Several countries are going to need our advice and help as they move through their Roaring 20s developments without pushing us all into a Depression. Fortunately we’ve ‘been there, done that’ and know how to ease them through. Call it mid-wifing or mentoring or something, but it is a natural continuation of what we’ve invented.

There is also a similar pattern wrt Democracy.

I don’t think a comparison to the rise and fall of the Roman or British empires is apropos.

My position, as always, Sterling, is ‘and what the hell do we, as individuals, do now?

Mega investor Jim Rogers saw the hand writing on the wall at least four years ago when he decided to move his family to Asia and had his children learn Mandarin. Today, the Chinese have the three largest banks in the world and I have to agree with Ian that the US is a lousy poker player.
The US can still turn things around, but it will mean breaking up the old boys club at the Federal Reserve if not dumping the Fed all together. At least people like Alan Grayson and Ron Paul are moving toward greater transparency at the Fed and from the looks of it, more and more politicians from both sides are signing on to this important legislation.

Stirling, thanks for learnin’ me yet again.

For the energy exporting states in the developed world (I’m most curious about Canada, but also Norway), might one expect their economic trajectories will descend with America’s, or might they follow separate trajectories?

Anyone here speak Mandarin or Cantonese? Anyone here think the Chinese government’s demand that all computers sold in China have specific screening software put in them is ’stupid’ or ‘anti-competitive’ or some such rot? Because the Chinese will be making more and more of those demands.

Sad for the US, but that’s where the choices made have led. As I’ve often said, the US has played a great hand badly, and the Chinese a bad hand brilliantly.

And in economics, as in poker, you bet the player, not the cards.
