This is how the GOP moves to the left and gets away from Cheney: set up irrelevants like Rush, Hannity, Newt, etc. as “The Voices of the Party,” then the electeds can come out publicly condemning their extremism in a gambit to look good. Sad, really.

The suggestion in The Early Morning Swim below that Conyers will be another Rushbo basher who crawls back to The Fat One begging for forgiveness is probably wrong. I have a feeling that the Congressional leaders are finally realizing that standing up to the right-wing nuts like Limpbaugh is a good thing, and that groveling before him just shows how weak they are.

I think Powell was the first to challenge the crazy wingers, and that more and more Republican leaders are starting to realize that bending to the will of the rabid 25% of their base is not necessarily a winning strategy!

If it’s all theater, then Cornyn is a bigger political fool than we have imagined.

Yes, he probably is encouraging it to raise campaign money while at the same time trying to “stick to the high ground”.

Problem is, nobody is fooled anymore. Trying to leverage the Sotomayor confirmation into campaign cash is as desperate as trying to appear to be on the high ground.

Cornyn is saying in public what he thinks voters want to hear while privately he’s encouraging Rush and the other ideological surrogates to let loose with everything they have.

The more “establishment” Republicans can be seen to be critical of hate speech and calling for an end to trashing Judge Sotomayor the more they can masquerade as moderate members of a political party which the GOP ceased to be years ago.

This is all theater.

The Righty Commenters already don’t like him. The Righty front pagers ignore a topic they know their readers would like?
The Righty Front pagers are either uninformed (not likely) about Cornyn or they are bought.
The GOP seems to be controlling the message at the cost of Readers who know better.
Only readers who only get their news from Righty sources are going to fall for this, hmmm we should profile Righty Commentors how long do they stay before they catch on?
I’m betting this is not the first time a Special GOPer has been protected from the Righty Commenters.
