The new USA Today/Gallup about the state of the GOP is getting a lot of play today, but people seem to be burying the lede, fixating weirdly on who speaks for the GOP.
The question flummoxes most Americans, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, which is among the reasons for the party’s sagging state and uncertain direction.
A 52% majority of those surveyed couldn’t come up with a name when asked to specify "the main person" who speaks for Republicans today.
This isn’t a big deal. Who was "the main person" for the Democratic Party from 2005-2008 or from 2001-2004? The party out of the White House usually has this problem. The party out of the White House and the Senate and the House always has this problem.
Anyway, the poll’s key finding isn’t that the GOP doesn’t have a clear spokesperson, it’s that everyone hates them. The number one response to the question "what comes to mind when you think of the Republican Party," was "unfavorable." And,
In the poll, 34% had a favorable impression of the Republican Party, matching the lowest level in more than a decade. In comparison, 53% had a favorable impression of the Democratic Party.
Dissatisfaction with the GOP extends to within its own ranks. Among Republicans, 33% had an unfavorable impression of their own party. In contrast, 4% of Democrats had an unfavorable impression of their party.
34% is lower than Americans rate many countries we’re constantly told by wingnuts that we’re about to go to war with any minute, including Putin’s Russia, Chavez’s Venezuela and Communist China.
But the silver lining for the GOP is they’re still slightly more popular (34%-27%) than the Palestinian Authority.

How do they rate against genital Herpes?
It’s not as though the Rs haven’t worked hard to achieve this accomplishment.
46% of Americans admit to picking their nose
38% confide in their cats (not that that’s a bad thing:D)
34% believe in Astrology
re: Spokesperson – been bothered the last few days by the question of where in the hell is Rove – he seems to have disappeared altogether – it’s outside his M.O. to let Newt get all the media love – and not a sign or peep outta him at that marquee fundraiser the other night. yeah, I’m wishfully thinking he’s been given some bad news by ol Gold Bars
The “War on Comedians” evidently isn’t going as well as they’d hoped.
Soon, John Bush will be riding to the rescue of the Republic Party.
Breaking: Gunman w/ rifle critically wounds two at DC Holocaust Museum – suspect in custody
Problem with confiding in the tigers is that their feedback leaves much to be desired. Not a whole lot I can do with hairballs.
80% of stat’s are made up 75% of the time.
Strange that Republics are so hated. Their leader, El Rushbo, has based his entire career on blaming all problems on the Democratic Party. His show never varies.
Wonder how many O’Reilly, Gingrich and Coulter books they’ll find at this thug’s home. Suspect was wounded by return fire from guards.
only 24% believe in Atlantis
27% in Bigfoot
stop me before I cite again
at what point does FBI/DOJ sit down and have a nice long talk with Neiwert and Robinson ?!?!? hell, I’d settle for SPLC at this point
50% of what doctors know isn’t true. The problem is, they don’t know which half. (NYT Sunday special on medicine about 3-4 years ago.)
“…it’s that everyone hates them.
“The party of Hate. Their PR machine does negative and is hard to take as a steady diet. Limburgers snd Rovian screed are not a sustainable diet.
Gingrich hopes that he has a chance to blame the Democrats for the shooting before any books are discovered.
Be aware that the troll is hangin’ around.
It’s really amazing that the US does not have “A Leader of the Opposition” or really any concept of “Loyal Opposition” expected is parliamentary democracies.
Perhaps not sustainable for a national party, but quite sustainable for a small, southern party.
Seems the mods are not happy with me. Oh, well.
So what we have is POTUS trying to get people to listen to each other and to respect each other. Meanwhile Rethugs are calling dems, racists, fascists, pagans, socialists, baby killers, failed etc. etc. Wonder what appeals to the american people.
Since the Republics expected to be the “Permanent Majority”, they lost any sense of loyalty except party loyalty.
In other polling news, allowing gays and lesbians to serve in the armed forces is now more popular with Americans (69%) than Barack Obama.
Now is the time to really push Obama on DADT. Many e-mails to the WH.
I’ve been wondering how “Republicans” would poll against “Socialists.” That would be interesting to see.
OT Alleged shooter 89 yr old anti semetic white supremist.
Weren’t we told to watch out for right-wing extremists?
Yea but that was unfair. /s
That’s good news. The right wing media (the entire MSM) would have much preferred a black man, a Muslim or the coveted black muslim.
Here’s another one of the nutcases that Napolitano was warning about. The R Party was angry about her report and requested that it be edited. The D Party apologized for potentially insulting white-supremicist gun-nut kooks.
But, here we are. Thank god it wasn’t a Muslim. They’d be reporting on it (propagandizing) for weeks.
It’s a tough world for a white U.S. male. Their control of all the powerful positions is starting to erode below 90%. There’s a black prez, a Latina SCOTUS nominee, and gays are getting married. Very threatening stuff.
There will be no fear mongering by the MSM because this was a white supremist, (lone wolf, perhaps) gun nut.
If the MSM rails against white supremacy, Rush Limbaugh will be furious. Apologies will ensue.
So, is the Republic Fascist Party more or less popular than an 89-year-old white supremacist gun nut?
Never mind. Bad example.
One and the same
Within the R party, I believe they’re tied.
James Von Braun is name of perp, according to msnbc.
damn Blue Texan – just now noticed Palin isn’t mentioned or represented in any of the polling – teehee
Decorated WWII PT boat Captain, film producer and MENSA member – not your typical white supremacist.
Given this and the murder of Dr. Tiller, the ReTHUG gun fetishists and NRA can just STFU.
Give me well-regulated…militia, economy, the works.
I want government and civilization, not dystopian anarchy.
CNN has been gabbing about it for over an hour now. No mention of Der Homeland Security Chief Napolitano’s warnings about these dangerous white-supremist gun-nut cretins.
You’d think it might be relevant, but no.
Smgumby LOL Thanks I needed that!
The alleged shooter’s website from the Holy Western Empire
http://www.holywesternempire.org/bio.html
Thank gawd he wasn’t a pagan
CNN did point that out. You should have seen the rethug spokesbot try to back pedal away from Palin. It was hilarious.
The white Republican asshat said that Palin represents only a portion of the Rethug Party.
Might be the biggest portion, I think. Newt’s representing the same faction. What? They can’t share?
Who knows if any of that is true?
From here
Just more of that nonexistent right-wing domestic terrorism that doesn’t exist. Nothing to see here. Move along, please.
Or maybe CNN is afraid of Rush Limbaugh.
This is the book he wrote. You can download the first 6 chapters for free.
I thought Noot had the old, pasty, portly, white guy faction all to himself.
Please don’t politicize this tragedy. This is a sick, racist white supremacist. CNN is reporting a breaking news story – they should not be seeking political connections to anything right now.
No, thank you. I can’t afford that much brain bleach this month.
It’s what’s been reported – maybe it’s true maybe not. Time will tell.
It’s always cute when right-wing trolls try to be the voice of reason, isn’t it?
DC chief of police is a woman. Heh. As I said, it’s a tough world for white guys.
FBI is on the scene to see if there’s any connection with domestic terrorists.
Why are you a right-wing troll evil one?
He is now an artist and author and lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Neighbors with Rummy? How appropriate.
That’s right. We should only politicize Muslim shooters, right?
Here’s Juno.
This is a societal problem. It must be scrutinized from all possible angles. This is one of the types of individuals that Napolitano warned about – that the right wing denies exists – that pushed for a softening of the language in Janet’s report.
Its a politically-motivated hate crime.
If any mud gets on anyone, too bad. If this guy was a black Muslim, the choir would be singing a different tune.
On one of the earlier threads someone said that they thought the Republican party would die and the Democratic party would split. I think they might be on to something.
Can’t “politicize” what’s already inherently political.
That would be my niece.
Congratulations.
bingo
Southern Poverty Law Center on CNN reporting that Von Brunn has been on their radar for a long time and that he is a member of Nazi Hate groups.
They had the same guy on msnbc prior to cnn. Knew quite a lot about the perp.
for anyone interested in an overview on current right wing hate – here is
Sara Robinson’s lengthy 1 pager
although both stay away from ‘predictions’, Sara and Neiwert say we should be prepared for a long hot violent summer.
That faction is split. Limbaugh got a big piece. Dick Cheeney got a piece, Palin (she’s so f**king hot!) got a piece, Mitt got a piece, Huckabee got a piece. They all got a piece o’ that man boobs action.
It’s probably very good that the shooter wasn’t a Muslim. If he was, we would have a half-dozen posts on Oxdown Gazette claiming that he was innocent.
gotta link there Auntie ?
It is kind of incredible that within two hours of this event we all know of it the perps background and significant other info.
Oh, look, a bigot troll to make our day complete.
Shuster asks Potok (from Southern Poverty Law center) whether dementia might have contributed. Of course, there’s no way of knowing at the moment, but the same Q occurred to me. As I age, so do all the people around me, and now I have quite a few aged friends/relatives. Dementia can do weird things.
Breaking news, upstairs
Octogenarian White Supremacist Shoots 2 at Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C.
You shouldn’t politicize anyone. This guy has believed what he has for decades.
No. She just visited me for a couple of days and that came up in the course of conversation. She doesn’t have a website. She astute and alert politically, although we don’t always agree.
Not really, just someone who read on OG yesterday that the World Trade Center was bombed by
Guiliani and Netanyahu and company.
Speaking of politicizing, I have to wonder how Limpy will spin this to attack Obama and the Democratic Party. Of course, I don’t wonder ‘if’ he will, only ‘how’.
You met your match evil. I’m not backing down to you – why are you anti-semitic?
I can’t find your post about the Muslim who shot the soldier last week. I’m sure it’s here right?
“This is a societal problem. It must be scrutinized from all possible angles. Its a politically-motivated hate crime. If any mud gets on anyone, too bad.”
Feel like being consistent?
Oh no! Busted for hypocrisy! What a surprise!
Because Von Braun guy maintained his beliefs for a long period of time, he should not be politicized? How did this guy learn his beliefs? Are right wing and left wing politics new developments?
linked to on Oxford Gazette, entitled “It Wasn’t Muslims”
http://www.takeourworldback.com/itwasntmuslims.htm
This creep is not a Republican or Democrat. He is a white supremacist Nazi who is 82 years old. He has believed what he has for a gazillion years – he has no political connection with anyone today aside from white supremacist groups. The SPLC has known of this guy for many many years; this was no surprise.
Please conduct your arguments without calling people names, including anti-semitic. This is tiresome.
Jane has an interesting proposition, upstairs
David Neiwert Should Be On TV Talking About the Shooting
Wrong. When people here call me names I stand up for myself. If I hear something I perceive as being anti-semitic – I will say it. Tough if you don’t like it. Please go ahead and censor me or ban me. In the interim I back down to no one.
It would beneficial to distinguish between comments and commenters. You are free to disagree to your heart’s content about a particular comment; however, it is out of bounds to call another commenter a name.
May I illustrate: “why are you anti-semitic” is about the person and is not acceptable discourse here. Saying that you disagree with a particular comment and why is within bounds.
I hope you will find a way to continue participating with our community in a manner that respects the other people here.
Deprive her of oxygen, she will wither.
We all have better discussions ahead.
I do believe that is was the Evil Dr. Puma who began the name-calling.
thanks for this.
Thanks for pointing out the truth – I appreciate that.
So if I understand you – if someone make an anti-semitic comment – such as “Jews are inferior” (made up for illustrative purposes) – I am supposed to explain to the poster why it’s wrong to say that? lol Uh, no. I won’t do that. Sorry. Boot me I don’t care. I won’t be censored.
Ease up a bit. I doubt that calling EDP an anti-semite is a fair response.
Who is blaming Republicans?
