There seems to be some confusion, especially on the right, about what the term "politicize" means. (Updated)
To politicize something is to artificially inject politics into an otherwise non-partisan or non-political event or issue of national concern. For example, one can make partisan arguments when discussing defense or health care or tragedies like the Virginia Tech shootings — but it’s certainly possible to refrain from doing so.
But is it possible to take the politics out of a politically-motivated assassination?
Michelle Malkin thinks we should.
Unfortunately, some are not content to leave it at that for now. They fail to respect that there is a proper time and place to indulge in political battle. … Tiller’s family is grieving. Those who have jumped to score political points before Tiller is even buried are no better than the Phelps family thugs of the “Westboro Baptist Church” who respect no bounds of civility.
Aziz Poonawalla apparently does too.
It’s inevitable that the incident would be instantly politicized, but I found something very surreal and familiar about it – essentially, conservatives are now finding themselves playing defense, in a way that American muslims know all too well.
And even the Christian Science Monitor seems confused.
Anti-abortion activists worry that the crime is so shocking that it could be politicized and turned against them in the confirmation hearings for Judge Sotomayor.
Tiller’s assassination cannot be "politicized" because it’s inherently political. It was an act of political terrorism by a right-wing extremist — just like the Knoxville Unitarian church attack which we were also told not to "politicize."
More importantly, it is totally inappropriate, indeed irresponsible, to dismiss the shooter as "a nut" or "a crazy" while ignoring the rhetoric and actions of the political movement of which he was an active member.
And that’s what they’re telling us to do when they complain about "politicizing" Scott Roeder’s terrorism.
UPDATE
Right on cue, Bill Donohue.

Of course they want to take the politics out of this-because the politics of the killer are their politics, combined with the courage of their convictions and a willingness to act. Like Timothy McVeigh’s psychiatrist said,” He didn’t do it because he was crazy-he did it because he was serious.”
How do you politicize politics?
Catch 22?
Their whole “let the family grieve, now’s not the time for politics” schtick is literally making me sick to my stomach. These misbegotten creatures are responsible for Dr. Tiller’s death, and, like the cowardly children they are, now want to deflect that responsibility by appealing to “civility.” No, Malkin, and all the rest of you soulless freaks, you can’t wash this blood off your hands.
I invite each and every one of these troglodytes to bite me. With knobs on.
If proven guilty Scott Roeder’s name will be added to Operation Rescue’s Hall of Fame, along with cowards like Paul Hill and Randall Terry.
And now all of the anti-abortion activitists are worried that they will be tarred with the same brush as Roeder, as if it wouldn’t take a supreme act of self-delusion to not consider Roeder when dealing with militant anti-abortion activists.
well then.. I guess the rethugs shouldn’t have have politicized AQ/Islamist terror to the point that it became the sole defining issue in just about every single race their candidates ran in 2004.
Poonawalla got his logic flipped around.. although the rethugs putting themselves into the position of Islamists kind of has a certain ironic appeal to it. American Taliban indeed.
This absolutely correct. He will be seen as a martyr to the cause, a heroic casualty. His attack, conviction, and subsequent sentence will be seen as badges of honor.
it is their old play book. they used it for the wellstone funeral, too.
they call for civility rings hollow from MM.
And why are even left-leaning, pro-choice blogs referring to the victim as “Abortion Doctor George Tiller.”
George Tiller, M.D. was a physician, a husband, a father and proprietor of a health clinic that provided needed services to women, which included abortion.
Don’t make it so easy for anyone to dehumanize this man who was ruthlessly gunned down in his own church.
Hard thing to say but Dr Tiller’s assassination hopefully will re-ignite the pro-choice movement. Many, if not most, of the young women I know naively take women’s reproductive issues for granted. They are unaware of the struggles that occurred that allows them to use something as simple as birth control pills.
Well said.
It’s obviously unfair to comment on the politics of a political assassination when the politics involved are those of the Great Patriotic Right. We should know better, and be more civil. /s
Of course, the naked hypocrisy and cynicism of the right wing calling for civility boggles the mind.
I got their fuckin’ civil ratcheer.
a doctor was assassinated for providing needed health care to women.
to make that not political would require believing women have no right to a political voice of their own.
oh, wait.
amen!
Amen.
Calls for civility are especially popular among those who are responsible.
With knobs on?
David Neiwert called them on their gambit in his latest book:
personal responsibiity my ass
I wanna see a pic of the alleged shooter.
Forgive the undue curiosity, but why?
I like a face to go with a name in instances like this. Mugshot photos tell a story of their own.
I’d like to have a face to place with the name also.
(horribly placed incorrect photo deleted)
That looks like a young Dr Tiller and the filename says Tiller. Where’d it come from?
As calls for negotiations almost always come from those in a weak position on the battlefield, so are calls for “non-politicization’ emanating from those in the weak political position here.
the only one I’ve seen so far
fyi – just saw local DA stating it will be state vs federal case – uh, I don’t think so – Secretary Napolitano. General Holder . . . Come On Down !
Ah. Well, have no fear. I’m sure Roeder’s face will be all over the media very soon.
Eichmann didn’t kill ANYONE!!!
Thank heavens edit is back. Horrible mistake. Sorry.
Interesting clip. Thanks.
lol No harm no foul.
These people are rightwing political terrorists and need to be labled as such. Their churches and organizations need to be listed as known terrorist organizations (they are no different than Al Qaeda or Hezbollah in this regard). Their leaders (yes, I am looking at you Randall Terry) need to be arrested and tried for inciting terrorism. We need to make the right and the Republican Party, which has benefited from their anger and mobilization for the past 40 years, own these people as their own. This is the Republican base.
it’s not terrorism when a good cristian repuglitard murders somebody
in fact, it isn’t even murder
cuz law and moral values only matter when you are a Liberal Democrat
murder and terrorism are REPUGLITARDED moral values
it’s all they got
their ideas failed, the People know they are ignorant hypocritical anti-American pig shits
the repuglitards just have to murder people
it’s all they got …
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I’m an impatient dfh and I want it right now waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa lol
Back to the cesspool.
Namaste
Ironically, about the same time this murder was taking place in a church in Wichita, I was teaching a Sunday school class at my church in Indiana. My lesson included a quote from theologian, Walter Wink:
Not that I’m saying Dr. Tiller was evil, but even if you believe he was a murderer (which I don’t, but many Christians do), a Christian shouldn’t do to him what he is accused of doing to others.
As far as I’m concerned any theology that can justify murder for any reason is NOT following Christ.
Where were the calls not to politicize Terry Schiavo? Not from the folks quoted in the post…
clearly symptomatic of a personality disorder…we see this over and over with the most cretinous repubs.
exactly.
If I were antiabortion, I would not resort to these tactics any more than I would approve of environmentalists or animal rights activists committing extreme acts of violence.
to add to your point:
from the wiki
And though I wouldn’t claim that nobody on the left ever crosses the line, I think you see a huge difference in how the biggest media voices of the left address issues.
You don’t see Olberman, Stewart, Maddow or Colbert say or do anything that could be inferred as inciting violence against those whom they ridicule or criticize.
The same can’t be said of O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Malkin et al.
To me that speaks volumes about the morality and decency of their views.
My slighted edited comment from Tbogg’s post on MM:
People like her see this as a holy war-a war to protect and avenge the “pre-born.” There’s no middle ground, no “reasonable people can reasonably disagree,” no compromise. Michelle’s job (right wing screech-hag) depends on manufacturing outrage, hate and death.
People like Malkin, O’Reilly, Terry, Limbaugh, etc. are accessories to murder. They are just as responsible for Tiller’s killing as Scott Roeder.
The calls not to politicize this “horrible tragedy” are disingenous in the extreme. Just like New Orleans, when the right laments the blame game, you can pretty much take it to the bank they know they bear much of the responsiblity. The wingnut teevee shouters undoubtedly know Tiller’s blood is on their hands, too.
Thanks for sharing that quote. I really like that.
fyi – Doctor Tiller was murdered on the 6th anniversary of Eric Rudolph’s capture – just a coincidence I’m sure
Wow.
The wingnuts have made violence a romantic passion. When they argue that they kill to protect the innocent we must point out that our constitution and laws protect us from people like them. I fear there is much more violence to come.
Time to start posting photographs of protestors out side of the clinics and labeling them American Taliban.
“Defend Life”, a command you’ll find along with an image of the pope (who is giving the command) on the back bumpers of many anti-abortionists cars.
Catholic tradition concerning the 5th commandment:
When Our Lord quoted this Commandment (Matt19: 18) He said: Thou shalt do no murder.
This gives a more exact meaning to the words: “Thou shalt not kill”.
What is forbidden is the unlawful taking of life. A man has a right to defend himself and to defend others against an unjust aggressor. (Where there is a proportionate cause his action is not murder but self-defence. Obviously there must be some proportion between the cause and the action. A man has a right to defend his life if necessary by shooting. But if his apple tree is being pilfered he has no right to defend that by shooting.)
Again in so far as it is necessary to defend society against criminals the State has a right to impose capital punishment. Notice, however, that the question of whether capital punishment is necessary or not is not decided by the Commandment. That is a question which every State must decide for itself in the light of its own circumstances. (In fact today many States would say it is no longer necessary.)
Wilful murder is the killing of the innocent. It is so grievous a crime that it is called in the Bible a sin crying to heaven for vengeance.1
1Three other sins are so described in the Bible. They are the sin of Sodom, Oppression of the poor, and Defrauding labourers of their wages.
Every man’s life belongs to God. No private individual has authority to take directly the life of the innocent. This applies equally well to the life of an unborn child. Direct abortion is murder. It is true that sometimes as a result of another operation, for example the removal of a diseased womb, the unborn child may die. In that case the death of the child is not chosen as the means to the end. But directly to kill the child is murder just as much as would be directly to kill the mother.

Life begins at conception the catholics the question is one of is it only the nascent human being that one “defends”? How about the lives of children that were abused by the Pope’s priests? Not according to Bill Donahue: http://digbysblog.blogspot.com…..stero.html those kids had it coming and why should we believe them over a priest, A PRIEST!
I read this testimonial to Dr. Tiller earlier today: http://www.balloon-juice.com/?…..nt-1250658
Who’s life did the Pope mean?
And this contradiction from the first linked website:
Commandments 4 to 10 sum up the rules which deal with our relations with one another.
Loving Our Neighbour – Is It Possible?
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. We are all ready to pay lip service to this principle. We are all ready to point the finger of scorn at a man who does not seem to live up to it. But the fact is that all of us find a certain difficulty in seeing just how it is possible.
There are certain people whom we just do not like. There are others whom we cannot help liking. And there are many others whom we don’t know at all and therefore we cannot tell whether we like them or not.
How can I say therefore that I really can love my neighbour as myself? The answer is that we can love a person without necessarily liking him.
An enemy airman who has just been dive-bombing us is shot down and is lying wounded by his parachute. We don’t even know him, we can’t pretend to like him. But we pick him up, put him on a stretcher and bandage his wounds. That is loving him. It means that in spite of everything we recognise that he is a son of God and in so far as he is a son of God we wish him well and we will do what we can to help him.
In short, loving our neighbour means seeing him for what he is, first and foremost, a son of God. Every man is loved by God. Our Lord died for all men. We have to judge men by God’s standards and therefore wish all men well.
Notice that sometimes this may mean that we have to hurt someone. We may be compelled to shoot down the enemy bomber by our love for our neighbour whom he is bombing. Again, we may be bound to punish a criminal to prevent him injuring others and indeed injuring himself by crime.
How far real affection will enter in this love of our neighbour as we have described it above will depend on how far we are approaching holiness. It is possible but it is not easy. We have to pray to God to help us to see our neighbour as he is and to love him for what he is.
* Jesus’ Love comes from the barrel of a gun. The media need to do their job. Offering a soapbox and microphone to Donahue, Terry, et al without a serious examination of their rhetoric and beliefs fails us all.
The idea that Obama et al., would rise up and lead, take the country in a purposeful direction, is nuts…Obama is a conciliator, no more.
Hate to rain on this little parade, but NO ONE KNOWS THE IDENTITY OF THE MURDERER OF DR. TILLMAN, and thus NO ONE KNOWS THE TRUE MOTIVATION. It’s very likely to be politically-motivated, but as yet there’s no responsible way to say that it definately was.
Thus, please don’t declare it to be terrorism.
When the full narrative is known (as opposed to guessed-at), then the charges can fly.
