Good morning.

Violence in Afghanistan is the highest since 01. Guess that means the U.S. is winning.

Outstanding column by Krugman today – The Big Hate.

Next to last paragraph:

What will the consequences be? Nobody knows, of course, although the analysts at Homeland Security fretted that things may turn out even worse than in the 1990s — that thanks, in part, to the election of an African-American president, “the threat posed by lone wolves and small terrorist cells is more pronounced than in past years.”

Why do we demonize wolves so?

On the positive side of the ledger, I’m enjoying the Iranian election process. I hope the disastrous Akmydinnerjacket gets booted, but even if he gets reelected the interest, participation, and mobilization has been heartening to watch.

Heh. Commenter on democracynow sez Ahmedinejad has been turned into an Iranian George Bush: even the conservatives don’t like him anymore.

Ahmedinejad has been turned into an Iranian George Bush:

he always was, in at least one sense – he was never in charge.

and I like your “Akmydinnerjacket” spelling a little better. *g*

How many Democrats would you estimate are against a public option?
I don’t know for certain, but I think at least three, and maybe more.

Anyone know who they are?

Are you teasing? Well, I for one, enjoyed the game, but not that last play where the Magic player pounded the LA center on the back as he was making the final points. I thought something like that was considered a technical foul and the player was removed. Maybe that was just college bb.

It will take quite awhile before Iran’s Supreme Council & Supreme leader fade into irrelevancy. Almost certainly not in my lifetime. But it will happen sooner if other countries leave Iran alone than if other countries (i.e., U.S.) try to interfere.

What Hilzoy said.

Especially the part where he asks whether Erickson believes that vets and military folks who supported Obama celebrate when one of their own is killed in combat.

Hilzoy can take all the pieces of Erick that he wants.

During the 06 election I was tabling with the candidate at Circus McGurkis, an annual gathering of hippies and wannabees, and some folks showed up with wolf-dogs, half and half. Got to play with them for quite a while. Candidate was not happy with my appearance afterward. Amazing animals. Would love to be around a tame wolf.

In the summer of 1989, I did a pack trip with guide in the coastal range of British Columbia. There was me, my 7 year old son, our middle-aged female guide, her stepson, our 4 horses, about 3 pack horses, a colt, and a dog. It was a real menagerie. We usually stayed in cabins at night, but one gorgeous night with a full moon, we decided to sleep outside. The damn dog howled at the full moon all night long, and inbetween, slept on my feet.

Wolf-dogs. Awesome! You are such an animal lover.

Backpacked on Isle Royale in Northern MN several years ago. Wolf scat, wolf songs but no sightings. Wolf crossed the road in front of us near Wolf Ridge Environmental Center, though, (also northern MN) as if it were a dog. Paused for several moments to look at us, and then loped into the woods. Magnificent!!

Even in northern Minnesota there aren’t too many people that own wolf dogs. I personally wouldn’t want one particularly if I had young children. The undomesticated wild wolf side is too unpredictable no matter how much it may act like the most lovable family dog.

A little ridiculous humor… Her S. Palin was on Today this am….comments about who is voice of Rs, + the Letterman story. She had a long email from anon. about how the remarks of Mr. Letterman lead to poor self esteem for girls + other “abuse” etc Highly incensed at Dave’s innuendos about image of women, etc etc. I think she has forgotten her tasteless, snark T shirt that was something about “I may be busted, but Im not flat chested” Nothing swarmy about that shirt. At least she bought it….maybe.

A wolf or wolf dog should be in the hands of the right person like you. Sadly, I know of too many people who didn’t realize that their wolf dog may need different handling than the dogs they were used to with some unfortunate consequences.
We hear brush wolves more than the large wolves. Lots of high yipping.

I don’t know that I’d take an adult I wasn’t really familiar with but a pup that needed hand nursing would be excellent.

There’s something about a chorus of wolves in the mountains.

Our two dogs do some howling once in awhile, samoyeds. They bark if there is some animal nearby, probably deer but if wolves are yipping or howling, they are completely silent. Same thing when mountain lions are screaming Maybe the dogs don’t want to let the wild ones know they are there.
