Don’t get me wrong. The "who will screw us on EFCA" merit badge will probably get passed around the Senate a few times before settling on someone (or more likely "someones") who are politically safe from union retribution, and Diane Feinstein is top of the likely contender list. But I’m not sure this means what they think it means:
BREAKING NEWS: Feinstein Pulls Support For Union Legislation
Written by Jon Dell
A delegation from the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, joined by similar groups from around the country, is in Washington to have meetings to express their opposition to the bill. At around 12:00 eastern time this afternoon, the group met with Senator Diane Feinstein.
"She will not vote for the bill, and she will not support any modification allowing the process to bypass secret ballots, and she believes that now is not the right time for this type of legislation given the downturn in the economy," said John Shaffery, a local lawyer and vice president for the SCV Chamber Board of Directors, who was in the meeting.
The announcement came as a complete surprise to the group.
“We’re still catching our breath,” Shaffery continued. “This is truly unexpected given that Senator Feinstein was the key senator that we were here to meet with today.”
Yeah, we get it. You want to break news. But at bare minimum, one Jon Dell should have:
- Looked up the meaning of the word "cloture," which apparently he does not know, since Feinstein’s vote for the bill isn’t needed for its passage
- Asked Feinstein for comment instead of taking the word of an organization spending millions of dollars to defeat the bill, and
- Done a simple Google search to determine Feinstein’s history with the bill, and discovered that she offered up her own compromise three weeks ago:
[Diane Feinstein's] proposal would replace the card-check provision, which would allow workers to unionize if a majority signed authorization cards and strip a company’s ability to demand a secret ballot election. "It’s a secret ballot that would be mailed in … just like an absentee ballot. The individual could take it home and mail it in," Feinstein said. If a majority mailed the ballots to the National Labor Relations Board, the NLRB would recognize the union.
What about that? Did she say anything about her own "compromise" bill? Well, we don’t know, because a bunch of "breathless" delegates from the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce who know nothing about the history of the bill or Feinstein’s position apparently didn’t ask her about it, they just told their story to an equally incurious reporter who quickly decided that they "broke national news" in a "major turn of events."
Feinstein carefully parses her position on EFCA no matter who she’s talking to. There’s nothing new here, nothing that should lead the "journalist" to the conclusions he’s reached, and nothing inconsistent with what Feinstein has said as recently as three weeks ago.
It should have been nothing more than a Chamber of Commerce press release, but alas, it’s now "news."
Update: And like clockwork, Feinstein denies it:
Speaking on background, a confidant of the senator went a bit further. "This must be [Shaffery's] first rodeo because the story hasn’t changed much. It has been the same: She is looking for a compromise. And anyone who says otherwise is engaging in some wishful thinking."
But the intellectually scrupulous Workforce Fairness Institute has already blasted it out to reporters. Too bad, Jon Dell. Your top Google search will soon be how your Chamber of Commerce pals made you look like a putz.

Leave Glenn Reynolds out of this.
Diane Feinstein is bad enough on many counts, but leveraging her awfulness into inaccurate headlines – that takes a special flavor of unctuous.
Is Dangerstein about?
Heh. That was fast.
Great work, as always, Jane.
Jane, my fingers are crossed so tightly that they are getting numb in hoping that some level of embarrassment will infuse reporters when one of them is caught making up unresearched news like this, rather than reporting care-fully (sic) as they should.
Not holding my breath, though, as I’d be gone quick.
How timely! I got a letter from her yesterday. Key graf:
She is positioning herself as the key player in a compromise, as she always tries to. Therefore, she will go to some length to avoid the kind of position ascribed to her by the overeager Chamber of Santa Clarita and their puppet Mr Dell.
Is there a chance that this might have the salutary effect of forcing Feinstein not to shiv the EFCA?
Since when do we expect the rethugs to understand english speak let alone nuanced english speak. See Nancy Pelosi speak re: CIA.
“I work for a newspaper. I am so stupid I am going to help destroy a highly valued and cherished institution, the very newspaper industry that writes my checks. My name is [[insert your choice of pun for stupid here]].”
Ha, ha, here’s her statement this afternoon. Nice try, fellahs:
well. At least this inaccurate press will guarantee a deluge of pro-card check correspondence to our good senator’s San Fran office…
I must say, “mischaracterizing” is a pretty strong word for a Senator to use to describe something constituents have said about her position. To follow that with “The truth is…” makes clear her upset.
I don’t think the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce’s trip to DeeCee will be seen as nearly the success they thought it was earlier today. In fact, it seems like a net loss for their team. Pissing off a potential ally, lying about what she said in a meeting, breathlessly running to a credulous reporter, making the Senator issue a strong statement denouncing what you’ve done — that’s not lobbying, that’s the Marx Brothers.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
I think the dam is about to break and the Sotomayor confirmation is gunna be the force that breaks it…if the Democrats force early judiciary hearings and a floor vote before the August recess, the weakness of the Republicans in the Senate will be exposed and the number of Repubfascists who vote for cloture will be the minumum number of votes the Dems ken expect from them when healthcare and EFCA hit the floor.
It is particularly important that the Democrats flex their muscle and push the heartings up and out before the August recess so that healthcare and EFCA will not be pushed back into the election cycle. If the confirmation is done by August, there will be nuthin that the fascists ken do to derail the train for healthcare and EFCA.
Trust me Sister Hamsher…after all I was wrong once last year but the numbers are gunna be there for all to see in the votes for Sotomayor.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION AND DON’T TELL THE BASTARDS THAT THEY DON’T HAVE ANY CLOTHS ON!!
Wow, so nice to know that the Village/Beltway/DC Stenographic School of journamalism has made it to the hinterlands!
I have a friend who went to J-school. She’s 50-ish. Insists that bloggers just write random stuff about their feelings and opinions and don’t do “real” journalism. Insists that print journalists still do real reporting (as a rule, not a rarity). I gotta figure out a way to be openly skeptical about mainstream journalism without making her feel like I’m attacking her as a professional. My scorn for the M$M makes that hard.

Hope that delegation from the Santa Clarita Valley CC has some strong tooth paste. That shoe leather can be tough to get out from between your teeth.
Teddy, isn’t this Feinstein reply like so many others you have posted here?
Form letters are strong with this one…
She is positioning herself right where she sees the middle. She wants to be the hero here, and that means not doing what the Chamber crowed about her having done today. Pushing her to issue such a strong statement re-asserting her position in the middle, including such strong language about what they did — they earned themselves no friendship from her today.
Feinstein is just another worthless lying corporate imperial pig.
J Dell, Putz…one who sucks putz from Satan’s boils.
Teddy has the good news upstairs!
