Late this afternoon, New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens) voted with the Republican Party (along with Dem Pedro Espada, Jr. of the Bronx), shifted the balance of power in the state senate, and threw out NYS Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith (D-Queens). Neither turncoat Democrat says he will change his official party affiliation.
As I am writing this, the Long Island GOP’s own Dean Skelos has already been sworn in as the new Majority Leader–which means that all new committee chairs have to be picked, and everybody is going to play musical offices (the GOP will want the bigger offices suites back), and NO lawmaking will get done in Albany for weeks, maybe months.
So, who is going to primary Monserrate? It happens that long, long, long ago, back when I was in college, I was a Dem County Committeewoman in Queens. And sometimes you talk to people.
Here’s a possible list of Democratic contenders for Monserrate’s soon to be former seat:
- NYC Council woman Helen Sears;
- District Leader Danny Dromm;
- Attorney Stanley Kalathara;
- Activist Alphonso Quiroz;
- Banker and DL21C Steering Committee member Robert Donovan;
- Former State Senator John Sabini.

I forget sometimes just how much “fun” the politicians in Albany can be.
One has to wonder just
whathow much these two Dems. sold out for? And what they were not getting from the Dems. in power.Boy, it’s a good thing this happened when there were no big crises on the state’s plate, like state budget problems, major layoffs across one of the state’s biggest private industries, crumbling sewage and wastewater treatment infrastructure, or anything else like that.
Because then things would really be a mess in Albany.
Even Californians can laugh at New York now.
From what I have read about Monserrate, a jury of his peers will likely take care of primarying him.
Was this move more strategy (to show how badly the repukes are in power) or are these Democrats the evil conservadems Rachel Maddow is always talking about? Just curious.
Jane’s upstairs with good news
And all of this is happening because of Teh Ghey.
The timing couldn’t be better, coming right after the Tony Awards.
My impression is that Monserrate–kinda like Lieberman–belongs to the party of self.
Sounds like the Republicans and Montserrate botched the coup attempt:
Oh, PW there will be lawsuits galore.
And no lawmaking.
But my colleagues on the CitiBar Election Law Committee and I will have plenty to talk about.
Full employment for the New York Legal Community!
Are you serious?!? They are homophobes, protesting pressure to vote in favor of equal marriage rights. They bailed because they weren’t being allowed to be narrow minded, bigoted assholes.
Not to mention that yesterday was the LGBT Pride Day Parade and celebration in Jackson Heights. Another good option would be Bryan Pu-Folkes.
Anyone know if there is any chance these clowns will get ejected from the party? Probably not I suppose, right-wing Democrats can pretty much get away with whatever they want these days. What the hell does being a Democrat even mean anymore?
Not to underestimate homophobia, but I think that this is more about the real estate lobby’s ongoing campaign against rent regulation.
I have no clue how this will shake out in terms of party politics, but as a matter of Election Law and the NY Dem Party cherter, yes, in theory they could be ejected from the party.
Still, it’s interesting that huge NY Republican money spigot Tom Golisano was standing by when the boys hopped the aisle. The last time State Senator Espada tried to hop the aisle there was a great deal of Republican money for entities controlled by State Senator Espada involved.
Espada was tossed out of the party the last time
yeah, but it didn’t “take”
