When Brynwood Partners in 2006 took over the Stella D’oro factory in the Bronx, the Wall Street private equity firm had every reason to believe it would be easy to slash the wages, pensions, holidays and sick pay of the 136 bakery workers.
But the takeover brainos forgot one important fact: The workers are represented by a union, Local 50 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM).

Ben Nelson sure didn’t like the idea of a “public plan” when he spoke to CQ. In fact, he was going to form “a coalition of like-minded centrists” to oppose the inclusion of a public plan. But he seems curiously upset about a campaign to let Nebraskans know about that, according to his spokesperson, Jake Thompson:

Eric Massa of New York’s 29th District has been making the case for single payer healthcare. The advice he was given when he decided to run for congress was, “don’t do it.” As a first year congressman he’s been advised not to take a stand, especially on a hot button issue like healthcare.

Naomi Wolf, blogger and author of such New York Times bestsellers as The Beauty Myth, The End of America and Give Me Liberty, has added her name to the list of over 5000 people endorsing Alan Grayson’s campaign to audit the Federal Reserve.
Also endorsing Grayson’s efforts is OMB Watch, the nonprofit research and advocacy organization which seeks to increase transparency and accountability surrounding the Federal budget.

An anti-Sotomayor ad has hit the airwaves and it piqued my interest on who was really behind it.
It’s an odd ad, edited narrowly to portray a very stilted picture of Sotomayor — in short, it’s a classic political hit piece.
It’s from the Judicial Confirmation Network, headed by Gary Marx and Wendy Long.

While a number of institutional LGBT rights organizations (that have made significant progress at the state level) today cautioned against federal action, John Dean, appearing on Wednesday’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, makes the case that regardless of state decisions and citizens’ votes, marriage equality has become a national, federal civil rights issue, just as was Loving v. Virginia in 1967, in which the US Supreme Court ruled against interracial marriage bans.

Yesterday a draft of the new Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 was released. Jill Richardson has the details of what it does & doesn’t do:Gives the FDA mandatory recall authority. Requires all food producers to register with the FDA & pay a registration fee of $1000. It applies to both US and foreign producers and will fund the FDA’s activities.
