Outrage is one of the most moving and anger provoking documentaries about American politics I have ever seen. The documentary exposes closeted gay politicians who consistently vote in ways that harm the LGBT community. That form of hypocrisy needs to be exposed, in the same way that family value preaching evangelicals who pick up hookers need to be exposed. The American public revels in the revelations of hypocrisy, and for good reason. As Mike Rogers, our guest tonight said on the "The View":
The basis of this country is that the people who make the laws have to live under them…That’s called tyranny where the people who set the rules don’t have to follow them. That’s just unacceptable. The film shows the difference. It shows the exact cases of how people are being hypocrites.
In today’s political arena, the rules are being set by narrow-minded, short-sighted bigots who hide behind the Bible and the trope of “traditional values” as an excuse to enforce Draconian measures on those who dare to think and live differently.
Let’s look at Senator Larry Craig who was arrested and pled guilty for soliciting sex in a men’s bathroom at the Minneapolis airport Says Rogers, who readying an outing of Craig when the Senator displayed his wide stance:
In the case of Larry Craig, he voted consistently to discharge lesbian and gay members from the military. If he can do that as a veteran of the military, that’s not living under the laws you want to legislate.
Craig has a 7% record voting pro-LGBT issues. He consistently voted against civil rights legislation and HIV/AIDS funding, as well as gays in the military and same-sex marriage rights.
The taint of gayness, the whiff of lavender on even the most conservative and hard working conservative politician is enough to lose them a coveted position, like David Dreier who, despite being an upstanding conservative member of Congress with a 84% anti-gay voting record, was passed over to be House Majority Leader. Rank-and-file Republican representatives allegedly disapproved of the choice of Dreier in such a senior position largely because many conservative Republican House members believe that Dreier was too politically moderate.
But openly gay Democratic Congressman Barney Frank responded when asked if Dreier lost the position because of his moderate views:
Yes, in the sense that I marched in the moderate pride parade last summer and went to a moderate bar
So should closeted gay politicians who vote their party line against pro-LGBT legislation be outed? Of course, because as the many voices in Outrage say:
There is a right to privacy, but not hypocrisy….Before AIDS we were concerned with privacy, after AIDS that was collusion with genocide…
There are no federal laws protecting the rights of LGBT people because elected officials are afraid to stand up to the religious right. Well, as Outrage points out, if every gay person was out of the closet, what would happen? The power of the secret is gone.
And outing, voluntarily or by the media, can have a liberating, transformative effect, as seen in the story of Dan Gurley, a former field director for the Republican National Committee who oversaw virulent, hostile homophobic anti-gay campaigns during the 2004 elections. Gurley was outed by Mike Rogers; he now works for Equality North Carolina, a statewide group dedicated to securing equal rights and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
The Republican party needs to drop the religious cloak, the grotesque and cheap mockery they have made of Christianity which for them is a purely a marketing scheme to draw voters on hot button issues: LGBT rights, abortion and stem cells, issues that interfere with personal rights and in the case of stem cells, Big Pharma and an economic future for America.
The hatred fomented by the Right against LGBT people translates into legislation that harms individuals, covertly sanctions hate crimes and denies a section of the population civil rights. Closeted elected officials who vote against LGBT causes deserve to be outed as traitors to themselves and to their party, as hypocrites, as thieves who steal seats by hiding a side of themselves for expediency and their own future, not caring they throw a segment of the population–and a portion of their souls–under the bus.
Our sexuality should be the least remarkable part of ourselves. So what about who you bang as long as they are of age and consenting? Instead politicians should be concerned with legislating not a false sense of “traditional values,” but laws that support and uphold the words of the Constitution, rather than the pseudo-Judeo-Christian opaque icing conservatives have slathered over the words of our Founding Fathers.

About Firedoglake
Mike, Welcome to the Lake.
Hi Mike! A warm FDL welcome to one of my heroes!
Mike, you are the Most Feared Man on the Hill..how did you get that sobriquet?
Bravo Mike Rogers. As a gay man I applaud your work and thank you for taking this step to demonstrate who the hypocrites are. Thank you Lisa for giving us a forum to discuss this.
Hi All. I was interviewed by Jose Vargas of the Washington Post, who asked, in a headline if I was “The most feared man in DC?” The question was answered by the article…it stuck…
Thanks for the welcome!
Mike, your work has made some changes and is making more. I salute you for outting Dan Gurley and changing his life for the better. I salute you for exposing hypocrisy, an I hope there wil be a day when one’s sexuality isn’t a fatcor in whether or not someone is elected–no matter what party.
Mike in making Outrage, what were some of your concerns–if any?
Thanks. It’s interesting to note that Dan Gurley is now the Vice Chairman of Equality North Carolina when less than 5 years ago he was making horrid anti-gay material for the RNC.
Welcome Mike. Thanks for stopping by. Great presentation exposing the blatant hypocrisy of closeted politicians that vote against their own lifestyle.
Favorite line from the film was from Barney Frank (noted above). Something on the order of: “He’s ‘moderate’ just like I marched in the ‘moderate’ pride parade and go to ‘moderate’ bars.”
There were times I felt nervous. One time we were not sure if a van was following us or not. Just the thought made me nervous. That being said, in a way, the movie made me safer. Work I had been doing on my own was not being watched by a movie crew. Others with the same information naturally made me feel a bit less vulnerable.
Yeah David Dreier that moderate. Here’s a story from today about Barney in GQ on the topic. http://rawstory.com/08/news/20…..liticians/
You outed Gurley, you found him him on Gay.com and confronting him. Did he give you any reasonable explanation for why he worked for such a bunch of lying gay-hating, scummy bastards like GWB and Cheney? And did he have any explanation for the hideous material he ws creating and distributing?
Gurley is another example of how it works. My work is ALL ABOUT the likes of Gurley who know better and need to be shown the way.
He was unable to explain himself, just saying “do what you have to do.” In the film, Gurley says what I do is “fundamentally dishonest.” Hmmmm, Not sure how that can be so…but I’ll leave it up to the film’s viewers to decide who was being honest.
Thanks for the link :)
was Gurley self-loathing? Or simply opportunistic? was he actually a Republican?
Interestingly, at first he denied he had anything to do with the fliers. Later in the game — and in the film — he does acknowledge his role in the creating and mailing of them.
Welcome, Mike! It’s such a wonderful movie.
I got to see it with Mike & Hilary Rosen. I cried. It was very moving. Cannot recommend it enough, but it gives the context to Mike’s activism that many don’t see.
Such a great film.
I do think he was a GOP, not a social issues guy, but a guy caught up in the movement because of his beliefs about fiscal issues (I know…don’t get me started LOL). I think in time he will be a consistent supporter of our side and that means bailing on most in the GOP.
Thanks, Jane. I really appreciate it!
What you do is VERY honest. You force others to BE honest. If sexuality wasn;t an GOP talking point, a major focus for polticians, there wouldnt be a need to to out hypocrites because they wouldnt have ot be closeted. the could just be gay Republicans–fiscal conservatives who are gay. BFD, as opposeed to antiLGBT voting jerkis
You’re welcome, I’ve been following your work for a while now, and I have seen some of the interviews for this film. It’s interesting to see how squeamish some people get about you outing people for being hypocrites. They seem to ignore the part of being hypocritical and just focus on the outing part. And yet you don’t out people who aren’t hypocrites.
Yes. Exactly. There are a number of closeted gay Congressman I have talked to personally whom I have felt there was not reason to report on. In those cases, I never write about it. In two cases, I have been an important support system for the Congressmen.
and I apologize for my typos tonight, worse than nomal
Hey Mike
Glad to have you at the Lake. I’m not a movie person–I’m picky–but I found this very good, a very tight narrative.
And effective–my first thought when I heard about the events in NY today (where a Dem flipped to prevent a gay marriage bill from being voted on–and to keep his own crimes hidden) was about the movie.
Have you been following the events in NY yet?
I find the people who are squeamish to freaked about gay sex. They have no problems firing up impeachment hearings over sperm on a blue dress. But a man kissing a man, WOOOOOOOOOOAH!
Hi! I can’t wait to see Outrage. It looks great and I hope it gets to Tokyo soon. Just to confirm, my understanding of the ground rules for outing someone requires that they 1) be a public figure and 2) be on public record with anti-gay statements/actions/legislation. Is my understanding correct?
I think Outrage makes an importan connectin betwen anti-gay politics and hate crimes. And stresses the VERY important point that there is no federal hate crime legislation protecting LGBT people.
Hi Marcy!
The events in NY are not what I expected, but I can’t say I’m terribly surprised. Their Senate is a mess! And the way gays have been treated in the wake of prop 8 and the Supreme Court treatment today…well is anyone surprised?
My first political job was with Linda Winikow a Democratic State Senator who went to jail for corruption.
I thought the film handled this point so very well. I hope a lot of people get a chance to see it. especially those who have a difficult time understanding hypocrisy.
Absolutely! 100%
As I say, I don’t out people… I report on Hypocrisy.
Who was the first public figure you outed, Mike?
And you were working on Larry Craig when he displayed his wide stance–how did you feel about that (BTW, I ROLFed when in his press conference, shown in Outrage, Craig says “I’d like to thank you all for coming out today.”)
Thanks! The film, i have been told, makes it very clear why this needs to be done… I am a bit biased I admit.
Welcome Mike! I’m always amazed at how the gays in our country vote against their own benefit. I have one gay couple in my life who are very republican and they get angry when the same sex marriage topic is brought up. I always say, “What the hell! Can’t you at least support the idea of it for other gay couples who would like to get married to the person they love?” and they still can’t grasp it. It’s like there this underlining fear in them they get directly from other republicans or something. Very strange. At least you’re cutting through all this nonsense.
the first outing was actually a Democratic Chief of Staff for a horrid blue dog. That was 5 months before the site started.
the first outings on the site were in July of 2004 with Jay Timmons Director of the NRSC. http://www.blogactive.com/2004…..ntoll.html
They LIKE gay marriages… as long as the gays married are in the closet.. See: Larry Craig, Ed Schrock, etc.
It’s my HERO, Mike Rogers!
So if Charlie Crist is the GOP Senate nominee in Florida, will those talkative lads from his past continue to find lucrative employment out of state? What happens if Charlie wins the Senate and becomes a 2012 Presidential prospect for the GOP? Will the lads have to be shipped to Mars?
Next question: has that fellow from NewsChannel 8 called you for a date yet?
I want to go back to the film.
I thought the most amazing part of it was when McGreevy and Kolbe talked about how liberating coming out of the closet was. The movie explains why outing is necessary–but that was an important point to bring closure to the movie, I thought.
So Mike, what were som of the difficulties of making Outrage? How cooperative were some of your subjects? And what were the ibe like during the making of the movie?
TEDDY!!!!!!
Charlie will not make it to the White House. The level of scrutiny is so high, I can’t believe he would get away with it. He may win the Senate seat, but I almost want Rubino to win the nomination. That way the wingnuts will need to defend him.
Yes. The problem I have with McGreevey is that he is now a hero. Jim McGreevey came out because he was corrupt, not because he was gay. In fact, he proves a point. Today pols would rather hide corruption by saying “I’m gay.” Fifty years ago, a pol would say “I’m corrupt” to hide the fact that he was gay.
I agree Marcy, the idea that if every closeted politician came out–what then? would it suddenly cause a weird third party of uptight religious conservatives, a Republican party that returned to the Lincoln roots (?!) and the Dems?
If every gay pol came out, we’d need more gay bars in DC.
Is Follies still around? The bar where larry Craig used to cruise?
The follies is now a $800 million stadium.. From one Folly to Another
As a resident of NJ I can say in all probability if McGreedy came out and wasn’t so corrupt, it wouldn’t have been a problem here.
Mike, I did like it when you corrected the Outraged Channel 8 guy: ”Charlie Crist doesn’t HAVE any children.”
Mike, Do you think there might be a day in the near future when Senator Graham could be outraged?
Exactly. My family lives in NJ. I had heard he was gay. Gay was not the problem… Appointed his unqualified lover to an important post.
That weird third party of uptight religious conservatives could then hold their national convention in a high school gym – sounds good to me.
Yeah Charlie Crist has no kids! And Larry Craig’s are adopted, a small detail they leave out a lot. I do think it’s interesting that McKelway, the anchor in VA who wanted to punch me in the face, said that my work can hurt the kids of these closet cases. Interesting that he, father of 4, framed it as: Closet cases have kids.Hmmmmmmm.
Graham is an odd case. I have some information from the case… I will continue to research him.
How many interviews did you do and how many got cut from the movie for time?
Help spread the word about Outrage — vote for it at reddit!
One important point about Mike’s work is that he has a 100% accuracy record. I don’t think the New York Times or the Washington Post can make that claim. But it’s probably why we won’t ever see Mike speculate in a forum like this one about who might be next, or when Graham might get crackered.
Something I don’t understand, though, is — how tightly closed is the closet door? Do the McCains ever try to set Lindsay up with a nice young lady? Does David Dreier still have lots of ‘beard’ dates? Or is it simply “not talked about” like so much else in DeeCee?
Mike, there were some very brave guys in Outrage who spoke on camera on the record, were they worried at all? the story about Koch’s lover was very scary as were the implication about Crist’s
And what were things like on set? Was there any tension?
We did a ton of interviews I was amazed that it took dozens and dozens of filming hours to create a 90 minute movie. I know there were a number of subjects who were interviewed and didn’t get into the film :-( Some my good friends.
I did not interview those folks, Kirby did. In every case, I applaud those who come forward to expose the truth behind the lies.
People on a project like this work together for many hours and in some cases on trips where people can get cranky (OK, I can get cranky) and it tests those relationships. I can’t imagine a film like this not having tension from time to time. The end result speaks to the fact that we dealt with it well.
In many cases those that come forward to reporters will not come out publicly, not because they don’t want to, but because they know the right wing will tear them limb from limb.
Channel 8’s Doug McElway tells Mike Rogers he wants to go outside and punch him in the face: youtube
Mike Rogers and Kirby Dick on The View: youtube
Looking at the new political candidates in the future, and with younger demographics, will we finally have openly gay politicians – or will the political machine keep them closeted?
And right wing s so virulently anti-gay because they pander ot the religious side of the GOP…?
I hear you. And that bit didn’t get hit at all in the movie (and got soft-pedaled with Dreier). But from a story perspective, it’s critical, I think.
Oh, do tell.
As time goes on, they will new issues to split the country on. Meghan McCain and Steve Schmidt (ugh and ugh-er) are now in favor in marriage equality. Those in the machine will stay in the closet in their quest for power.
LOL … I’m most interested in hearing about Graham too !
Thanks Mike for this, you too Lisa.
Barney puts it best: People hate gay people because their leaders tell them to. Leaders hate gay people because they need false issues to divide the electorate. They need the religious base for that… Is it any wonder Ted Haggard and others are created from that?
Do you think there will ever be a time that you “go outta business,” so to speak, Mike? Will there always be closeted politicians? At some point, this younger generation for whom sexual orientation is simply no big deal won’t understand what all the secrecy and sneaking around have been about.
Or will there always be a party where self-hating closeted gays will find a home?
Definitely. I think McGreevey gets WAY too much credit. I mean can anyone tell me what he has actually done other than build a career out of it? Once he taught a class on ethics at a college in NJ…seriously!
How much of the fighting against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, in the military is from the closeted gays?
Well, how reliable would I be if I let the info out in the small drip. Trust me, when I am ready to report, I will. Interestingly, Graham is a member of the Army JAG, something he would be tossed from if it became known that he was gay.
The Military, in any normal case, would be investigating him, as they start Don’t Ask Don’t Tell investigations with a lot less!
Teddy as long as there are people willing to toss others under the bus for power, we will see some degree of this. The more that it’s reported on, the less likely I feel a young person may continue the charade.
The information wouldn’t involve a pink hello kitty darth vader costume would it?
DADT: Well, larry Craig wrote a letter defending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Ed Schrock made it a center point of his campaign — actually said the DADT was TOOOOO WEAK!!!!! He then tried to get laid on a phone line with other men. Here are the recordings. http://www.blogactive.com/2009…..l-ers.html
Teddy, you are too young to listen.
HOW did you find my undercover research outfit?
It baffles me that so many Republicans–closeted or not–would vote against HIV/AIDS funding…like WTF.
Also, just heard Rachel Maddow went hard on Obama re DADT..
Mike – when will you start the next project and have it highlight outing all the closeted gay preachers that pound their pulpits on Sunday?
Mike, what was your reaction to hearing Larry Craigh had been arrested for a “wide stance”?
David Catania, a DC city councilman, said that instead of standing next to their husbands, they should be off to an STD clinic.
I do think that bathroom sex guys liek Craig actually forget it once they do it. They are not “gay” they are “men who have sex with men”
Re: DADT, Rachel Maddow just called Obama “President Fierce Advocate” and asked what kind of stalling on LGBT issues we would have seen thus far if he wasn’t such “a fierce advocate for equal rights for gays and lesbians” as he said he was on 12/18.
Mike, do you know who in DeeCee speaks to the President about our issues? I am really worried that an advisor whose name rhymes with Bomb De-Manual is telling him to go slooooooow. Perhaps from his experience in the previous Democratic President’s White House?
Especially on DADT, the repeal of which is more popular than the President himself with Americans, this seems absurd
There are folks who have reported on these right wing religious freakozoids. I tend to focus on politicians. Jasmynne Cannick and Keith Boykin reported on this extensively about 4 years ago.
When Larry was arrested I got tons of calls saying they had thought I was way off the mark and must be wrong. I stood by the story and was vindicated. It felt AWESOME… and help them make a motion picture doc featuring my work… THANKS Larry!
Like Roy Coh as played Pacino, a great scene used in the movie. Mike.. do you think outting evangelical preachers can help cut off the theocrats at the knees? What do you think the fall out form Haggard was?
And we’re supposed to get excited about Hate Crimes. What a fucking joke!
Hate crimes are bullshit: http://www.blogactive.com/2009…..rsion.html
Oh, please push this image… http://www.blogactive.com/ocfin.gif
I think outing Haggard was a HUGE influence on politics. I am a Jew-athiest so I’m not really all that schooled in the issues, but I’ll be happy to look at info that comes my way.
I understand that the political side keeps you busy enough…I think the need is here now to expose the pious religious extremists again, especially with the growing environment finally coming out about the theocratic GOP and our poster gal Palin. One of her favorite pastors in Anchorage smacks of denial, and had his own son “de-gayed” and is not fighting a very ugly anti-gay initiative in Alaska…
I wish I had the time (and money) to expand the work, unfortunately the going rate for Outers on the jobmarket is $0/year. I’m focused on my other work and will continue to report on BlogActive and PageOneQ.
In HIV/AIDS prevention early in this century, we started using “MSM” (men who have sex with men) to describe these guys and to reach this demographic with appropriate messaging. Anything that seems oriented to “the gay” they ignore, because they don’t see themselves as gay. And they studiously avoid any expression of interest in anything aimed at “the gay.” Messages directed to gay men miss them completely; they tune them out, sometimes intentionally, sometimes unwittingly.
In fact, a HIV prevention colleague of mine found a subset of this population, hooking up in Ocean Beach mens rooms on Great Highway on their way home to the wife and children on the peninsula, really resistant to HIV messages: “I’m not gay, I only hook up with other married guys, we’re all safe from disease.”
Of course, non-straight guys who wanted to hook up with these married hotties invested in gold bands to wear on their ring finger.
Teddy you are so right. At Harvey Milk School in the late 90’s we had to address both gay identified and non-gay identified teens who were having sex with the same gender.
When I think of how many lives were lost by government inaction (read: denial) it breaks my heart.
What really pissed me off is this… When I worked at Harvey Milk Peggy Noonan visited and tried to defend the refusal to release the Sullivan Report. AT THE HARVEY MILK SCHOOL this woman tried to defend a report’s release because it called attention to the high numbers of gay teen suicides. Un. Fucking. Real.
Can you describe your “process,” Mike? I mean, if somebody comes to you and sez, hypothetically, “Mitch McConnell is gay and I know it for sure,” how do you handle that? What steps do you take to verify the information and to avoid getting tripped up yourself?
Arrrrgh, we are almost out of time…Mike, thank you sooo much for taking time form your busy life to discuss these impirtant issues wiht us. And THANK YOU for all that you do to make politics cleaner and more transparent. Your work is so vital and beautiful.
I know we are getting close to the end… I wanted to share three quick things.
1. The site and trailer are here: http://outragethemovie.com/
2. The theaters are here: http://www.magpictures.com/dat…..b49ba422d1
3. Please ask you local indie theaters to show the film. Let’s help spread the word.
Keep the tips coming!
Yes, Mike, please do…how do you manage to do what you do so gracefully and accurately?
we can squeeze some more time…
Like any reporter, I have to review the sources, meet with them, and determine via research. In some cases the proof is there (Schrock tapes) in other cases, i had to travel extensively. I went to Idaho and other places to meet with men who alleged they had sex with men.
I cannot be 99% accurate. I must be 101% accurate. So far, I’ve done a better job than Judith Miller, right?
I have a few more
let’s chat for 15
Peggy Noonan has been a really damaging part of our public discourse for decades.
Thnak you Mike!
Teddy, when three men, who do not know each other start telling you about Larry Craig’s penis… you have to say… Hmmmm, this stuff is true.
ONE time she was honest when she talked about what people on the right really thought about Palin. She thought she was off mic.
SO Mike, what with regards to local closeted politicians who are anti LGBT, how would someone go about dealing wiht them–let you know with info and sources?
And that teevee moment got Chuck Todd promoted to White House Correspondent!
Absolutely. In fact we’ve moved some real change with local officials. A Democrat was outed for holding up a marriage bill (one of the very few lesbians I’ve seen in this case). A few days later the bill moved and was passed by the chamber.
Okay, Sheppard Smith..he seems at times to be cracking, like his melt down a few weeks ago on Fox…
A number of people have asked why I outed Smith. I did not. Not every case in the movie was mine and he was not.
It’s important to remember that Smith makes $7 – $8 million a YEAR being the face of a hateful opinion network that masquerades as a journalism outfit. That needs to be called out.
If you want some interesting historical stuff… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outing
Sounds like a new focus on hypocrites.
I remember during the early years of ACT UP and all the outing. I was for it then too. Silience=dDeath, and as one activist stated in Outrage
I am not focused on media, but I do think it’s important and if you have any tips on Doug McKelway send ‘em ASAP.
This was a really fun time!
Thanks for having me.
Mike Signorile did a lot of that. He is in the film and is fabulous.
Thanks for stopping by and spending the evening.
Thank you Mike, and everyone! Mike keep up the good work!
“I’m gonna take you outside and punch you across the face~!”
How did that feel, Mike, right in the moment, to have a teevee anchor say that to you?
Thanks, Mike, keep up the good work~!
I really enjoyed this thread. I admire courageous people and look forward to seeing the movie.
Rick Santorum?
