According to sources on the Hill, the Lieberman-Graham detainee photo suppression amendment is out of the conference report of the supplemental.
For everyone who made phone calls — pat yourself on the back.
Let us all now sit back and enjoy the spectacle of Joe Lieberman throwing a tantrum.
If you decided you wanted to celebrate by donating to the Marcy Wheeler fund, — well, I could think of worse things.

The progressives do good work – especially here. Thanks, Jane
Jane, where did you find that cute picture?
My birthday party!
(kidding)
The Center Dems caved?
congratulations, Jane!
Let us all now sit back and enjoy the spectacle of Joe Lieberman throwing a tantrum.
ahhhh….
I’ll be back in a little while.
Wow! Great news, and fantastic work everyone who helped get it dropped!
Lieberman was conspicuously absent from last Monday’s Jefferson Jackson Bailey dinner here in Connecticut, but I gather that our party’s chairperson didn’t extend him an invitation.
Gee, if that’s true, I’ll feel slightly guilty about all those shots I took at her over the years.
So any idea when we will get the photos released publicly? I bet Condi and Gonzo swear they had nothing to do with it and that Bush knew nothing (the Reagan Defense).
But somehow Condi and Gonzo won’t be blaming the troops instead they will blame rogue actors for the torture. The MSM will be blaming us for blaming the troops.
Blackwater, the CIA I bet they don’t get mentioned.
Fantastic news!
All RIGHT!!! WOOHOO!!!
If I were a betting woman, I’d say Rahm decided to consolidate progressive sell-outs while he can, before he starts hemorrhaging Blue Dogs.
Nice move, Rahm.
But possibly too late….
No one could have predicted that Lieberman would be such a pimple on the ass of democracy (except FDL).
The best thing for the D party was to jettison Lieberman in 2006, but no. The Beltway Dem incumbency racket including Hills and Obama had to support the “Connecticut For Lieberman Party” instead of the winner of its own Democratic Primary.
Dear Congress,
Was that SO hard? /s
Is this YOUR fault, Jane. Because if it is: a great big Huzzah!
Wow Jane! That is The Awesome!
Love the picture with this post. Couple of bumbling pro-torture idiots!
Say, that’s good dip.
I bet the Bushies, Congress and the MSM hacks are the only people on the planet who think that regular troops did most of the torture and not Blackwater and the CIA.
I expect any attempt to investigate the photos will be labeled as prosecuting the troops.
Yes I’m sure some were hurt by the troops. But for the big guys at Blackwater and the CIA getting some big piece of information by being the first to break a terrorist means a promotion, cash etc. These guys do not share credit.
They gave the orders, they ran the interrogations, the ordered the troops to help them and they got their orders and assurances they would not go to jail for war crimes from?
Things are that bad for Rahm and the Blue Dogs? I’ve been kind of out of the loop the last few weeks.
Considering how much of a non sequitor the L-G amendment was in a *spending supplemental, and how outright, obviously and predictably offensive it proved to be to progressives: What if this was just a red herring to get us to spend our time and energy organizing around the photo amendment — and to get us to compromise and accept the IMF bailout?
Thoughts on this?
Hooray! Great work Jane.
Can we imagine little Lindsey stamping his foot, too?
Thems a coupla dips, aaiiight.
Good work, Jane!!
mad props to you Jane for getting us involved – mwaaah !
Hackworth – believe that pic was taken at last year’s Tire Swing/Rib Fest @ McCain’s “ranch”
Rather than risk his Blue Dogs losing a very public vote and possibly having to explain that vote in a Dem Primary and a general election when these photos might be all over the news because Congress or the World Court is finally investigating what happened.
Rahm removed the item from a vote. I wonder what the GOP reaction will be? Will they fight for the Bush Legacy and tie themselves to covering up war crimes?
Or will they stay quiet and eventually go along with an investigation?
You maybe right but is the IMF that important to horse trade on?
anybody got a smoke?
Coupla threads back, IMF is backdoor European bank bailout.
Blue Dogs may be under attack from their beloved right flank.
Ranch? He raises cattle, horses, sheep? Or does he own a ranch and has people raise the cattle, horses, sheep whatever?
Or is ranch a new word for McMansion and a lot of land but it does not indicate raising animals?
LOL Exactly. ;-)
Hmmm? Support foreign banks and you please the corporate wing of the GOP the Blue Dog wing.
But you lose the increasingly angry teabaggers as well as us? You risk throwing us together against the corporations.
The Teabaggers are not blaming immigrants as much as they are blaming big corporations for the economy?
If the GOP/ Blue Dogs can’t get the blame for the economy shifted to anyone else but the big corporations…
This is not going to be popular with us or the teabaggers? They need this to go away quietly just who is doing the WH planning on legislation?
there’s probably a clever quip to be made using the word ‘milkshake’ but I’m afraid my urban slang chops aren’t up to the task.
For some reason I’m envisioning Joe Lieberman crying in a corner somewhere. I wonder if Joe Lieberman is in agreement with these young American Jews when they were drunk in Israel recently…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..r_embedded
Oh probably.
Right the fuck on. Fuck Lieberman (who WILL be defeated in 2012), fuck Graham who’s nothing but a repuke and fuck Rahm Emanuel who’s a DINO.
well *that* was disturbing….
Seconded.
We’re having a sale in Connecticut to help defray our budget shortfall.
Two Senators for the price of one. The bidding starts at a dollar.
But wait… there’s more…..
Buy now and we’ll throw in our useless Republican Governor (whose other idea to balance the budget is to legalize Keno, after promising the unions that none of their State jobs would be in any way impacted by budget reduction efforts).
Call 1-800-uselessa and buy the complete set before some other poor fool gets them.
See, that is what I am having a hard time comprehending. Rahmbo is basically selling out his beloved Blue Dogs. I wonder why.
Jane, just thought I’d pass this on (via Politico):
(My Bold)
It seems that Pelosi and company will drop Lieberman-Graham, but only if a federal court does the dirty work and provides cover.
I know. The first time I watched it I had to scrape my tongue with the garden rake because of all the swear words that came out of my mouth. ;-)
Nice Work! But don’t get too comfortable. When AIPAC appears to blink, it’s usually just a head fake, and they’ll come right back through another door. You do know that Rahm, Lieberman and Graham are AIPAC, right?
I should note that I find the “aide’s” comment strange, or even bizarre. How does he/she purport to tie legislative removal of Lieberman-Graham on some future possible federal court ruling?
The only thing that jumps to mind is the possibility that Pelosi and Company have received a “heads-up” on such a future federal court ruling.
These are government photos ordered by the courts to be viewed by the voting public.
Who hates democracy so much they want to hide the truth?
That’s what I wondered, too. And does this hold up the entire bill – IMF, supplement? I suppose it would but it’s getting vague now.
The fix is in.
I should also note that I find the idea that Pelosi and Company have received a “heads-up” on such a future federal court ruling also strange or bizarre.
Judge Hellerstein and the 2nd Circuit have repeatedly ruled against the government on releasing the photos, and the Obama Administration even admitted that they had no case, so I fail to see where such a federal writ would come from.
Scotus? Perhaps, but given all the previous rulings against the government, that too seems unlikely.
Does thie mean the effort to get this passed is dead, or only that it won’t be passed as part of the Supplemental?
How sad to see “progressives” throw Barack Obama under the bus on this photo issue.
“The release of the photos will serve as propaganda and recruiting tool for terrorists who seek to attack American citizens at home and abroad. We should strive to have as open a government as possible, but the behavior depicted in the photos has been prohibited and is being investigated. The photos do not depict anything that is not already known. Transparency, and in this case needless transparency, should not be paid for with the lives of American citizens, let alone the lives of our men and women in uniform fighting on our behalf in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
“Let it clearly be understood that without this legislation the photos in question are likely to be released. Such a release would be tantamount to a death sentence to some who are serving our nation in the most dangerous and difficult spots like Iraq and Afghanistan”.
– Barack Obama
According to a CNN poll, 60% of Democrats and 6 out of 10 people who describe themselves as liberals do not think the photos should be released. I believe that many of the comments expressed here on this issue are for the most part just representative of a very small, fringe minority.
Perhaps this has something to do with it (via AP, so caveat emptor!!!):
According to recent history, that CNN poll is not to be believed or trusted. What AIPAC wants, AIPAC gets. The media serves their purposes. Follow the money.
Tell me about these worse things, Jane.
Well done FDL community. America owes you a great deal.
How utterly narcissistic and foolish to think a blog made any difference in Congress on this issue. Oh I do so love the irrationality. LOL Wonderful stuff!
Judge Hellerstien will very likely rule for the government.
He is known as kind of a “fixer”. He disposed of a lot of problematic litigation related to 9/11 lawsuits by victims families.
Nice to see you, Karl. How’s the new Fox gig working out?
Hmmm…he has consistenly ruled against the government on the torture photos, the destroyed CIA torture videotapes, etc.
The 2nd Circuit has consistenly ruled against the government on the release of the torture photos.
I guess I’ll have to bet against your prediction. *g*
Hope you’re right.
That’s right – demonize and insult true progressives and liberals that don’t agree with extremist fringe positions.
Joe! Haven’t seen you since Connecticut.
How’s Hadassah and the kids?
That’s a shame Jane that an intelligent progressive like you chooses to engage on that level.
Blitzer too,or was in the past.
Jane = Grand slam! Redfish = 0.
Really? Interesting. From my perspective Miss Hamsher realizes that she can’t win a debate with me intellectually on this issue so she resorts to sophomoric retorts and poor humor to satiate the kool-aid drinking masses.
BRAVA JANE and yous kids
Jane, thank you, thank you!! You are the greatest.
I’ve donated to the “Marcy Fund” three times. As soon as some more scratch comes my way, I’ll go for #4.
You are, as we say in Hawai’i, “da kine” or “the best.”
Oh great, now they can vote the war funding without compunction. I’m so happy.
yes Jane is no match for you/
a oner!
Am I too late for the tantrum? Or did Holy Joe send redfish as a surrogate?
That’s goooood. *g*
What is the mechanism by which Pelosi and company orders the Federal court to do anything?
Congradulations Jane.
Congrats and thanks, again, Jane. I exchanged with my Congressperson on this early today – due to your postings. I appreciate your work and will now also make a second donation tonight to Marcy’s cause accordingly.
Obviously not.
Do
Not
Feed
it thinks ignoring it will signal an inability to cope, drawing commenters into a mess
let it live with it’s delusions
Damn! They make it so easy, too. Why on Earth would Jane want to debate an arrogant little [expletives deleted for the sake of the mods]who offers statements that we know he can’t substantiate?
Thanks, Jane, for this good news. Also for mentioning the Marcy Wheeler fund, to which i just enthusiastically donated. I have been waiting for this for 3 years! She’s the best.
Sorry Audrey – you are a minority, the American public including 6 in 10 liberals does not agree with you.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITI…..tion.poll/
“When it comes to the release of photos said to show U.S. military personnel abusing detainees, a national poll says Democrats and Republicans appear to agree”.
“Nearly three out of four people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Tuesday do not believe that the U.S. government should release the photos”.
“The poll suggests that 87 percent of Republicans are against the release of the photos, with 62 percent of Democrats in agreement. Three out of four independents also don’t want the photos to be revealed”.
“Obama has been getting some pressure from the liberal wing of his party to release the photos, but six in 10 liberals in the poll say that the photos should not be made publicly available,” CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
“If you decided you wanted to celebrate by donating to the Marcy Wheeler fund…”
Consider it done.
kind of odd isn’t it ?? on the one hand we have the claim from cheney that “torture kept us safe and saved [pick number]american lives ” on the other we now have “we can’t release the pictures of maltreated detainees .. it’ll get our boyz and gals in uniform killed ”
so .. torture has allegedly saved american lives.. but.. if revealed in photos .. it endangers american troops..
we already know the former claim is less than honest ..and the second has always be true ..
ergo sum:
the engineers and executors of the EIT program have done this nation a grave disservice ..
