"Prenatal testing without prenatal choices is medical fraud"
- George Tiller
There’s no point in sugar coating it, Dr. George Tiller was assassinated. Tiller is the fourth physician to be murdered by self-identified "pro-lifers" since 1993. And nobody can say they were surprised. Imagine if this guy’s name was Randall al-Terry:
"We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God."
Al Zawahiri makes identical statements. Yet the media enables such malevolent stupidity when it just reports Tiller as a "late term abortion" doctor, like he sat around waiting to kill. THIS is what George Tiller provided:
Conjoined twins alone is not what was so difficult but the way they were joined meant that at best only one child would survive the surgery to separate them and the survivor would more than likely live a brief and painful life filled with surgery and organ transplants. We were advised that our options were to deliver into the world a child who’s life would be filled with horrible pain and suffering or fly out to Wichita Kansas and to terminate the pregnancy under the direction of Dr. George Tiller.
We made an informed decision to go to Kansas. One can only imagine the pain borne by a woman who happily carries a child for 8 months only to find out near the end of term that the children were not to be and that she had to make the decision to terminate the pregnancy and go against everything she had been taught to believe was right. This was what my wife had to do. Dr. Tiller is a true American hero. The nightmare of our decision and the aftermath was only made bearable by the warmth and compassion of Dr. Tiller and his remarkable staff.
Bill O’Reilly, the term for Dr. Tiller was hero.

This is what I cannot, for the life of me, understand:
Why would a pregnant woman stay pregnant for 8 months, and then just decide she wanted to end the pregnancy, unless there was a good reason? No one has explained this to me. I am the mother of 3 children. I know what pregnancy is like. If you don’t want the child, you have the abortion early. In much rarer cases, a woman might have a 2nd trimester abortion — like with a very young woman who literally doesn’t know she is pregnant. But 3rd trimester? No. Women don’t just wake up one morning and sing, “Ah, this will ruin my figure/I can’t go on that vacation to Jamaica now, etc. It simply makes no sense. They have 3rd trimester abortions out of necessity. Period.
Of course, these “right to life” freaks actually think pain and suffering are noble. Some even say, “The fetus has no heart/brain/lungs? Well, miracles happen.”
To me, they should all be placed in a mental institution. They are very sick. And one way is that they care not one bit about children after they are born. They love the fetus, but hate the born child.
There are some word limits we apply here in the morning, as it is, this post exceeds it to contain as much of that quote as reasonably possible.
But please read it at its original link. The person, did NOT know of the status of the true physical condition of her pregnancy until shortly before the abortion. As are the cases for many such people.
It’s a real tragedy that a fine American has been murdered by people not fit to tie his laces. Dr Tiller devoted his life to alleviating suffering. Some Christian that thinks a God of love wants people to suffer for the good of their soul.
I also find it hard to get my mind around what goes through the heads of these people. It doesn’t advance matters to say they are terribly screwed up. It is hard for me that they act out of sense of the sacredness of human life (as they define it); because if they did, they wouldn’t murder people. I’m driven back to my initial view, which is that people like the assassin lead miserable meaningless lives, and have glommed on to this particular madness as a lifeboat. They could have gone anywhere with their madness. But there is someting else: madness is always with us. It takes a certain context for it to manifest itself in this particular way, rather than, say, shooting a dozen children in a schoolyard. No one goes on teevee to say that it s wonderful thing, and too bad the kids didn’t get a chance to repent before they were swept away by the Hand of God. We need to have laws against the extreme anti-abortion rhetoric just like we have against extreme anti-Semitism. First amendment be damned.
Why the quotation marks around “terrorist”?
Terrorism is defined as:
That is exactly what these people are doing.
“In April 1996, Roeder was arrested in Topeka after Shawnee County sheriff’s deputies stopped him for not having a proper license plate. In his car, officers said they found ammunition, a blasting cap, a fuse cord, a one-pound can of gunpowder and two 9-volt batteries, with one connected to a switch that could have been used to trigger a bomb.”
This is what “Culture of Life” means. Don’t forget.
They are the American Taliban…hear them roar.
Good morning, pups. It’s Cohen and Krugman in the NYT today. Mr. Cohen, writing from Dalat, Vietnam, gives us “Indochina Dreaming,” a story of baroque intrigue in which colonial France meets California in Vietnam’s highlands. Mr. Krugman, in “Reagan Did It,” says the change in America’s financial rules was Ronald Reagan’s biggest legacy and the gift that keeps on taking.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. June seems to be here, although I don’t quite know how. Off to get ready to labor in the salt mines. Have a good day.
Guaranteed not one of the American Taliban Members would have adopted the conjoined twins had they lived and had the woman decided to give them up for adoption. Trust me on this. The extreme right wing are just control freaks and in their minds they believe every baby aborted would have chosen to be a republican when the child reached legal age. That’s all they care about. They don’t care about the mother, the zygote, or much of anything else. They just see their party continuing to die in front of their eyes. Awwwwwwwwwwww…..so sad.
My wife will open her clinic as usual this morning and will continue to provide women with the services they have chosen. THat is our answer to these nutters.
Maybe we should treat all republican headquarters across America the same as clinics in this country? How would they feel? I bet scared shitless.
Since my blog is on the fritz this morning, I’ll post my thoughts here:
Where did the Air France flight go to?

This is hate given license to rule. Afghanistan,Iraq,Pakistan,Tillman, rendition, secret torture prisons, Hell fire missiles, Drones ,targeted assassinations where else could we wind up.? We love spilling blood more than life itself.
Where is everyone this morning?
This is what the Right does after they lose elections.
1960. 1992. 2008.
It’s who they are.
Nudge, nudge, wink, wink:
Morning. Just got here and have to leave in a minute. My thoughts are all about GM. It’s reported that 2600 dealerships will be closed. Since Mr.Solai manages a GM dealership, I’m a tad concerned.
Dalat is wonderful but it’s not really in what we knew as “The Highlands”, Pleiku and such.
Ah, I see he talks about A Highland but not THE Highlands.
The abortion laws even protect the fetus when it dies in utero. A family member lost her baby near full term and the state she lived in had banned third term abortion. She had to go out-of-state to have the procedure done. The remains were then flown back to a coroner in her home state to varify that the procedure her doc sent her out-of-state for was indeed needed and that the fetus had died in utero. Otherwise, she and her doc could be charged with murder. (Nice to have this explained to you by a state official when you are processing a tragic loss.)
A year later, I was talking with a pro-life lobbiest in my home state. She said, “The fetus died, that voids anything we prolifers lobbied for in regards to third term. That should not happen. It’s not abortion then, it’s a medical procedure.”
I explained that there are intrusive consequences to a couple’s tragic loss with the laws she had worked so hard to get on the books. Even though it was not “intended” what she did not realize was that the state had to “shape” the policy in order to come up with laws/procedures that would make sure the anti third term abortion laws were enforced. Thus, those faced with tragic third-term loss, have to submit to the laws to prove their “in utero” loss.
She said she had no idea. I said, “Exactly. These are personal situations which your laws you lobbied for had no right to intrude upon.” I asked her to explain to me how you enforce no third term abortion when there is a third term loss and the expired fetus does not go into spontaneous abortion and the mother is not a candidate for a c-section because the time that lapsed waiting for the spontaneous abortion now put her life at risk, voiding other options including induction because she had previous c-sections?
She said she had, “No ideas on how to address such situations.”
I finished with telling her that, “My family members never received the remains for cremation and burial. The state then disposed of the remains as medical waste after the coroner did his examination. Thus, her lobby efforts for “respect for life,” had no respect for “after life”.
She was speechless.
I know a lot of people have strong feelings about what happened to Dr. Tiller, but let’s not overstate the blame. He was not killed by the pro-life movement, the Republican Party, or “the right.” He was killed by Scott Roeder, a sick individual with a history of sociopathic tendencies. His actions were cowardly and hypocritical, but they were his actions alone.
Casting blame for his actions on the movements he pretended to represent is akin to blaming the environmentalist movement (and of course the Democratic Party and “the left”) for the actions of Ted Kaczynski.
Scott Roeder is a terrorist. There is no difference between him and a Talaban who thinks that his god desires him to terrorize and kill others. He should be put in federal prison along with the other terrorists.
with a grateful heart – please send her my thanks and support

Nothing left to grieve over and bury. How awful. So sorry for your friend.
I think that even the far Right is ashamed of its membership today.
Reading Google search results for the killer yielded Operation Rescue’s web site and a calendar of events. Sick stuff!
Seems that these groups should be charged as co-conpirators in Tiller’s death given the inflamatory language you find by just Googling. Several noted Right to Life leaders have argued loudly and in print that murdering a doctor practicing abortion is not a crime in that Rosa Parks broke the law but was justified in doing so. Rosa sat on a bus bench; she didn’t drive half way across a state and kill someone in church after posting blogg comments that the dr’s church needs to be confronted.
I wrote to FDL’s “idea e-mail address” asking where there might be middle ground with the “Pro Life” nuts. It is hard for me to see any “middle ground” with these deranged people.
Hopefully there will be some good to come out of this in that, along with the Untarian Universalist Church shooting in TN, more people will come to see that the GOP has been taken over by lunatics and, so repulsed, will reconsider supporting the party in any way. Maybe the middle ground is that most of us are sane and want to distance ourselves from insanity.
He is a terrorist. He associates with other terrorists or radicals.
Many groups use young, or trouble members to do the dirty work. How knows, perhaps they were just talking tought all that time–seems to me they are fools if they did not know they were inciting people.
No, I do not think they have a factory to churn these people out. But when does dogma and spewing violence turn to manufacturing terrorists? I am guessing sometimes its a seamless transition and some members look up and see what they have become. I hope when these people see what they have become they are sick, and do not quietly smile.
“these “right to life” freaks actually think pain and suffering are noble.”
That is a great point. Living with suffering underlies much of religious teaching, especially Catholicism. Church history is replete with persecuted saints, the blessed who wore hair shirts or whipped themselves bloody. They were suffering as Christ suffered in order to be more ‘Christ-like.’ Obedience and pain- your sins are forgiven. That’s the path to heaven.
When women decide NOT to obey, refuse to live a life of endless misery, or even die to bring to term an abnormal pregnancy, they are demonized as evil.
I am struck by the ignorance of those, like Shell, who seem to think that after carrying a child nearly to full term suddenly, as if on a whim, any woman would casually decide on a late term abortion. It is preposterous to assume that women substitute abortion for birth control. The same religious right that condemned the out of wedlock pregnant young woman and labeled her a “tramp” now supports abstinence only education and embraces the pregnant high school dropout. The same Pro-lifers who incite violence against those who perform abortion or choose abortion should go back and review the horrors of death and disfigurement caused by back alley abortionists prior to the ruling on Roe vs. Wade.
How stupid (or brain-washed) can some people be? Late term abortions are extremely rare procedures, performed by a small number of physicians. They are a last resort for those who have discovered through modern diagnostics that their child’s medical condition is utterly hopeless. On the advice of their doctors and with the counsel of their clergy, there is no more heartbreaking, agonizing, soul-searching decision for a pregnant couple to make. Late term abortion is not an impulsive or selfish choice.
Current law uphold’s the right for all women. It does not force or require any woman, any couple, anywhere in the U.S. to end any pregnancy by abortion, late-term or otherwise. A rational person would hope that late term abortions will become totally unnecessary or increasingly rare. However, by law, women deserve the right to make the choice.
Reading comprehension, kids. Shell is on your side. Attaturk and CarolA (and presumably others) are reading Shell to say exactly the opposite of what she’s saying.
“Why would a pregnant woman stay pregnant for 8 months, and then just decide she wanted to end the pregnancy, unless there was a good reason”
is a statement that pregnant women do not actually do this. There are plenty of people holding the opinion you’re correctly rejecting, but so far they’re not posting here.
