President Obama explained his purpose right away in his symbolic address to the Muslim world from Cairo yesterday:
So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, those who promote conflict rather than the cooperation . . . .
I’ve come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect.
Not surprisingly, Karl Rove — this country’s most infamous practitioner of the politics of division and disrespect — wasn’t amused (via ThinkProgress):
ROVE: You know what? Who cares about whether or not they approve or like the president of the United States?. . .
I thought one commentator put it pretty good. The most powerful thing that Barack Obama has done to win the respect of the Islamic people, of the Muslim people around the world was three well-placed shots to end a negotiation with terrorists who had hijacked a U.S. boat.
As the last couple of U.S. election cycles should have taught him, Rove’s understanding of human nature is backwards. I’ll never forget this chilling anecdote from a Los Angeles Times story in March 2003:
In Doha, just a few miles from the U.S. Central Command base where Gen. Tommy Franks stands ready to run a war against Iraq, a theater audience made up mainly of Qataris breaks into applause as the leading actor reacts to television scenes of the collapsing World Trade Center towers with the words: "Americans go around punishing everyone. Now it’s time to let them feel something."
Remorseless displays of American power generate not respect, but rather a desire for revenge. That’s why it was so important for the world to see a U.S. president speaking knowledgeably and respectfully about Islam, emphasizing our country’s ideals and a desire to build a future together. And that’s why it’s just as important for Obama to back up these words by disengaging us as rapidly as possible from Iraq and Afghanistan so the Muslim world’s view of us isn’t shaped by images of hostility and destruction.
A changed worldwide view of the United States is our best hope for a more peaceful, less militarized future. Then again, that’s probably exactly what Karl Rove is worried about, isn’t it?

Good grief! Missed that.
But then, there really is only one President at a time, and I guess it’s Liz Cheney’s father.
Keep polishing that turd, Karl, just keep polishing.
It does shine pretty good.
Under the definitions we operate under here in the United States of America, Karl Rove is, himself, a “Terrorist.” The truth about this criminal and his co-conspirators is revealed here.
According to the US State Department, the definition of TERRORISM is not confined to the physical act of killing.
Terrorism occurs when a state utilizes fear tactics against its own people to accomplish political objectives.
The mere act or announcing a falsely construed terror alert – or overplaying the significance of a plot known not to be viable – is itself terrorism.
Tom Ridge admitted that many of the Terror Alerts announced under his command were in fact phony.
Remember the run on duct tape?
That was a clear case of state sponsored terrorism by the Government of the United States under the direction of Karl Rove against the people of the United States to achieve a political objective.
Karl Rove is a Terrorist under the definition ascribed by the US State Department.
Setting aside that I think Obama has taken some very bad domestic policy paths, this is a beauty. He is speaking almost as a disinterested auditor, appealing to an international audience, and daring the desperate so-called Republican ideologues to come after his sixty or seventy-whatever percent favorability. I am glad he took that thing out for a spin.
Isn’t the turd supposed to be finally testifying before congress in the next couple of days?
Amen.
The difference between the reception of Obama’s speech between the Arabs and Israeli settlers is like day and night. A journalist from the occupied territories told True Talk on WMNF today that the settlers were calling Obama the “n” word and other expletives. I’ll post the link to the show when the station puts it up.
No drinking games with “I don’t recall.” Unless, of course, ya wanna be comatose with alcohol poisoning.
Defiant settlers are also erecting illegal outposts

This is one of life’s binary issues (i.e., one that divides most people into two distinct groups). Some people think you get your way by being powerful and demanding everyone do what you want. The other is by convincing people you are right thru dialogue, and thus getting your way. (Or perhaps learning you are wrong via the dialogue and changing what you want, an outcome not available to the first group.)
I don’t expect the two groups ever to come to an agreement. I think it’s a permanent divide.
I want to know how the first group raises their kids and what the outcome has been, in comparison to the second group.
They could keep the meeting going for say 11 days round the clock.
OT. Rep Jan Schakowsky just said on the Ed show that she will be announcing on Monday whether she intends to run for Burris’s senate seat
While I agree that some folks think it’s about attacking first and sweeping up later, I don’t think that is what we are talking about these last few years.
At the risk of joining the leagues of conspiracy-theorists here, I am of the take that ChimpCo and allies are all about privatizing and owning the planet, not quelling West-Asia so we don’t have to fear terrorist attacks.
I would take Goldwater to these schmucks any day.
I am a church go-er, but I absolutely cringe when I hear goopers say we are a “################”.
No, we are a nation which honors freedom of religion, to worship whichever way you want. Least we used to be.
that’s weird. my computer just censored the phrase c.h.r.i.s.t.i.a.n. n.a.t.i.o.n with #### hahaha!
Swopa, please forgive my ignorance, but I’m not understanding your last sentence. Why would Karl Rove worry for a future that is more peacfull and less militarized? Does he hold stock in Big Daddy Dick’s war chest?
GOP seems to win in the National Security category of issues. That’s why they love to scare us 24/7.
Your issue is separate from the one I was talking about. I wouldn’t disagree, though perhaps I’d characterize it somewhat differently.
I view a great deal of what Obama has been doing as an attempt to strip the rethugs of that halo.
I just heard Sarah Palin telling us that we should be aware of the creation of a fearful population. (On the Ed show.) She’s very strange. Mark my words. Ooooh, brother.
I think her message is we should be scared of people who are trying to scare us.
No projection there. /s
I’m just saying that there are genuine Conservatives with supportable policy prescriptions, and we haven’t heard a peep from any of them in quite a while. I don’t know if I would recognize it if it walked up to me and slapped me in the face.
Good-faith arguments are over. We are left with absolutely nothing but machinations.
Pretty much the goal of PNAC’s Rebuilding America’s Defenses. Making the world “safe” for America’s corporations, opening markets for “American” goods made in China.
People like Sarah scare me. I have a really hard time even understanding her. All that I’m the mommy attitude, big hand gestures, but just a lot of words, strung together. I must be losing the brain war today.
Booga booga
If you try to understand that loony you will lose your mind.
You mean it’s not too late?
Palin reminds me of the little old man in the following story. My son was a toddler, my mother-in-law was completely senile & in a nursing home. When we visited her, we wheeled her into a broad hallway, and talked to each other in her presence, while our son ran up & down the hallway. The little old man, very spry, with a wonderful Irish lilt, came down & started to talk to us. I first wondered why he was in a nursing home. Next I wondered why I couldn’t understand him. Every word he spoke was English. I finally realized he was stringing his words together in a random fashion.
See my 29.
Exactly. Rove, Limbaugh, Cheney et al. want a country that is frightened and resentful. That’s fertile ground for them, politically.
Worry only if you start to really understand her.
Nah. Have a cup of tea, relax, tune out any and all rethugs, and have a good nights rest.
It worked for the Nazis. I’m sure Rove et al studied how they came to power extensively.
Oh gosh, you’re bringing back memories of when my dad was in a convalescent hospital. One time as we were coming back from a visit, I told my son, if I get to that point, just put me in a car and push it over a cliff.
Thanks Mike. And, while you’re ’splaining stuff to me and we’re talking about Karl Rove. WTF does turdblossom mean anyway?
With all due respect, Swopa, I’m not convinced the Rove quote was a direct response to the Obama quote, as seems implied by this post. Obama was speaking of relations between the U.S. and the Muslim world, Rove addressed Obama’s popularity in other countries.
I would not put it past Rove to twist Obama’s statement to make it personal, it is simply not clear to me that is what happened in this instance. Perhaps you can clarify the matter.
Staging of W’s speeches is straight out of Hitler’s playbook. Hitler always rented halls that were too small for the expected crowd, so he always had an overflow and looked like hords of people wanted to hear him. He was one of the first pols to rent a plane to get around the country when he was running for office. He always arrived late, but had entertainment to warm up the crowd, just to give a few examples that I remember.
Went thru it with my father too. My mom went pretty quickly, as did my brother. I agree with you. A quick end, not prolonged illness. If we could only control it.

All you need to know is that Palin will say anything that gets her what she wants, which is lots and lots of money and power. It doesn’t have to make sense. It just has to push your buttons to hand over whatever it is she wants.
Think of the creepiest charmer in a bar pulling out a stack of index cards with his various come on lines. It’s about that subtle.
Yep.
A really good friend of mine passed away several weeks ago. Massive heart attack. Brain dead. Gone. And, she was one of the best people I’ve known. I was glad she didn’t suffer. ‘Course it was quite the shock for her friends. Still.
Now there’s an
oxycontinoxymoron for ya.don’t forget the screening of the crowd, for gosh sake!
That bar story sounds like a good scene for a book or movie.
Oily operator?
Ed had a really good one. Shovel ready project = cleaning up after Bush.

Good one.
I had quite the eye opening experience of my life when a person I love dearly (family member, not my hubby) and I were discussing a very troubling topic. I had waited for years to discuss it with him because I had hoped the problem would go away.
I raised my concerns and he had his replies and when I was able to poke holes in them, he’d pull out another reply. He simply was not addressing my feelings at all, but working towards a particular outcome he wanted. i could practically see the index cards flipping his head, to see what would “work” on me. Fortunately I was able to detach myself enough (I had years to prepare) and was ready to part ways for a long time.
It was really painful but I sure learned a lot about not being manipulated in that moment.
Palin has nothing but manipulation.
Thanks again, Mike. I think. It’s a good thing it’s dinner time here yet.
The idea of the swarmy, lying Rove criticizing Pres. Obama makes me want to laugh instead of barf. I heard Laura on a similar tack this morning critizing, as she always does. A lot of focus on Mrs. O this morning.
I feel like an antique thinking about if you “can’t say something nice….They are so non-stop. They were insane about Clinton…they just can’t break the habit. Perseveration usually means brain damage of some sort.
You better not have the wrong bumper sticker on your car either.
Oh, didn’t know that! that’s a new one for me. thx.
Demi: Get the ginger beer. I found, on sale, Cherry Ginger Beer. Very freshing, probably not as good as the plain. Definitely my new treat and almost makes me sanely calm. Cheers, kid.
Its been my experience too that situations where we learn something can be painful. But, then we have that knowledge for the future. yeah?
hah! LOL.
I meant NOT dinner time. Sorry.
Ohhh yeah!!
:)
Saw a article quite a while ago that had some pix of the indoor crowds to illustrate it. Guys with those little short fat ties.

Seems to me that if Obama wants to improve the Muslims’ opinion of America
the very first thing Obama should do is
Enforce Our Federal Laws Against Torture and
Prosecute those in the Bush Administration who ordered or conspired to
Torture Muslims.
