and stole the evening.
if it’s on my property.. going nuts is required. /s
I feel that we are sane and the rest of the fuckers are, well ….. not.
Ariba Ariba Ariba marimbas wheedos maracas 88’s lot’s of flats, steel drums double down. bongos, timbalis, cowbells, vocals…hot and Latin insane repititions double back one two three times emphatically night soonds from south of the border patchanga baby
Hung up and out to lunch with egg on their faces. The inmates guarding the asylum.
Just for the helluvit I went over to the WaPo Ombud post wrt Froomkin to see what is shaking – the comments are in the hundreds now, and this representative comment is near the bottom… (bold is mine)
They may well keep to their promise to fire Dan, but they are getting a serious ear-full.
I won’t argue with that.
Well it’s time for me to turn into a DFH hillbilly.
Good night fabulous firedogs.
Good night, my sweet. The dog has come to tell me it is time to go beddie bye. Nite.
Great addition to a salad and good color for art work…the pods that hold the nut are a good stain.
me too
nite you guys
For your edification..I have a bail of straw outside my door ready for He Haw reruns.
Good morning. Anyone up?
Just us chickens
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Herbert today. Ms. Collins, in “A Nation of Candidates,” says it seems as if everybody under the Republican Party tent is a presidential contender. Once you’ve eliminated the ones with sex scandals, there aren’t very many left. Mr. Cohen, who is still in Tehran, writes about “A City of Whispers.” He says in the streets of Tehran, communication among protesters has taken the form of whispers. Still, President Obama must let them know he hears their voices. Mr. Herbert addresses “A Threat We Can’t Ignore.” He says we shouldn’t count out the connection between the right-wing hate-mongers and the gun crazies who believe a well-aimed bullet is the ticket to all their dreams.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes this morning. There are also pitchers of lemonade, iced tea and ice water in the fridge. I’m headed out to the garden to water and weed and fill the bird feeders before it gets too hot to breathe. It’s supposed to be over 100° today, and I don’t even want to contemplate the heat index. Have a great day.
Good morning Raven, Marion.
Marion, my birds are eating me out of house & home. Then the beekeeper tells me not to feed the birds except November-March, when the bears are hibernating. I haven’t seen any bears on my property, but I suspect they’ll show up once the beehive arrives. Besides I feed the birds so I can watch them while I’m reading outside, which I can’t do in the winter.
Morning. I’ve been following the Iran situation on Twitter. Thought I’d give everyone a heads up. Don’t click on any links. Yesterday a message said that someone famous (not going to mention the name) died. When I clicked the link, it was someone’s ridiculous website. Today there’s a warning of some links being porn.
Looks like an Iranian crackdown is right around the corner.
What have you learned?
I think we must feed every bird in Chatham County. Since January we’ve gone through approximately 1000 pounds of bird seed, mixed songbird food, sunflower seeds, safflower and peanuts. That’s not counting the seed cakes with nuts and fruit that the woodpeckers go nuts for. It’s 78° out there already, with 96% humidity. I’ll probably have to refill the bird baths a couple of times today. At least the solar pumps keep the water moving so it doesn’t boil!
Not much. The march is supposed to start in 15minutes. I’ve read no tweets about the Rev. Guard trying to stop it but they’re concerned. I follow ‘PersianKiwi’ mostly. She/he is concerned but going anyway. Then there will be a blackout.
How disgusting. I suppose there will never be a situation too grave and important for some fool to try to take advantage of it.
Anyone catch Bill Maher last night? “Dems are the new repubs”. He was spot-on.
I knocked a pheobe nest off my from porch probably a score of times before she gave up. Now she gets her revenge by perching on my porch swing every morning, crapping on my porch and screaming pheee-beee at me for several hours.
Thanks. I am not optimistic. I caught a bit of Grand Ayatollah’s speech on cspan yesterday morning. Unmoved and unwavering. Juan Cole this morning points out that the reason why the election was fixed at such a ridiculous victory for Ahmedinejad was so that the victory could not be challenged by a recount.
Oh, and I drove a bluebird nuts yesterday evening. He perched on one of my feeder stands (they eat insects on the ground and some small fruits, so he didn’t come to eat, only to look around), and I played the bluebird song from book that has the recorded songs. The bluebird flew toward where I was sitting and then back to the feeder stand, as though he were trying to find the other bird. Did it about a half a dozen times before I decided that I had teased him enough.
Heh. I’ve been waiting for a wingnut call on WJ, where the topic is Iran. Up to now the calls have been amazingly sensible but not they’ve got a live wire from VA who wants to kill Ahmedinejad.
Thanks for that link! What a cool book… I recognize some of their songs (red wing blackbirds and chickadees are hard to miss!) but others I’m not so sure about. Poor bluebird! Maybe your book sounded like just the mate s/he was after…
More power to you for being able to listen to them. I’d just snarl and throw things. I’ve got to start doing some work so I’ll have something accomplished before we go off to the pet adoption at PetSmart, looking for a sedentary senior cat who is interested in 2 laps to sit in.
Kirkuk’s heating up.
That’s the best bird book ever. Bird songs are difficult, with a few exceptions. Once I think I’ve got another one nailed, I forget it, or get confused or something else.
The trouble with knowing shit is that it’s hard to learn more. I’ve been listening to this Iran guy on WJ for 50 minutes & haven’t learned anything new. Although it’s been interesting that the callers, with the exception I pointed out above, have been generally knowledgeable and sensible.
Obama’s new reason for secrecy is to prevent administration officials from becoming fodder for late night comics.
I’m off.
Mornin’ Firedogs,
Top of the Rec List at Big Orange – diarist says he brings it at the 2:00 mark
Thanks.
