My word, the Southern G.O.P., so quick to cast the racist aspersions, is certainly living up to its own "inbred cracker" stereotype. Within a scant 24 hours, three knuckle-dragging, pea-brained idiots have been busted on the interwebs for making incredibly offensive comments about the President and his wife.
First prize definitely goes to South Carolinian GOP operative "Rusty" DePass, who used Facebook to liken Michelle Obama to an escaped gorilla. Tennessee countered with an ironically named, morally delayed legislative staffer for State Senator Diane Black (sen.diane.black@capitol.tn.gov, by the way) who "accidentally" emailed a photo collage depicting President Obama as a pair of eyes on a black background to a whole lotta people on the "wrong" list (who’s on the "right" one, I wonder). Lest it let Tennessee get the better of it, South Carolina rebounded and scored, assuring the state would be awarded the "Ground Zero for Bigoted Bubbas" prize when another GOP operative was pressed to recall if he’d blogged a racist joke about the President on Twitter.
When confronted with hard evidence of their overt racism, these soulless bigots offered very weak cups of tea in lieu of apologies.
Now that I’m done banging my forehead on my desk, I’m going to be generous and pass on some advice the Republican Party would be wise to heed, if it doesn’t want to go the way of the mastodon . . . or the Whigs:
First: There are no qualifications in apologies. Do not preface your apology with "if anyone was offended". People WERE offended, which is why you’re being forced to apologize. I understand that this concept requires a level of morality beyond your pre-conventional, Stage Two cognitive development, but given the past eight years, that appears to be a mighty big demand for Republicans in general.
Second: Stay far, far away from modern communications technology until you’ve proven to the world that (1) you understand that whatever you "say" on the intertubes is there forever, and (2) you have the emotional and intellectual capacity to comprehend why your jokes aren’t funny. Unless, of course, you enjoy giving people like me more material to poke at you with.

I hear cheese goes well with crackers.
Why these sorts are allowed access to computers is beyond me.
Has anyone called upon Michael Steele to reject and denounce these GOPs?
If not, I do.
Snerf.
Michael Steele is too busy plugging his ears and going “lalalalalala”….
IOKIYAM-FRGooper
Or so I’m told…
This is the key. It’s not working out.
I’m off to bed but thanks for the laugh to end my day.
Most excellent post, watertiger.
I want to get General Cosgrove invited to the next county Rethug Party get together.
This is not a coincidence somebody in the GOP gave the order now lets steal a page from the GOP and demand that the GOP, the GOP Media and their Moneymen say sorry.
Its amazing to me that every GOPer gets the same talking points to talk about on every channel they make the same point and all they answer questions the same way.
The MSM lets them get away with it. I think on the whole inciting racially motivated shooting angle we might have a RICO case.
I want Steele on tv explaining NOW!
It’s what’s bound to happen when you give 21st-century technology to people with 17th-century minds.
And that’s a good thing.
“They were just expressing themselves. You want to trample on their First Amendment rights?”
Dog saves owner from burning Orlando duplex
Walter Pacheco | Sentinel Staff Writer
6:59 AM EDT, June 15, 2009
A service dog smelled a fire overnight and alerted his hearing-impaired owner of the danger.
The man then saved his sleeping neighbor from the burning Orlando duplex.
Darrin Weeks, of 34 N. Primrose Drive, said his dog Roscoe jumped on the bed to wake him after a fire broke out in the building.
Weeks ran next door, awoke his neighbor and pulled him out of the fire. Reports show the neighbor, whose name was not released, ran back inside the house to remove his belongings, but eventually stayed outside.
R
Rescue crews treated Weeks’ neighbor for smoke inhalation.
Weeks was not injured in the blaze. He said he owed his life to his dog.
“I’m going to give him a steak tomorrow,” Weeks said.
The fire is under investigation
“But, but, but, they beat the crap out of Bush, every day the same old smears – dumber that a sack of hammers, warmonger, speech-impaired, white, Cheney’s sock-puppet, etc. It’s our turn now.”
totally agree…
Why is it that any event that occurs in the news….. MSM has some Repug on TV….. narry a Democrat to be seen…. I am sick and tired of seeing wall to wall Repugs…
Yeeee-Haaaaw! It’s Water Tigger!
ZOMG, it’s the attack of the swamp people. No wait, I’m insulting swamp people.
The difference is that ours were true.
Ummm. Those are 9th century minds we are talking about here. Pure Dark Ages material and definitely pre-Enlightenment.
Shhhh.
I love the “Sorry if anyone was offended by my offensive racism” move.
Thanks watertiger! Great post.
What? Beowolf?
I would say that these bigoted simpletons are slightly preferable to the racists with brains enough to keep it hidden. The are at least easier to spot.
Isn’t it just a little scary, or nutty, that they don’t know how both offenive and cruel they are? The view that makes a hero of someone like Big Offensive Rove or Rush….
I was thinking more Grendel.
It is old school Southern racist (polite version). I know because I grew up with the asshats. They don’t think that they are racists because they don’t use the N-word. Helps that they hate the poor white trash just as much (classism is also part of the septic stew).
This is true. Now to correlate this information with gun purchasing data…
It’s a close call….I may prefer hidden.
Yeah, it was the mother who was the looker.
Why these sorts are allowed access to computers is beyond me.
In order to provide material for your posts.
How many generations til they’re mostly extinct?
When you apologize for how someone else feels, you are not apologizing.
You are merely saying fuck you without saying fuck you.
While I am a long time fan of The Simpsons and the character Cletus The Slack-Jawed Yokel, he IS based on a composite of stereotypes regarding whites from the South. Just sayin’.
Spot on. I see people here in my little Southern town that I saw in South Carolina in the 1950s. I was the first of the family born outside the state since the 1750s. Slave owners, cavalry officers, the whole bit.
I think the answer to that lies more in your province than mine because God alone only knows. It is dying out slowly but surely, but I doubt it will ever completely disappear. It is far too useful a tool for our elites to divide and dominate us.
Me too with regard to people I have casual contact with. When it comes to people in power though, better that they advertise their prejudice openly so we all know where they’re coming from.
This is true. And it makes me wonder when the last time was that a Republican actually apologized for anything.
Hello Friends,

True. I try not to get over sensitive about the Dogpatch/Beverly Hillbillies/Ma & Pa Kettle stereotypes given that I come from a long line of Ozark & Appalachia hillbillies.
WOOPS wrong link … BRB
There we go. This should be better. Sorry.

Red-faced,
Heather
I can live with an undeserved hug. Hug’s a hug.
Never mind. I thought you meant thread.
Your link is now repaired in the original comment.
One of the really insidious things about stereotypes is that people who subscribe to them never have to look too far to find INDIVIDUALS who fit the description to a tee, which reinforces the perception and makes it easier for them to apply it to a larger group.
Red-faced? Join the club.
Thanks for that, Heather.
To me he looks the caricature of someone from Yorkshire.
Thanks VERY much :)
Hugs,
Heather
Careful, Last of the Summer Wine is one of my very favorite programs.
There are NEVER enough hugs :)
Hugs,
Heather
LOL Hey Friend :)
How’s your day ?
Hugs,
Heather
Great, but wishing I had the flex in my schedule to attend NRN this year.
You are kinda on fire these days.
My mother’s father was a hillbilly dirt farmer in the Missouri Ozarks farming 60 acres of post oak and flint rock with a horse team in 1968. Hunted and fished to supplement the farm. He dropped out of school in the sixth grade. Not sure he had ever read a book other than the Bible. Chewed Red Man plug tobacco.
My mother and her three siblings went to college and both my uncles got graduate degrees. Her youngest brother got a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cal Tech. Headed the team that designed the instrumentation for the Surveyor Soft Lander and retired as senior vice-president for satellite communications for Hughes Aircraft. Stereotypes are pernicious things regardless of the targets.
Me too. Unfortunately, the local PBS station no longer shows it (bastards).
Amen to that!
Hugs to you, Heather.;)
Oh how I wish you could be there too.
Next year, I hope.
Hugs,
Heather
I’m not going either this year. :(
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((Margot)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
There’s a Canadian kids’ song, by a lady named Charlotte Diamond written after she had read a study that said there are an actual number of hugs that you do have to have a day in order to survive and a certain number to thrive. I think they might have included verbal hugs, but it’s been a while, so I don’t remember. The song is called: “Four Hugs a Day” and has one of those ear worm kind of tunes, so it’s always in the back of my mind LOL
Hugs,
Heather
The 1979 season has just been released on DVD. I actually prefer the late ’80s period onward. Wish they’d get them out faster. I’m still bummed that Kathy Staff passed away last December, may she RIP.
(((((((((((((((((((((((Betsy)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Rats :( I hope it works out for next year.
Hugs,
Heather
Your family embodies one of the American ideals, that we’re not locked into social classes and with determination and a little luck people can rise above the most humble of origins.
I’ve been twice, and made it to South by Southwest this year, so I’m not complaining.
Yeah, unfortunately that is more myth than reality. Total class mobility in the US has averaged about 10% per generation since 1900. My folks were lucky (my father’s family were also poor, but urban working class) to be born at the right time. The post-WWII period was one of the highest periods of class mobility in US history.
My generation has been downwardly mobile, at least in my family.
Mine, too. A lot of that going on these days. Class mobility has declined sharply over the last 30 years and last I saw was at 2.5% per generation (that was a couple of years ago).
To be fair I referred to an American ideal, which doesn’t suggest that it has to be common or particularly realistic.
Americans who survived the Great Depression and WWII were tough as nails. There was no shortage of determination in that post war crowd and very little fear, except maybe of the Commies. By comparison there is a lot more complacency in our ranks today, combined with powerful forces who have a vested interest in keeping us ignorant consumer sheep.
On that cheery note I will call it a night. Best wishes to all.
Much less to do with grit and determination than a shifting economy creating new opportunities (electronics, aviation, petrochemicals, etc.) and government policies which actively promoted social mobility (GI Bill, FHA, and the like).
Conversely the decline in social mobility is a direct consequence of Republican policies which concentrate wealth in the rich.
Night, my friend.
Yah, there were tons of good paying manufacturing jobs in the post war period that only required a high school education (if that). We won’t be seeing anything like that again.
Rise of unions and pro-union legislation helped a huge amount. In many ways, the union movement created the huge late-20th century middle class that everyone thinks is normal. It is actually an aberration.
As with most things on the interweb, the Gen. Cosgrove story is a hoax.
http://www.snopes.com/military/reinwald.asp
The 3 examples that WT gives are not just the plain old “base” of the GOP. They are the elite of the base…2 GOP operatives and a staffer. Should know better but just can’t help themselves. If the “base” base could figure out how to Twitter who knows what might show up
I can imagine and you really don’t want to know.
Conservative Political Correctness allows for whites only to pooh-pooh and laugh off any racist comments as overreactions by hypersensitive diversity do gooders while breaking the poutrage meter whenever someone with brown skin says something mildly challenging to their white supremacist views.
It’s a win/win for them all the time.

I had better head out. Still have young minds to corrupt in the morning. Take care all.
Jane sez
Hope some early bird here will tell the morning pups – thanks.
Either way it goes, Jane has really gone above and beyond.
Giving Rahm Emanuel fits – that is great work.
I love this piece Howie dropped in earlier today, quoting Charlie Pierce from his book, Idiot America:
My most winning argument in any racial discussion was about 10 years ago in Phoenix, AZ. I had been to a concert with a friend and I treated for breakfast at one of the only all night coffee houses. I commented on the fact that there had not been one black at the concert and that he was the only Mexican. He told me that Arizona was NOT racist. I pointed out that being 6 foot 6 inches tall with 3 foot long arms might sort repress it around him.
Walked outside and there was a table of black singers that I had seen the night before at a jazz hall. I went over introduced myself, told them I appreciated how they mixed harmony in their jazz in a way I’d never heard before, explained about my friend and I’s argument
When he came out, called him over and introduced him. Then I asked them how they saw racism in Arizona. One of the bigger women said flatly, “I’m big, not as big as you, but no one in my life has had the guts to call me a n***** to my face until I checked into my motel last night. If your friend ever wants to see me sing again he’s going to have to go to some place civilized.” Then she pulled out a card and scribbled something on it. It said, “comp this guy into any show I do.” Saw her in LA a while later and she and the band allowed me to take them out to that Dennys on the corner of Sunset and Vine.
The hysterical part is that I’m an redneck racist from the hills of the Ozarks, I just like music. Kept going to the jazz clubs in Phoenix, people from the bands would come over, chat, buy me a drink, tell me that they had heard of me. Everyone in the jazz and blues community considered me a flaming liberal. I helped R L Johnson load out one night when he was a little over the line, his sideman lit a joint and handed it to me, R L acted strange, the sideman said no he’s real, my sister knows him. Music, music, music. Decide what you like and ride it.
I don’t care what your poppa told, I don’t care what your momma told you, I don’t care what the teacher told, I don’t care what the preacher told, you are not getting out of here alive. The greatest gift is the gift of enjoying life, if you fuck it you just wasted the whole point of it all.
There are no extra points at the end for not doing just exactly what you enjoy.
If you screw up, lose your car in a poker game and are stuck dead broke in a town of 50 people in Nevada, there is at least one person who will feed you and keep you moving on. Have faith in the little people, the big ones could not care if you live or die. If we don’t help each other we are screwed.
~~~ModNote: Edited to clear filters.~~~
Not only that, it’s customary (mainstream accepted practice) for the MSM to play it that way to the benefit of its right-wing overlords.
oh yeah! It all comes down to people respecting and being sensitive to other people. When you reach out to community you will give strength to your immediate community. And that will ripple outwards.
Heh, the series that wouldn’t die. It’s one of those exceptions in British television that goes well beyond its normal life cycle of 2-4 years. British television is more successful for being shortlived as a rule. This is the failure of American television apart from the lack of acting and writing talent as they never know when to quit a successful series on a high note.
Interestingly enough, there are isolated pockets in eastern Maryland and the Carolinas where people speak with a British sounding accent of the westland (rather than south or up north).
these outrageous examples are probably just the smoke. imagine what these folks are saying to each other in private or through their private e-mail. it’s not that they don’t realize the implications of modern communication tools. the brewing racism that pervades their world inevitably seeps out into public if only in drips. why should a staffer apologize when a congressman told them the joke?
We’re definitely dealing with some cheesy crackers, here.
