FD: I was out almost two years, 2001-2003, had a short contract in ‘03 and a short contract in ‘04. Worked four years straight after that but then my giant tech company sent my work to India.
I tell you this – I want Obama to enact legislation that taxes outsourcers so punitively, they can’t AFFORD to send jobs offshore. That’s the ONLY thing that will stem the tide.
hey mary mcc – how’s sac tonight?
Yeah I had a good chuckle that day and in fact, I made a video of HoFer Wilcox, to the music of the Canadian Wilcox. I’m old enough to remember Dave Wilcox, he was a badass. In the mold of Butkus and Singletary.
Oh sure, put up a post with my name written all over it and no warning.
I guess I’ll go find some kind of mischief to make. For about two minutes before I fall down.
Doing a clutch job in an antique Kenworth has kicked my fucking ass, I can’t hardly hold my head up from laying on a creeper and yarding around a thousand pound transmission for six hours. My neck muscles are fried and my buddies knees are too, not a one man job.
G’Thud y’all.
XO.
Whoa, best Niner LB of all time. Nice play, Newton!
lmao – g’thud busted
hey emerson – how’s that deck?
Sac is good. Was a bit hot today but is nice out now. We had our granddog here for a few days. Sara just picked him up.
He is little mini doxie named Henry. Wally and Suki love him. He and Suki play ALL day long. They are both about 18 months old. Sweet.
I remember the Kezar days.
And I was thinking about Mike today – from his first game and the presser that followed, you knew he was going to be special.
And the York’s don’t deserve to get that lucky, but there it is.
a bit hot is better than hotter than hell. sac can get miserable hot in the summer.
Half the pavers in the garage, Suz. They start laying them in tomorrow and could finish. If not-Thursday. Then a table, chairs, umbrella and a few plants and I’m in.
Tell me about it. One year it was over 110 for two weeks in a row. 115 for a few days. I actually watered the side of the house to cool it down.
wanna see pics when its done dood
i had days like that at the cabin. no a/c and 107 in the shade. *shrudder* add in i carry my own personal summer around with me and i was as miserable as my furcoat wearing cat.
It is nice being post meno.
baily, the aforesaid fur coat wearing cat
You’re on. it’ll be awhile, cuz I leave for Siskiyou Sunday, come back Sat. and then the 4th around the corner.
I’m really looking forward to a week in Canada, on Campobello Island. I’ve been told to drop the swimsuit and bring a hoodie!
hey christine e – how’s ohio?
Hey Suz,
Beautiful, green, 70’s, lush. Until July!
Koo-ooooky……………………………….
evening all.
Best O’luck to the interviewee contingent!
dare i ask what happens in july ce?
hey robt
hey sunny
bailey!
The heat can be brutal, in pockets. Mostly the lawns turn brown because we hippies don’t water grass, and we tend to herd in screened in porches to gather for gin and tonics.
does it get muggy? when i was a kid, we would go on family vacations to ky (to see family) and what i remember is how horrible the muggy is.
Good lookin cat, that Bailey! Is he bigger than Token?
bailey is 13 lbs (she looks heavier in that monorail cat post) and token is 9lbs 10 oz.
Compared to our PA and DE roots — NOT AT ALL. The rare muggy days, we freak out and sit in front of fans. Ohio is summer bliss compared to Delaware and Southeastern PA.
But I still miss the sea, the beaches, the sand and tides. Night all!
Chris
g’nite christine e
fork – shuttle a no go again
Hi…busy days on the hill. Jane is on a roll. Insanity is everywhere…ceptin my house where edibles are growing, focus is prevention. Made my calls some of the critters want to hear from their constituents only. Very nosy about personal info.
Keep havin personal best in the scull…fewer strokes for the 3 mile course.
Played today with the new Mac laptop. Not really into such things, but this is an aesthetic wow! Big time.
hey bb – a personal best :)
what kinda mac is it?
It gets really hot and muggy in this part of Ohio, but it hasn’t yet. Pretty unusual and very nice.
Nite Chris!
hey margot
what kinda mac is it?
A big mac..G)
Jane Mayer is one of the top journalist covering the torture scandal. In this eight-page article, she covers the history of the CIA’s involvement and provides many new facts and quotes, plus a lot of stuff about Panetta. She does a minimum of editorializing, preferring instead to let the facts and quotes speak for themselves: http://www.newyorker.com/repor…..fact_mayer
By the time I actually read Mayer’s article, I had already read a follow-up interview of her by Scott Horton, Hofstra law professor and writer for Harper’s Magazine: http://www.thedailybeast.com/b…..sent/full/
I had also read three excellent blog postings/comments:
The stuff that it implies about Obama and his administration are horrifying, e.g.:
Hi Suz, hey bb and everyone
hey wigwam
i dunno – its sunny’s new mac
I want a MacBook Aire, but will probably settle for a Samsung NC20.
Hey Suzanne. I’ve been reading too much while on vacation. My wife is getting pissed at me.
I’ll look for a better picture. It’s thin, weighs nothing – looks and feels like a work of art.
vacation – how cool. where? how much too much?
i’m not a mac person but this mac air seems to be a winner of praise. what is it that is so special about this laptop?
it’s cool, isn’t it. I don’t see how Mac can ever make a thinner laptop than that. My nephew works for Apple and he showed it to me. He wants me to get an Iphone and I’m thinking of it.
13.3″ LED display, .76 inches at its tallest dimension, weighs 3 pounds, machined from a solid aluminum billet.
it feels like an aluminum clipboard in your hands.
but is it durable? thin makes me think of those super small thin cellphones that broke.
thin only gets ya so far – how is the inners? is it faster than other macs?
non mac type who does not understand the mac mystic
It’s not mine but it’s a huge temptation. Never before hungered for a computer.. It just feels right.
Unfortunately, my 25 yr old bmw just went south on me. Again. And my mechanic/enabler has stopped being tactful.
drivable car? – new computer? Tough call.
I take a while to wind down, but hope to catch up in terms of vacation-spirit tomorrow.
It’s pretty tough, pretty fast.
For a 3 pound laptop, it kicks butt.
And runs Mac OS and any recent flavor of Windows.
Well, a mini-frog just hopped out of the fireplace and is entertaining Spence. WHOA-that little frog just took a very quick triple-jump right under the Chair. Spence i’s pissed.
crap
is it the only 3 lb laptop available?
rib-bit
spence your critter?
I recently discovered that most “ultraportable notebooks” sell for roughly $1500 and have a 1366×768 display. The Samsung NC20 is classed as a netbook and has a 1280×800 display and sells for $500.
Catch is that the untraportables have Core-2 duo CPUs which are faster but burn more energy, while the NC20 has a Via Nano CPU.
All of my computing is done on a server, so my notebook is only a terminal and its CPU speed is nearly irrelevant.
With a 13.3 inch display it is.
The other ultra-lights have very small displays. Like 8 inches diagonal.
yep. He’s my 4-year-old black and white cat. He’s a good lookin boy.
with my old eyes, bigger is better for screens. i have to put on my glasses when i’m texting my daughter on the cell.
Yeah, macs are pretty much consumed with the Core2Duo arch.
The Solid-state drives are very efficient, and frighteningly fast.
i’ve had birds fly inside 3 times now via the open front door. had to escort them outside before bailey could get to them. she goes into kill mode with her ears laid flat and moves real low to the floor.
I hear that.
I have the just plain MacBook – has the same size display, and I need glasses to read it. But it weighs 6 pounds, has a polycarbonate case, and isn’t nearly as resilient as the Air.
The MacBook Air with solid-state drive is the wave of the future.
an air would be a great upgrade then. i could see the allure of that.
The 256gb SSD adds $650 to the price of a MacBookPro (all Mac laptops offer an SSD option now), but 6 months ago it was $1750. So it isn’t long for Seagate and Maxtor and (gratefully) Western Digital.
Aloha Suz and fellow LLN brethren…! 8-)
Heh. But does she “telegraph” a pounce by wiggling her butt to wind-up?
I’ve seen house cats do that, but only when stalking toys.
I wasn’t there the last time my boy caught me a bird.
OK, gotta re-read that job description and get some good shut-eye.
Night all!
FunnyWheelieDiva
Couple of things – The Air does NOT have a built-in optical drive. You can buy an external unit for $100. But Apple did something very interesting – it includes a utility that can be installed on any machine with any OS on any platform – it turns THAT MACHINES optical drive into the drive for the Air over wireless.
It is astounding to see it in action.
Aloha, CTuttle
How’s by you?
FWDiva
ct dood – where ya been? how ya been?
tuttle!
g’nite funny d
Could always be better, Funny…! Gorgeous nite up top the mtn…! ;-)
Suz, Somehow I just get this computer. Haven’t been this turned on
by anything electronic since my little PS1 back in the year zed.
Fixing to move out on my new lot and start clearing and hammering…! ;-)
It seems every nite for the past month and a half that I’ve been up here ES has had the honors…! *g*
tropical? or just not freezing?
I lost the cat before this one. This tree shot up right outside his window and the birds loved it. I guess he couldn’t take it any more. Came home one night and he didn’t meet me at the door. Called him -nothing. Didn’t think about it much cuz he liked to hide. Next morning I still didn’t see him, called him- nothing. Walked out on the deck, looked up to his window, and the screen was hanging from the tree.
Put up signs and reported him to the shelter. Called me 2.5 months later and said we got your cat. He had no claws when I first got him so I said “no way.” Went to see him, thought it was a skinny version of Reno. It wasn’t him, but it turned out to be Spence(r Tracy.)
luck of the draw dood (laughing) way forking kewl about getting started on the new place – what did you decide on?
Not freezing… Still cold tho! A brisk breeze tonite has the temps at 4 degrees Celsius…!
oh noz… and awe… ya just know when an critter is meant to be.
*brrrr* is it always breezy?
Waiting on my Mom’s say-so and $$$ to decide which home package I’ll be building…! 8~)
That’s on purpose.
Apple made a short movie about how they designed and build that thing.
When I show it to people, they immediately stop bitching about a couple of hundred bucks.
Not always… A couple of weeks ago I didn’t need the snow suit… Btw… there’s still a decent sized patch of snow…!
i’m sure there will be a nite that i am sweltering this summer and longing wistfully for your snow.
That’s the truth.
You don’t get any cooling breezes off the ocean…?
i’m tucked into a cove on the bay. depending on the direction of wind, the air around me can be completely still and i can look across the cove and see trees swaying and grasses waving in the breeze..
and this is my first summer here – moved in october – so i don’t know how the summer will play out. being double irish, i’ve found it best to hope for the best but plan for the worst :)
IMHO, any device that is near the user should have no moving parts.
For the time being, spinning media is needed server-side, but the latest Scientific American has some interesting stuff about possible non-mechanical non-volatile storage, (just like Scientific American had 25 years ago).
Naturally…! ;-)
I find it ironic that the Reichwingers (ie Pence) are denigrating the Iranians for vote suppression and are bemoaning Obama’s measured response… Florida ‘00 and/or Ohio ‘04 ring any bells…? ;-)
can we say projection
and a case of do as i say, not as i do
CT good to see you.-)
Right. Molecules, baby.
The terabyte drives I use now cost well under half what I paid for them a year ago. And I’m talking about Seagate Barracuda enterprise SATA’s. They have now been eclipsed by the 1.5 terabyte drives and when we get to molecular storage, it will be just another storage revolution. Completely static, impervious to temperature, and colossally higher capacity.
Typical Repuglican hypocrisy…! I do find it extremely troubling that they did manipulate the vote counts so blatantly, and, the crowd and media suppression tactics are draconian…! 8-(
It’s got a sensual/erotic quality. The size and weight is perfect (I rely on others for wifi).
If the balking mechanic will give the car *just one* last go, I’ll probably capitulate.
Hey CT. My best-kept-secret on Maui, the Pineapple Grill, got top billing on the island this year, beating out Mama’s Fish House and Bev Gannon’s Hali’imaile General Store, both of which seem to be legends among my food-critic friends.
Howdy, Margot!
Uh-oh… time for me to suit up and head out…!
nice to catch up and catch up ct :)
Not too familiar with Maui eateries…! I’ve only visited Maui a couple of times…! ;-)
I want no moving parts on the desktop or anywhere else near the user’s person. They make noise. They make heat, i.e., consume energy. They wear out, i.e., fail. All of that shit should be centralized, redundant, and hot-swappable!
just don’t mention wanting a new laptop around the car sunny
You are lucky you waited. Apple shuffled the laptop lineup last week at the Developers Conference – all aluminum laptops are now designated MacBook Pro – all the goodies on all models, very aggressive pricing. Hundreds of dollars.
Maui has three of my top-ten, ever: Mamma’s, Hali’emaile General Store, and Pineapple Grill.
Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll have to check it out. I’m very fond of Macs, but usually can’t quite justify the price, given that most of my work is remote on big Linux and Windows servers. But a local Mac can be very handy for the stuff that Macs are good at, if the price is right.
We’re not there yet.
But I heard an interesting flash, on Sunday I think – a breakthrough on holographic proj display tech. Talk about heat… But when they get a few years under their belts with it, everything will change again.
We are truly not that far away from sitting down and unrolling our keyboards (which are 1/8 in thick) and fit in your pocket.
I wonder sometimes if we are moving too fast.
Dunno about the conventional wisdom, but seems Obama pulling Ross out is past due. Dunno why he chose to send a neocon to Iran.
nite pups
g’nite newton
excellent point *g*
time for me to head out pups. g’nite all and thanks for spending time with me tonight.
nite suz, newton and all. Thx for the hospitality.
I recently read that kids are putting stuff into their iPods/iPhones via “air writing.”
These devices have accelerometers in them, which allow them to record changes in position (with some error). But the error is sufficiently small on short time-scales to make it a feasible and useful technology.
Heh… Ya think…?
Duhhh…! ;-)
Aloha, Suz and Newt…!
