About Firedoglake
Good evening Suzanne….. how are you this evening?
zed?
oh well. hi suz!
boing boing reverse one and a half somersaults with three and a half twists, in the free position, no splash (’natch)
g’evening pups – how’s everyone doing tonight?
hey katy – hows az?
hey spur – nice to see ya again. whazzup?
HIya Suze. I done published the rant, with some minor editing….
hey that guy – so where’s the link dood?
Forty years ago this was the height of entertainment fer kids.
Now it is all Blast ‘em up, so real video games, it scares ya .
We used to go outside and ride bikes and play in the woods all day because mother got tired of us being underfoot. We came home when it got dark and we were hungry.
I guess when mom is working all day, they don’t even have to pick their feet up for the vacuum cleaner anymore.
I wouldn’t trade it fer anything.
hey busted
hiya Suze & Pups!
az is great…. high of 92, low humidity…. going outside is a pleasure…. the problem is my mexican fan palm next to the pool has been blooming and it is a mess……
hey ndfg – how ya been?
Added to the other post…
The cats say Howdy, against their will.
Say Hi kitty.
the white rhoddys are at the end of their bloom and are dropping those sticky thingies that love fur. the purple rhoddy is just starting to bloom.
so drop the link here so the pups can read that fine rant dood
The Rant
whoops nevermind – you used the edit feature
it was the same growing up here in a small town in az….. I suspect my Mom didn’t know where we were 80% of the time….. the town employed my 7th grade teacher to run a rec center next to the town pool, we made crafts, learned to square dance and watched cartoons. Swam every afternoon and rode our bikes all over the place…..
It was a “leave it to beaver” kind of childhood….
It is pronounced, Rhoadies honey. Like the guys in a band.
Rhodo… dendron.
hey suz
off to the toon
oh geez.. why didn’t ya tell me before busted..
hey newton – hows the bay area
The town my parents live in have a Rhododendron Festival every late spring, my parents ride the VFW float …..
Them meeses has attack’ed mee!
hi Suz
the whites are old – probably planted when the house was built. the purple is smaller, younger, but still an impressive side.
hey margot how’s ohio?
Hi Suzanne! A perfect dive, as always.
*passes around the ice cold chocolate martinis, garnished with chocolate filled bing cherries*
pretty nice here suz
your digs?
hey beard5 – got pictures of your lace?
sunny until late afternoon when it got cloudy and muggy like it was gonna rain but didn’t.
a good, albeit busy day
Pretty good, lots of flowers blooming. I sprinkled seed from daisies that had gone to seed last year and I have a shitload growing now, ready to bloom.
I missed the farmer’s market.
Oh! Thank you for reminding me. I’ll be back in a few minutes.
present
sorry, got a phone call. we managed to catch the wild rhodies a couple of weeks ago up near mendocino. gorgeous.
i missed the one here too – sleep too late and then didn’t have enough time to run up to it before the woodguy’s girls got here to help with the chores.
next week
hey sunny
Cause it was so cute.
Rhododendrons live a very long time and are slow growing, if you see one over ten feet tall you can bet yer ass it is probably sixty years old and they are forkin’ beautiful when they flower.
There are many different kinds and many different colors.
One of the joys of living in the Northwest.
mendocino is always gorgeous. i loved heading up there for a long weekend.
the blooms are at eye level and i’m on the second floor. they are tree-sized.
Sixty five, seventy yaers old at least then.
I am so tickled you moved up here and live on the coast, you are already enjoying all the wildlife and the bay.
I have three words for you,
Red Huckleberry Jam.
You might be a little too far north for Red Huckleberries.
OMG, one of the wonders of the world is a Red Huckleberry pie.
spur – when i was on the mendo coast, i loved to stay at the whale watch inn.
pricy but oh so worth it
havent seen any huckleberries but there is a boatload of blackberries out back.
i’m pretty tickled myself = never wudda thought i would have eagles for neighbors
Spectacular rhodys on the olympic penninsula – had no idea.
there was a problem with that guy’s diary – he is re-doing it and will give the new link when it is up
it was memorial day weekend, and all i could find was a so so motel in fort bragg. but mendocino was beautiful, and the tree echium were blooming all over the place–very bizarre plant.
that is so forking kewl spur – never knew what its name was. thanks
i didn’t either; had to employ various search strategies till i finally found it. then i saw some just the other day out near pacifica, but they weren’t nearly as large.
here are some in mendocino.
When I lived in Oregon I used to make blackberry jam every year, take the kids down to a park near Canby that was right on the river and next to the railroad tracks, and old abandoned brick and concrete structures. There were berries bigger than my thumb….
One year we went on vacation to Crater Lake, we stopped at a tourist place selling jam, relishes and other stuff…… My youngest….. went on and on about the jar of “wild” blackberry jam…… he was so excited….. until I told him that every year we have been making “wild” jam….
they are easy to spot once ya have seen one.
hahahaha
i like to cook it down into a sauce that i can spoon on ice cream or use in pies or turnovers.
Here you go.(Click on the thumbnails to en-biggen)
oh beard — that is exquisite. i am so drooling
Spurious, are you sure those aren’t related to triffids?
fell in love cafe beaujolais in mendocino, but many years ago.
holy moly beard – i’ve heard of triffids but never seen a pic of one. wow
that is gorgeous
My new and improved rant!
Thank you *bows* it was fun, and a good learning experience. I’m trying another one tonight, that I *think* will be faster.
the food at st orres is worth the $$$$ – early reservations are a must
left ya a comment and recommended it dood
Suzanne, I wish I’d taken pictures of the hollyhocks at my old house. They’re supposed to grow to around 4 feet tall….yah, right. My shortest one was 10 feet. I feared that it was a carnivorous-plant invasion.
wow! no, i don’t know anything about them, except that wiki calls them echium pininana.
Berries of the Oregon Coast
Mom would make jam/pies from the following:
Thimbleberry
Blackberry
Salal
Red Huckleberry
The best is that the site lists the Not Edible berries or Poisonous berries
every project i’ve ever done has taken me longer than i planned.
katymine, that sounds delicious! making me hungry
Is that Foxglove?
thats a great site – thanks katy
Beautiful work, beard5.
wow!
Well, we certainly have *that* in common (yes, one of my little “oh this will be a quick 8 hour project”s took 150 hours, when it was all done)
yeah – hard to eat with my jaw on the floor from the moment we drove up to it.
great food great service fantastic atmosphere.
well done
rec’d
been there. i find it helps to double the estimated time to do and, yet, even then i still take longer.
Also recommended.
And it brings me to a question I’ve had for a little while.
Would anyone know of a website that lists the advertisers on Beck’s and Bill-O’s shows? I’d truly rather not watch them to find out, if I can avoid it.
the one that always sounds funny to me is marion berry. around here there is a restaurant (duarte’s) that makes a really wonderful pie from ollalieberries, which I guess is a close relative.
nice site. solal is new to me.
duartes in pescadero serves up a mean ollalieberry pie – and if ya go ya have to try their cream of artichoke soup. ohmystars
that’s the place i was talking about. and the cream of artichoke soup is to die for
ya would think that someone would have that info on the web beard.
maybe its findable by searching the boycott and/or anti beck and boycot o’liely sites.
And while you are at Duarte’s, get the oyster sandwich. Counterintuitively good.
was on driveins, diners, and dives on the food network this week.
and then there is the cioppino. i always have such a hard time choosing
Evening Friends :)
Just coming by to remind everyone that this round of the NN09 Scholarship competition closes on Monday :)
Hugs,
Heather
I am guilty of never deviating from the first time I was there. Artichoke soup for the table, oyster sandwiches, and a pitcher.
hey heather – is there a link?
Hi Heather!
I expect a diary real soon on it.
*taps fingers impatiently on desk*
Oh, and Suzanne :)
I’ll be in Portland speaking at for the Veterans for Peace on Friday, July 17th. I’ll let you know the time and location as soon as it’s known :) Just in case you’re interested :)
Hugs,
For Dan,
Heather
ya gotta try that crab cioppino newton.
i am – and remind me as it gets closer. would love to go to pdx and hear you speak.
Marion berries were developed at OSU, it is a cross of the loganberry and the blackberry…. I would crawl to find a Marionberry pie….. and second would be a loganberry….. these are Willamette River berries…. they are huge in size and make THE best pies…..
Ok kids… I’m fried and going to bed….. been having some symptoms of brain swelling and back on the steroids, no loss of function and having a brain MRI Monday am. IMHO my body processed all the previous steroids and the brain swelling had not completely gone away……. that was the dizziness I was having the other day
ooh that sounds good. fortunately i’m going to an oysterfest tomorrow!
OOPS … Here’s the link to the first page of applicants :
http://democracyforamerica.com…..supporters
Hugs,
For Dan,
Heather
i usually get the steamed mussels.
oh crap katy. get some rest and i’m still sending ya warm healing positive thoughts multiple times a day
Too good spur!
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((Newt))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
But of course, my friend :)
I’m hoping someone has planned to do a front page diary tomorrow :)
Hugs,
For Dan,
Heather
feel better katy
g’nite katymine
(((((((((((((((((((((((((Katymine))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Love and Hugs, and Healing Prayers,
Heather
If you live in Oregon, it is all over the place because that is what used in highway landscaping and the parks too. It does grow wild but it is every rest stop all through the coast and mid valley. My issue is how much crap from autos are on those berries?
Hugs katy, please rest, take care and I’ll be praying for you.
it’s an all-you-can-eat situation. :~)
I sure will :) Thanks very much :)
Hugs,
For Dan,
Heather
grrrr
Yummmmmmmmm oysters and muscles :)
Licking her lips,
Heather
I’ve never tried an oyster. Mussels and clams and scallops, yum.
edit—oK now I’m hungry for zuppa di peche (fish soup Italian style, however that’s spelled)
:~D
oh dear
landlocked as you are…
Am feeling better since back on the steroids, taking 4 mg twice a day…. been cooking, cleaning and laundry without any problems……. made home made “shake and bake” chicken tonight….
I’m going…. a heating pad and a great travel book are calling….. tweaked my back yesterday just sitting down…..
all this seafood talk has me determined to i’m gonna have to find a good cheap seafood place – there is that pacific oyster place right on tillamook bay… i’m gonna have to check them out
Sleep well, Katymine. And more healing thoughts winging their way to you.
sounds divine (might have to add o-berry pie though). west coast has berries nailed.
sleep well katy
i could not go to duarte’s without at least sharing the o-berry pie
((((((katymine))))))
i’m heading off too. nite all
g’nite spur – nice to ’see’ you again
(((((((((((((((((((((Spurious))))))))))))))))))))
Have a restful sleep and an inspiring day,
Hugs,
Heather
Well folks, I’m off as well. Good night everyone.
This is pretty local. At least once a month in the summer, we make an outing or pick up a few bags and BBQ at home.
Next time will be 4th of July.
hey emerson
That’s an issue here with blackberries.
((katymine))
(((((((((((((((((((((((((Beard))))))))))))))))))))))
Have a restful sleep and an inspiring day,

Heather
g’nite beard – thanks for the eye candy and i can’t wait to see it finished
Hey Emerson :)
Iran is blowing up
And Dr. Cole is reporting…
as is, of all people, Andrew Sullivan.
fuck. it’s ohio over there
Hah! Don’t mean a thing without this-HI Su!
http://www.hogislandoysters.co…..rA7IfJM0AD
holy shit newton – my 11pm news said there were riots
always gotta stop there on the way up or the way back from mendo
Dang it Katymine, yer making me homesick.
BTW, Salal is a curse word where I come from.
It is a ground cover, underbrush kind of hedge thing and you can be walking along with it at knee high and fall ten feet into a gully plumb full of it all at once.
It is tremendously thick and I never really cared for the taste of the berries.
Kind of like a mushy Blueberry but not quite.
XO katymine.
It is Newt :( Very sad and very scary :(
Hugs,
Heather
hey busted – how goes the new to you stereo components? ya get them all figured out yet?
Yeah, Dr. Cole at Salon
It sounds like Even Juan Cole cannot get hard information. That is saying something.
Hey Busted :)
Hi Heather! Do you speak in the Bay Area as well, or is it more by regions?
LMAO!
Yer kidding, right?
They haven’t moved an inch.
If I thought the mullahs would cede to the popular will, whatever that might be, it would be more comfortable waiting them out.
But somehow I don’t see the mullahs pulling up stakes for some exile state. The kids are going to get the brunt of it, I suppose.
neiwert in a C&L post:
he also has posted his interview with anderson cooper at c&l
grrrr
Don’t growl at me, check yer Email.
Some timing. DN’s book is exactly, scarily on point.
grrrrrrrrr
how’s those kitchen cabinets?
yeah. i read it and wow…. i needed a whole lotta brain bleach while doing so
Hey Newton-the guy that will have the story is Fareed Zakaria on CNN tomorrow. Had Juan Cole on last week, among others.
Iran threw this election better than the neocons. Ahmadinejad probably got alot less than 43%, rather than 63%.
Khamenei controlled this election. He decided the winner and the margin.
I’ll speak wherever anyone will have me that will be useful :)
I’d LOVE to come down and speak in the Bay Area :) If you have a group or location in mind, let me know :) My email, which is in my profile, is
my nic @ gmail . com
Hugs,
Heather
OK, NOW ya kin growl at me……
Too sadly true. It’s always the kids that suffer.
Hugs,
Heather
A one man Supreme Court.
Ya have the Wingers at full attention now.
Yes, Fareed is mandatory watching. I agree with him only about half the time, but his guests and some unique insights to the region – very good viewing if you use your filters.
Lemme think about that. Thanks!
hehehehehe
tolja i could nag
My pleasure :) Thank YOU.
Hugs,
Heather
I’m right with you at about 50%. He’s the only thing I watch on CNN.
Another unique voice about the region is Spencer Ackerman, as here earlier today. Very interesting read, and what is between the lines is hugely important.
There is some terrific reporting, and I wonder when their sources are going to break down.
sweet dreams pups. i’m out
spencer is a great resource on getting a read on the middle east. what was it rachel called him… impeccable? or was it the go to guy?
g’nite sunny
As the Iraq occupation wore on, I was shocked to hear him continue to hold out hope of a Jeffersonian result. He did it repeatedly on TDS, but also with anyone who would listen.
I couldn’t figure out (and still can’t) if he was rabidly Pro-American or impossibly optimistic.
edit: I never did (and still do not) think him an outright liar.
Good man Newt fer spreading the word about Attackerman, that guy is on it.
I believe it was “the great national security reporter Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent“
((((((((((((((((((Sunny)))))))))))))))
Have a restful sleep and an inspiring day !
Hugs,
Heather
very high praise indeed. thanks for finding the quote newton
((Heather)) it’s good to see you!
Definitely ! The cultural context is so important.
Hugs,
Heather
Hey, you guys had it all along!
Hey Margot :) It’s GREAT to see you too :)
I’m playing hookie … should be finishing an essay, but need a bit of a break :)
Hugs,
Heather
Late check-in tonight, Suzanne. Just finished a strange French movie.
We all enjoyed meeting with you Tuesday afternoon and hearing your tales of the city. My SO zeroed in on the political stuff, as I knew she would!
My sister is now on her way to Alaska via a cruise ship. I am happy for her.
Somehow he breaks through. Almost as if he views reporting as a process, and not a sprint for the make-up check-in.
Gee, what a concept.
That “please!” of Rachel’s at the end made me laugh LOL
hey starbuck – twas an honor to meet you and yours :) glad ya got back home and your sister off on her cruise.
She has too much fun at her job!
Did you see her sit-down with Sen. Whitehouse this week? That was some serious smarts on both sides of the table.
If David Gregory were forced to watch it, he would think they were speaking a different language. And I guess they are.
Thanks, Suzanne. The honor is ours as well. :-)
I read it as optimism, probably based on trusted sources. He’s had ample opportunity to ride the pro-Am train, but doesn’t do so- at least not as ritual. He’s been straightforward on the Middle East and Israel’s ham-handedness;
I believe tomorrow he is scheduled to feature the best stories of the year, but you know he will focus on doings in Iran.
Senator Whitehouse rocks my socks :) When I was in DC in February, I ran into him while he was waiting for an elevator and when I told him about Dan and why I was there his smile grew like the Cheshire cat’s :) He is so hungry to take the torture authorizers on :)
Hey Starbuck :)
i saw that. i think senator whitehouse likes coming on her show because the intelligent questions. he sure looked like he was enjoying himself as did rachel.
they do best stories of the year in june? i thought that was limited to december as part of the lead up to new years.
That.Is.So.Good!
The other day he spoke on the Senate floor about the torture proceedings, and it was one serious speech. But I went to the C-Span archives and watched it, and just before he launched into the torture speech, he told a story. It is really, really cool.
w.o.w.
Hi all, I MISS Rachel on Air America!!! It’s hard being a Rural when all your heroes are going Tech. But my loss is the world’s gain…..!
Chacounne!
You are new to me, but then, so are so many that show up over the months.
Nice screen name.
Hmmm, I googled it and came up with lots of hits on you. I am really behind the times.
And he simply transitioned from the end right into the twenty-four minute torture speech.
I love my C-Span.
hey openhope – you can watch her online
Never heard of that one but then again they tried to teach me in a public school system back in the day.
Awesome bit of history and thanks for sharing it!
Sure. And it was totally new to me, too.
It was fun to watch him recite it.
It’s odd. But at the end of last week’s show he apologized for not having the show done that week. Said it would air (tomorrow.)
Maybe since he’s the only one doing real news on CNN, the producers are getting a start on the award season. They know Yawn King isn’t getting one for his vainglorious, “State of the Union.”
Thanks for that story, newtonusr. It is an important part of the episode, and I had to live to be over 70 to hear about it!.
Oh, I couldn’t do that to Rachel. We have dial-up. She’d look spaztic!!! And I’d be muttering profanities!
That a terrific story :) One I hadn’t heard before. Thanks VERY much :)
Hugs,
Heather
Kinda hard to imagine teh Goopers having Gaspee parties.
Ahh, I have achieved the desired state of being, unconsciousness beckons.
Good night Pups.
oh crap – i forgot about the dialup. well hells bells
i’m sorry :(
Pleased to meet you Starbuck :)
Thanks very much for your compliment :) It’s one of the names my parents gave me when I was born :) French West Indian :)
Hugs,
Heather
g’thud busted

Chacounne, that is the name of a musical form, which with it’s more detailed version, the passacaglia, has a rather hypnotic effect in it’s repeating passage underlying the work. I think Ravel’s Bolero would qualify as a Chaconne.
Is there any connection?
Ooops. Cross post!
Try this: Go here, and scroll to “Rachel Maddow (audio)” for the audio podcast right to iTunes. Small, fast download, the whole show on audio, for free.
LMAO!, not quite but thanks fer thinking of me dear.
Smooches.
WUMP!
Thank you for the story, newtonusr. This is the history I was raised on as the child of a political science/history father who read to us every night after dinner. He couldn’t abide with children’s books, despised false history and taught us the American Revolution with a lean towards Kenneth Roberts. A reknown historian. So I knew Benedict Arnold was framed at an early age. Try fitting THAT into the education mantra!!
It is related to the Chacone. The original of the song “Yellow Bird” is “Oh see the pretty Chacounne.”
Guess I’ll be checking out as well.
Eyes droopy.
G’nite all.
(((((((((((((((((((((Starbuck)))))))))))))))))
Have a restful sleep and an inspiring day !

g’nite starbuck – say hi to all for me
Heather-there’s a book TV on Cspan2you’d like right now. Aaron Glantz-”The War Comes Home.”

nice to see you all this evening.

i’ve never heard of a banana cheese muffin
Thanks very much :) I’ll be sure to look it up :)
Hugs,
Heather
I invented them :) a basic banana muffin recipe and wanted to get more calcium / protein into them, because I have osteoporosis in my spine, so I added shreded chedder :)
oooh, i’ll have to try that.
if ya like the red lobster biscuits, they are the bisquick recipe with 1C (or more) shredded cheddar.
But it’s probably time for me to get back to work on the essay … sorry … I’ll leave one on the sideboard for you and slip out the back :)
((((((((((((((((((Suzanne)))))))))))))))))))
Have a restful sleep and an inspiring day !

Heather
Thanks for the tip :) So quick and easy :)
Hugs,
Heather
g’nite heather – get some sleep
guess its about that time for me – thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight.
g’nite all.
Thank you for hosting, Suzanne.
Good night.
Sounds like a plan…………….
Sweet dreams, all.
Anyone else think the cat sounds like John C. Reilly?
wow, there is a resemblance. mr jinks voice was daws butler:
