Late Night: In Memoriam–Memorial Day 2009 |
| By: Christy Hardin Smith Monday May 25, 2009 8:00 pm |
Memorial Day began as a way to honor the fallen from the Civil War:…no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. The day evolved to honor the lives, service and sacrifices of those having served in all of America’s wars and conflicts, and was officially declared a national holiday in 1971…

Reuters is reporting that Hank Greenberg has entered into agreements to sell all of his shares in AIG to another entity he controls, Starr International Company.
Nobody moves that many shares or that much money just for the heck of it. There is a mystery unfolding here.
FDL Movie Night Presents: Fresh |
| By: Lisa Derrick Monday May 25, 2009 5:00 pm |
Fresh, Ana Sophia Joanes’s documentary about the American food system and ways of farming is an eye-opening look at industrialized farming and at the importance and necessity of returning to more natural methods. The real stars of the movie are food revolutionaries like farmer Joel Salatin, a self-described “Christian-Libertarian-Environmentalist-Lunatic Farmer” who by simply rotating crops and growing naturally can produce $3,000 worth of crops and animals on an acre, versus his neighbors who factory-farm cows and only make $150 an acre.
Worrying About The Largely Unreal |
| By: Phoenix Woman Monday May 25, 2009 3:55 pm |
Americans freak out over ‘stranger danger’ when 86% of all killings and 70% to 90% of all sexual molestations of children are done by persons known to the victims. We’re being told to fear locking up Gitmo detainees in supermax facilities and to shrug our shoulders when women are killed by their stalkers and abusers, or when guns kill 30,000 of us a year. When will we learn to fear the right things?

| By: emptywheel Monday May 25, 2009 2:50 pm |
According to a story by Charlie Savage, if we want to hold the line on executive power, we had better hope Obama doesn’t pick Elena Kagan to be the next SCOTUS justice.
Sharing the Wealth: the Basis for a Fair Society |
| By: masaccio Monday May 25, 2009 1:30 pm |
Our financial betters will continue to preach about markets until we come up with a better organizing principle for our economic lives. Progressives might want to consider reading John Rawls. Societies that ignore fairness crumble from within.
Bombing Afghani Civilians is Not a Big Deal, Except When It is |
| By: Scarecrow Monday May 25, 2009 11:59 am |
Matthew Yglesias has a curious post on whether it’s justifiable to “accidentally” kill innocent Afghani citizens, which seems to turn on what our goals are. What is he talking about?

Mortgage Foreclosure: Here Come the “Deadbeats” |
| By: Jane Hamsher Monday May 25, 2009 9:30 am |
Rising unemployment is triggering a new wave of foreclosures:
Economists refer to the current surge of foreclosures as the third wave, distinct from the initial spike when speculators gave up propert of plunging real estate prices, and the secondary shock, when borrowers’ introductory interest rates expired and were reset higher.
“We’re right in the middle of this third wave, and it’s intensifying,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com.
