We’re only halfway through the weekend as I write this, but the RNC has a new bogosity that it and its TradMed friends are shoving down our throats:
As we told you earlier, the Obamas are spending a presumably romantic evening together with dinner and a Broadway show this evening in the Big Apple.
If the RNC are fans of Air Supply as well, perhaps they believe the Obamas are “Lost in Love” because flying off to New York while the economy is tanking is just not right they say.
“As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills,” RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said in an email this afternoon.
That’s not all from Gitcho. She then added a snitty, “Have a great Saturday evening — even if you’re not jetting off somewhere at taxpayer expense.”
All this over an event that had New Yorkers eagerly turning out to greet the First Couple.
Of course, none of the TradMed reporters dutifully passing along Gail Gitcho Gun’s talking points to us bothered to mention the fact that the Republicans have fought tooth and nail against help for GM and the other Detroit automakers. (Nor did they choose to mention something that would be much closer to actual scandal fodder — namely, the simmering controversy over the alleged new torture photos.) But the RNC’s arrogant dictation of these points — and the assiduousness with which the "respectable" press is passing them on — points to something that I feared might happen in the wake of the unnecessary and harmful non-apology apology that the Obama team (or at least Robert Gibbs) made on Sotomayor’s behalf over remarks that were not only perfectly innocent and innocuous, but were similar in tone and content to remarks uttered by former Supreme Court Justice (and rock-ribbed Republican) Sandra Day O’Connor.
Once the RNC figured out that Obama, like almost every other prominent Democrat, could be mau-maued into apologizing over an issue that didn’t rate an apology, they figured that they can get him to apologize over this, too. (By the way: Marcus Epstein, executive director of Tom Tancredo’s Team America PAC and Pat Buchanan’s group The American Cause, was recently busted for physically attacking a black woman, karate-chopping on the head while calling her a "n-gg-r". Now, isn’t it interesting that a) Tancredo and Buchanan have been among the loudest voices projecting GOP racism onto Judge Sotomayor, b) Epstein runs both men’s groups, and c) the TradMed hasn’t mentioned any of this in the context of their transmitting the GOP’s anti-Sotomayor smears?)
Meanwhile, Michael Steele sez that the Republicans are "through apologizing". Except, of course, to Rush Limbaugh.

I don’t think the O’Connor link is similar in tone and content to the Sotomayor quote. I get that people here don’t have a problem with the quote, but misrepresenting and/or spinning what Sotomayor said seems to belie that.
I didn’t hear her whining about Shrub’s trips to Crawford to clear brush. While the taxpayers were paying for 2 wars, the scam known as health care and the salaries of a government in a ditch.
Oh, look, a bright shiny object.
This is from the last entry to my scandals list on Bush:
Look at the numbers. Bush made hundreds of non-essential trips. He would often fly down to Crawford in Air Force One for a weekend. He was flying around the country during Katrina. I am very far from being an Obama supporter but this is typical Republican sniveling about Democrats for something that they did all the time.
Begrudging the Obamas taking a weekend night off while ignoring GWB spending a quarter of his time on vacation is the height of ludicrousness.
GWB on vacation and eating birthday cake with McShame while NOLA was underwater and Rummy was saying FU to America, a high bar you guys set there.
Wonderfully put.
I have read the “better” quote in context and it still sounds like a klunker to me. But, let the first person who hasn’t said something stupid from time to time step forward.
I think it is best not to defend or ignore it, but simply to admit it was an isolated dumbass remark and so what?
From reading the link above not only did he do this, he did it with her husband standing next to her!
This is absolutely incredible.
And as much time as I spend on the internets, I’m amazed this is the first time I’ve read about it.
And why no mention of this on MSNBC where Pat Buchanan (who I’m convinced doubles as “Bay” to make more cash) is ever present?
Let some “lefty” be affiliated with a guy who karate chopped someone in the head on the street; we’d never hear the end of it.
All that glitters… .
Here is a little more detail:

It is an outrageous act – don’t know exactly when it happened – but I do want to hear his explanation as to why he did it. Don’t hold your breath for the MSM to widely report it. They have other important stuff – like the Prez going to NY (how dare he) and Angelina’s new tattoo.
I assume Scarecrow would like the quote to mean “Latinas might have some unique experience worth bringing to the Supreme Court,” because that’s how Scarecrow represents the quote. I assume Phoenix Woman would like the quote to say something similar to what O’Connor said, since that’s how she represents it. In both cases, the only way the quote could come close to meaning what they want it to mean is with a clarification, which is what we got uyesterday. I really don’t see what the problem is.
Mornin’ Phoenix Woman and Firedogs,
drivin’ by, busy family week end.
Broadway Show while disaster looms ? at taxpayer’s expense you say
did the First Lady wear Pappagallos ??
Damn, I missed that.
Here I was thinking I was all current on the important issues, and that slipped through the cracks.
Buchanon and Tancredo should have no difficulty replacing Epstein. KKK is on speed dial at the office.
You really MUST stay current on the latest bling and stuff. You might miss an exciting article regarding Michelle’s arms ! :)
Nothing from the AP on Epstein? I’ll bet Olbermann will report it on Monday. If this guy was a Democrat, the AP would be all over this story. Is it legal to mention AP?
No. Kidding.
It shows both the laziness of the TradMed and their utter subservience to the Republican Party. There’s a reason I refer to them as “the GOP/Media Complex”.
Heh!
Exactly. The GOP/Media Complex in action.
Well, yes, so long as you remember that “AP” stands for “Apathetic Press.” Don’t they just phone it in these days?
