This is what happens when the Crazy interviews the Stupid.
BECK: What a nightmare this is. Can you give me any example in history where this kind of stuff [GM] has happened — what’s happening today — and what does it lead to?
GOLDBERG: Well, I mean, we saw — I mean, it’s funny. I mean, again, you know, I’m not calling Barack Obama a Hitler and I’m not calling him Nazis and all the rest. But, you know, in fascism, we saw the people’s car. We call it the Volkswagen, where the state said what we’re going to do is we’re going to take over the auto industry — government and business and unions* are going to get together and we’re going to create cars to fill a political need rather than a market need and give people these cars.
Now, we’ve got Barack Obama saying that GM is going to make these affordable fuel-efficient cars — i.e., cars that Washington and the political planners in Washington want made rather than the cars that the market and the consumer are demanding.
I’ll avoid the obvious "Hitler built the Autobahn; Eisenhower built the US highway system; Eisenhower=Hitler" jokes and simply remind everyone that CAFE standards, which gave Berlin Washington the power to regulate fuel efficiency in automobiles, became law under Führer Gerald Ford. And in 2007, Reichschancellor Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act, which called for an increase in those not-what-the-market wants, fascistic regulations.
*Schoolchildren learn that one of the first things Hitler did was ban trade unions. Dumbass.

About Firedoglake
Doughy Pantload is such a Fiberal Lascist.
doughy pantload is from the GOP (Guano Or Poop) after all.
How DP came up with his trope:
DP: Labor unions should be outlawed!
Observer: What are you, a fascist?!?
DP: I know you are, but what am I?
(scampers away giggling)
I’d love to know what kind of cars these two idiots drive. Weren’t all the German car companies were involved in using slave labor during the war? How ironic would it be for them to drive a BMW or an Audi. So much for supporting the US and their industries by driving locally made cars yeah?
I am trying to picture the atmosphere of the room when the pantload and Mr. Teary-eyed are together. It would probably make you throw-up.
Right and GM, Chrysler and Ford are doing so well right now because Americans love SUV’s !
Toyota, Honda Nissan, etc took market share from the big three by making small cars and being smart enough to make a profit off of them.
Would American cars be competitive price wise if American Healthcare costs were the same as Japan is a better question.
Than the Statement without Fact that Americans want SUV’s. Americans were buying small cars even before Bush made oil prices go up.
When Glenn and Doughy use words, it’s like watching children make mud pies. Eventually, you hope, they’ll grow out of it.
Just what consumers are demanding SUV’s Glen? Where is the Market demand? I thought GM was looking for a buyer for Hummer because they were not selling?
here’s a pic of Jonah Goldberg in his car. I can’t make out the model, but perhaps someone who knows cars better than I do can:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rv1y…..in_car.jpg
Beck, alas, does drive American. He’s said he owns a Cadillac Escalade and a GMC Yukon. His wife drives a Saturn.
I bet the Volkswagon has sold more than than the Hummer. Government built cheap fuel efficient car for the people 1.
Big SUV’s former symbols of suburban elite wealth now they represent the big three’s folly.
Yes the Big three only made profit off of big cars and lost money on small cars but whose fault is that?
If Healthcare costs were the same in America as Japan would the Big three need a bailout now?
Even if they still did need a bailout the bailout would be for less money.
George Bush had Blackwater= Hitler had the SA….
How about — Hitler favored low taxes and opposed unions. Entire GOP = Hitler.
I thought GM was planning to come out with a new fuel efficient SUV.
Except it’s “Heil Rushbo” these days.
Volkswagen is the largest car manufacturer in Europe. They’re wildly successful. It seems to me that Goldberg’s example shows that it takes government to create success, because private industry can’t do it on its own. He should have brought up Toyota and Honda and Hyundai as well, all successful government-backed car companies.
I want to thank you all for paying attention and responding where necessary to all the bullshit, because I just can’t be bothered with it anymore.
There is just no such thing as rational debate from most Republicans; just bullshit talking points that will sell books and lectures via wingnut welfare.
Someone please call me when these a-holes return to some sense of decency or rational thought.
Same old same old.
Republicans = Hipocracy much?
‘cept for Beck. He proudly drives just such a guzzler. Two actually.
It is all about repetition. Murdoch thinks if he just keeps repeating stuff people will believe it no matter how outrageous it is. And he has had a lot of success with that. I am just hoping that in the aftermath of the Bush presidency people will be a little more skeptical.
Hitler: Reichstag fire, the Enabling Acts, the SA/SS, invasion of Poland, Goebbels as Propaganda Minister.
Bush: 9/11, the PATRIOT Act, Blackwater, the invasion of Iraq, Rove as….Propaganda Minister.
Obviously, Obama is Hitler.
When even Jonah “Well, I mean, we saw — I mean, it’s funny. I mean, again, you know,” Goldberg has to fumble for time while he “thinks” how to respond to Beck’s idiocy, you know we’re off in crazyland.
Well, I mean, we saw — I mean, it’s funny. I mean, again, you know….
I mean, like, well…, you know.. like, I mean, Jonah you are like, a dick.
After watching Beck get his ass handed to him by a bunch of women on the view I see him as nothing but laughable. Even more funny was the tirade he threw AFTER he left the View and was safe in his own confines. We have a name for
womenmen who act like that in these parts.Well you know it’s funny…the VW is/was very popular in the US and some American citizens made a lot of American money bringing them over here to our Free Market System and selling them to American citizens.
What jerks.
I wish I could come up with catchy name that meant Iago from Othello, cuz that’s what they are. evil suggesters of more evil.
Speaking about cars, anyone have any info on the dispositon of the “to be sold” GM businesses – about 60,000 jobs, I think? As of a few days ago, I think nobody credible wants SAAB, everybody wants Saturn (17 bidders, including all the major Japanese and Korean manufacturers plus people like Penske automotive), no word on Pontiac, and apparently Hummer’s been sold to a undisclosed foreign truck maker that wants to discontinue the consumer line (maintaining commercial vehicle production) and made commitments to keep at least 3000 manufacturing and engineering jobs in the US.
Phoenix Woman has the latest MN up[date, upstairs!
Franken-Coleman Update, 06/03/09: What Will Smilin’ Tim Do?
btw, anyone else think that Gerald Ford (in the picture above) actually looks like Glen Beck?
So this Jonah Goldberg fellow can actually read consumers minds? and project the market? He’s reading the minds of the slow-to-change petro industry.
What scares the Becks and the Goldbergs et al is that a president with credibility can use the bully pulpit gently to change some minds about the desirability of driving fuel efficient, American made vehicles, and they are fearful of that. They are even afraid of presidential persuasion that urges us to put aside our differences whenever possible and seek commion ground. You see, if that happens, fear does not sell any longer.
The kind of presidential persuasion that appeals to most Republicans is to be afraid and thus easy to manipulate. After all, the current Republican base is mostly comprised of those who believe lies.
Of course, the audience these people intend to reach don’t know the difference between fascism and socialism or the fact that free market economics a la Milton and the Chicago Boys have been discredited by the current world economy.
We are in serious trouble here. I have traveled throughout the former Soviet bloc countries and western Europe. The people in those countries, especially the young university students are well versed in their own histories and in world history. From what I know about people I talk to here, from people in their 50s to those in their 20s, history isn’t a strong point, nor is geography. A rambling answer like Goldberg’s will play very well with these people.
Doughy? Check.
Pantload? Check.
everybody knows Jonah has superpowers /s
Blue T. you hit the nail on the head. It was after that the ‘Chicago
People’ sent little HMO enablers all over the country, and built the
nations new biggest industry ‘Health Care’ by 1977. Nixon’s Wage & Price
controls in ‘72 I thought were pretty facist, had to keep that Line Backer
bombing machine going over Hanoi!
Jonah Goldberg is profoundly ignorant. He accused organic food of being Nazi because he’d vaguely heard that Nazis believed in the organic (the connection of blood to soil). How can anyone that dumb be given any kind of media forum, get published (as his books have) and have any voice on important issues? How can anyone so dumb even live?
Fuel-efficient cars are okay, as long as they don’t get shoved down my throat. If I can’t get a Ford Mustang, I’m not buying American. I’ll buy Asian, unless the gov outlaws that…
If these two stupid men are going to disparage government “oversight” of the auto industry, they ought not pick the VW Beetle as their example, despite its connection to Nazi Germany. The Bug is probably the single most popular car in the world and one that continued to be manufactured up through 2003, when, says Wikipedia, the last 30,000 units were built, down from more than a million in 1971. These idiots laugh at the “political need rather than the market need” that brought the Veedub into existence, but history–surprise!–shows they’re wrong.
