I know this is a big come down from the crazy train that is "Rush Limbaugh is Jesus" (a matter of rare debate) but still this is pretty damned crazy:
BENNETT: Summa Cum Laude, I don’t think you get on affirmative action. I don’t know what her major was, but Summa Cum Laude’s a pretty big deal.
BARNES: I guess it is, but you know, there’s some schools and maybe Princeton’s not one of them, where if you don’t get Summa Cum Laude then or some kind of Cum Laude, you then, you’re a D+ student.
Yeah, Summa Cum Laude is so easy to obtain at any university.
Barnes, is a true lover of the thematic proclamation that George W. Bush is a "rebel", the genetic super result of Yale super-intellect Poppy Bush and Smith College strongman Barbara Bush — Fred’s love can be seen in the shots of Bush he favors. Which makes me pretty sure that the latter half of Cum Laude distracts from Fred’s actual Bush-inspired obsessions.
And meanwhile, about that Moonie Times declaration that Sotomayor get’s reversed "a lot" — meet Sammy "empathy is alright with me" Alito’s 100% reversal rate.

Scalia suck-up sammy with his 2 cases reviewed/ both reversed by the supremes is of course a brilliant jurist.
The nightly take-downs of the days bullshit, say any stupid stuff republican talking points by Keith and Rachael has been fun to watch. To bad morning JOkE and tweety can’t be bothered to watch them.
Thanks for the post, Attaturk.
Good morning all.
On Tuesday night, former Bush adviser Karl Rove said that despite her stellar academic credentials, Sotomayor was “not necessarily” smart. “I know lots of stupid people who went to Ivy League schools,” said Rove.
Yeah: W graduated from Yale summa cum lunk
Yeah, Summa Cum Laude is so easy to obtain at any university.
uh-huh.
And for a couple of Million, a C- is available from Yale.
on edit: ok – maybe it was a C+. By all means, let’s give George The
DoltierIn an absolute best-case-scenario, georgie night have, at one time and before the Sloth truly set in, have tested out as a truly mediocre student.
Attaboy, American voters! (and thank you Ted Olsen)
Someone should ask Mr POS Barnes exactly WHICH uni’s hand out “cum laudes” like tic-tacs. Because mine sure as heck didn’t. And I went to a low-key State school.
Ass Hat.
FunnyWheelieDiva
who just happened to graduate s.c.l.
oops – messed up the post and edit too.
Sleep is beginning to sound like a decent option….
Night, Jayt.
See ya later today!

Good morning all, I’ve started brewing coffee, but kept out the pitcher of Rusty Nails for Sunny and all who want one. (if anyone’s curious, Drambuie doesn’t taste completely wretched in coffee)
Good morning Attaturk. I’m still gobsmacked by that Rush=Jesus thing. Shouldn’t there be a lightning bolt sometime soon? And where did Barnes graduate from? (or what was he smoking) when he figured some schools hand out SCL like tic-tacs. I wonder if we’re seeing the wingnut equivalent of BDS (Bush derangement syndrome). Just with more stupidity.
One of the top Republicans in the Senate, John Cornyn, is repudiating recent comments by Rush Limbaugh and Newt Gingrich which claimed that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a racist.
Cornyn, the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, told NPR’s “All Things Considered”:
“I think it’s terrible… This is not the kind of tone any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advise and consent.”
Raven, thank you for the good-ish news. I know I shouldn’t hope that this is a sign of sanity from Senate Republicans, but still I hope.
(okay, my cynical side says “Wait ’til Daddy Rush hears about this, and watch how fast Cornyn backtracks.”)
That’s what I want to see!
Good morning, pups. It’s Bobo and Krugman today. Bobo addresses “The Empathy Issue” and says the crucial question in evaluating Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court justice is not whether, but how, she relies on empathy or emotion in rendering decisions. He invokes Burke and Hayek, so you’re pretty much guaranteed that he’s drooling drivel. Prof. Krugman looks at “The Big Inflation Scare” and has a question: Does the big inflation scare make any sense? Basically, no. And he suspects that the scare is at least partly about politics rather than economics.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got Thomas’ English muffins with your favorite jam. I was up WAAAAY too late last night, talking with a friend in Hawaii, so I need another cup of tea to get my heart started. Have a great day.
What school did Barnes go to? Should I look in Wikipedia or Dickipedia?
I can’t believe he said that. Buit i guess I shouldn’t be surprised.
(It’s U VA)
Morning. Is any dem out there saying ‘This is nonsense, she’s a brilliant jurist’? Mocking is good, but then follow up with a rebuttal.
Mind you, I don’t feel like I know enough yet to be an avid supporter of Sotomayor’s but her intelligence seems obvious.
Summa cum laude requires a 3.7 grade point average or above, for a normal 120-140 semester hours attempted for a bachelor’s degree. Given the fact that most colleges include a few bad instructors/professors whose tests have nothing to do with their lectures, who care more about research than teaching, who have eccentric personal theories that no one can get A’s in their course, and that late teen kids are subject to illness and a host of distractions, I never understood how anyone managed to do it. They have to have a dedication that I don’t understand.
I don’t think the base to whom the Republicans must appeal knows anything about a semester hour, a grade point average, or a degree.
Bobo is a stupid. “Empathy” was something Obama said. Not her. So if somebody really wants to ask about that, they have to ask IF she takes that into account, dummy. Otherwise, you’d just be, as the lawyers say, assuming facts not in evidence. Gotta, as the lawyers say, lay a foundation for the question. BooBoo.
Obama reassuring liberals about Roe vs Wade.

So that’s good.
Me too. I went to a school steeped in an illustrious tradition of mediocrity. And honors were not handed out like tic-tacs. But they do at the Ivies? Did she get a perfect attendance award? Total asshat Barnes is.
A little quick googling reveals that there tends to be concern over grade inflation at Ivy League schools from time to time. A 1988 NYT article about honors at Yale said that at the time roughly 50% of graduates received Cum Laude honors. But only 10% received Summa Cum Laude. So, the problem (if there is one) is not with the honors themselves, but more with “grade inflation”. Of course, to suggest that C- students are Summa Cum Laude is idiotic. But, when we consider the source and all becomes clear.
Ooops. 43% of the 2008 graduating class at PU received honors of some sort. That is pretty high, no? Don’t know if it was like that in Sonia’s day. But still. Point is she did it. To hear these people talk, the only reason she got in was AA. Not a way to get honors.
http://www.princeton.edu/main/…../25/15Q25/
True. To me the point is that she met whatever standard there was. She didn’t invent that standard. It sure as hell wasn’t D-.
Oh yeah. Grounhog Day – again – the City Beautiful. 71 and clear. Going up to the 80’s this afternoon with thunderstorms. Like yesterday and the day before that and the day before that and………………..
Our Magics didn’t close out the Cleveland LeBrons last night. Oh well, have to do it at home on Saturday.
BL, see #19. There’s a huge difference between Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude, but there both “honors of some sort”.
Republicans don’t understand the higher levels of education because they’ve never been there. See? I suppose her intellect is in the eye of the beholder because Sotomayor is also the one who saved Major League Baseball back in 1995…

She’s a Yankees fan. LOL To Boston fans, she could very well be the stupidest person on the planet! ;-)
Per bio at wiki, appears Rove was a professional drop-out (serially enrolling then dropping out during the years he had draft vulnerability).
For tacky resume plumping, there’s this: Barnes considered applying to West Point before enrolling at U VA, where he obtained an undergrad degree in history. Perhaps he’s too modest to disclose his U VA honors. He did have a mid-career media fellowship for a year of independent study at harvard. No Harvard degree of any flavor.
Quite the folks to be attacking academic distinctions earned by others.
Sarah Palin went to how many colleges? Six last I knew. Her major? Journalism, but as of right now, she’s having someone else write her life’s story. LOL! She’s a typical lazy lying republican lump on a log.
MoJoke is (mildly) criticizing the comments but not from the standpoint that they’re ridiculous. Noooo, his only concern is that it hurts the repubs chances in future elections.
Now MoJoke compares Rush to Jon Stewart. Both are entertainers giving their listeners what they want to hear. Not a good comparison, methinks.
Right. I understand. I’m just saying it was a higher percentage than expected. To me it’s just scuilous of Barnes. He has no clue what her grades were so he should just STFU. Her academic accompishments are impressive. If this is the best they can do……………….. Impressive or not. Sotomayor or Alito or anybody,. I don’t think the academics are all that important anyway. Their recrds as lawyers and judges (if they were one) much, much more important. Although personal stuff can be a factor – see Claence Thomas – but academics? Most of these people come from elite schools. It’s just no big deal. Barnes is beyond reaching here.
…and N.Korea fires another missile. Will someone please bring that maniac some chocolates. Send Richardson.
You know, when you think about it, the Swift Boat rats did a pretty good job of degrading combat awards. They made it sound like any lieutenant j.g. could write himself up for a medal.
Morning all.
For the rethugs the big award one got in college was called a defferment.
Just to clarify things: Sotomayor didn’t just graduate summa,
she won the f*cking Pyne Prize,
which is given to the best one or two seniors at Princeton.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
And Barnes’ parents wasted one when they conceived him.
Nice one. (You’re comment that is.)
IRT, AA. IF Sotomayor got into Princeton due to AA, then that’s a perfect argument about the benefits of AA. She is a brilliant woman who may not have gotten the chance to excel if Pat Buchanon et al were writing the rules.
It’s been reported that the same persons behind the Swift Boat smear campaign are the ones churing out the anti-Sotomayor talking points.
Anyone available for a bit of investigative reporting on the culprits? Who might be funding them?
My ex-husband (may he RIP) used to say only idiots and morons had college degrees.
I had one; he didn’t. One of the many reasons he’s my ex.
Kid would’ve made a great Republican, if he hadn’t died young due to not taking care of himself (fatal heart attack at 52).
From the article you quote:
(My bold)
Hardly a D+ student.
Christy has a post up on this (yesterday):
SCOTUS: Start Yer Ad War Engines, The GOP’s Swift Boat PR Team Is Back In Action
That was meant for ghostof911 at #36…
They did a great job of trashing Viet Nam vets in general.
Dude, Babs only attended Smith for a year and then dropped out to marry Poppy. I’ve never done the math, but I’ve always wondered if Shrub was an early bun in the oven.
So don’t be thrusting her off as a “distinguished alumna” or anything. She’s only a 1 year Smithie before being a drop-out. So there. *g*
Video of the Bennett/Barnes exchange…
Is this true? Did Barnes really say that? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised — probably 99% of FOX viewers have never even heard of “Summa Cum Laude” before.
But don’t they ever get embarrassed, saying such stupid things? Do they never leave The Beltway?
That is true! I recall when Nancy Reagan and Babs were the wives of running mates in 1980, Nancy was the college grad.
Keep talking, right-wingnuts.
Hate-talk your selves into political oblivion.
