There are lot of people on TV saying irresponsible things about the shooting at the Holocaust museum (one mentioned the "Obama effect," as if this was something that Obama’s election precipitated).
If any TV bookers are looking for someone knowledgeable to speak on the subject, they should call David Neiwert. David blogs at Orcinus, he’s the managing editor of Crooks & Liars, he’s an expert on the subject and the author the new book The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right.
David actually predicted something like this in the book. You can find more on the book here on David’s book salon, which was hosted by Digby.

I don’t have the e-mail addresses but some one should e-mail KO and Rachel and make a suggestion that Neiwert be interviewed.
We know that many leftist-peace-activist groups have been infiltrated. We haven’t heard about any such activity re: white supremacy/anti-government groups. In fact, the MSM and the R Party have encouraged the formation of such groups.
Calls for secession. Calls for the formation of anti-tax anti-(big)government tea baggers. These wackos are encouraged by the media and the R Party. Anti-abortion, forced birth, forced religion groups abound. All encouraged by media and the right wing.

When Republics completely controlled the government, they never outlawed abortion. They never even tried to outlaw abortion. For some reason, the pro-lifers are ok with that from Republics and will devote all of their energies against Democrats because they might do the same.

If there is a silver lining, every time an extremist commits an act like this they hurt their own cause. The Birmingham church bombing in ‘63 did much to educate previously indifferent white Americans regarding the true nature of the segregationists. It also undoubtedly played some role in passage of the Civil Rights Act the following year.

I receive regular updates from the Southern Poverty Law Center. They have been keeping track of these wingers for years and warning us. There are more than 900 individual hate groups in this country right now. We should not be surprised if horrible things happen but we should demand that out Congress and President take this seriously.

Our government is by nature reactive. I’m certain for a time after Oklahoma City they kept fairly close tabs on the militia types. It has been over ten years though and 9/11 redirected the focus. Unfortunate that it would probably require another high casualty event to move our policy makers to take action.
Plus, doesn’t it seem like a time for our critters to be discussing gun control again?

Dave Neiwert might provide the wrong kind of information to the talking heads on cable. What they want to hear, and relay to the American people, is that this terrorist is a “lone wolf” who “acted alone” even though he had a “crazy racist website.” I have yet to hear any cable talker mention Von Brunn’s previous conviction for entering the Fed to attempt a citizen’s arrest, with guns.
The so-called liberal media doesn’t want Neiwert’s expertise, they don’t want to show the American people how these haters are knitted together, they want us to think that this is an isolated incident.

At the RNC convention, police (government thugs) arrested Amy Goodman and her crew; they infiltrated another group confining the lefty film crew to their residence and arrested others. They harrassed and beat up numerous peaceful protestors.
Where is the equal measure for people who are really dangerous like Von Brunn? There is none. These domestic terrorists are encouraged, not hindered.

Off the grid, the militia, white supremacist and the hate groups are this large web all interconnected. Idaho, Oregon…. and other states are knee deep in these groups. Had a month of jury duty in Oregon and some guy was driving without a license and breaking traffic laws. He belonged to a group called the The Posse Comitatus
This guy believed that he was not subject to the laws of the land, did not need a drivers license or follow traffic laws including extreme DUI….

My ex was loosely connected with these groups, he was buying guns at gun shows, he had 3 SKS which is a Chinese version of a AK47 with over 1000 rounds of ammo plus a reloader to load another 1000 rounds. This is why I am so glad that David keeps at these groups.
Now you know why I left Oregon (lived there 19 yrs) and moved here….. He would have to take a major effort to come after me and the kids…..

SOO funny…yet tragically truthful. Most I know get to anger before they reach the points they want to espouse…no real discuassion. But then isn’t that what extremism is about…dogma.

All they’re saying there, in my opinion, is that there was no other gunman in the scenario. He acted alone, though he’s backed (probably) by hundreds of supporters, or something.

They don’t want David on because he would make the neglect and obfuscation of the “Mainsteam” clar. Just now on CNN a so-called “expert” was comparign this incident to “radical environmentalists.”
I heard Mark Potok of SPLC interviewed earlier re hate groups. It’s a start, but nowhere near sufficient. This is a teachable moment, an opportunity to set aside the shallow screaming that passes for intelligent information on the MSM these days.
Spotlight to the media, we must demand that the truth be told instead of the usual ranters’ screeds.
Maybe Elliott’s Sunday morning contact list is a good place to start, too.
I hope I am out on a limb here, but I would be astonished if there is any amount of public pressure that could get the commercial media to put David Neiwert on the nation’s TV screens. Outside chance for Rachel, but it will not happen on the main networks or CNN. What he says is outside of the discourse that is acceptable to those that own the media — there is a lot of money being made spewing hate and no one is allowed to question making money that way, even those who would not think of doing it themselves.
Nice to know that I’m crazy. What with my being a responsible law-abiding citizen, and there being no apparent statistical global correlation between violent crime and per-capita firearm ownership, but a massive correlation between violent crime and wealth disparity, which is why I’m a progressive civil-libertarian to begin with.
