Marcy Wheeler’s acceptance speech at the Hillman Awards:
About a month and a half ago, I spent four days trying to get someone to pay attention to those two numbers — 183 and 83. Those are the numbers, that we just heard, of the times our government waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah.
She did get people to pay attention, and a story that would have otherwise gone unreported made its way to the front page of the New York Times.
We’re about $4,000 away from the $100,000 mark with the Marcy Wheeler fund. We’d love to hit that goal in the next few days so that Marcy can continue to have the financial support and resources she needs to do her important work.
If you are looking for a good way to show your appreciation for her incredible dedication and accomplishments, you can donate on this page.
Congratulations, Marcy. It’s an honor to be both your friend and your biggest fan.

Congrats Marcy!
The first of many.
Congratulations, Marcy & FDL.
Congratulations, Marcy.
Way Cool!! Keep up the stellar work Marcy..
felicitations, Marcy!
Present at the creation of a new media paradigm, etc.
Thank you, Marcy, for your continued excellent work.
And thanks, Jane, for your leadership.
Thanks, Jane. Congratulations Marcy!
Well done, Marcy.
Yay Marcy!
Marcy!! Look at the stenographers taking notice….
Cool!
Brava Marcy!
The kind of strong, blunt woman that makes the mediocre elitist white males *cough* Taylor, Rush, Newt *cough* quake in their boots.
Just had a thought a tad more last thread…a commenter mentioned the Alumni group Alito was in that tried to block women and minorities from Princeton. Wonder if that “colored” Obama’s nay vote on Alito?
The more the rightwing screeds against Sotomayor, the more the racist tenor of the Alito-types is open to exposure. Maybe he can get his wife to cry on cue again.
Somewhat chilling to hear Marcy talk of establishing a network that can withstand the loss of a “cog” (more like an axle or pivot); but it made me think that it is fitting that the blogging community is made possible by the Internet, which itself was designed to withstand damage, so that messages would get through even if parts of them had to go around the world the other way, if they came out of order, late, early, or slightly dinged up.
Congratulations to Marcy, and thanks to FDL for putting up the acceptance speech.
Is there a transcript of the speech? For those of us who may have hearing difficulties (one of the banes of growing older)….
It’s thrilling to see this in video, even if I can’t make out all the words. (wink!)
I’ve felt privileged numerous times to be a part of this blog, to be a reader of Marcy’s work and a participant in the discussion. I lurk a lot, but RARELY miss a post and Marcy has stunned me repeatedly with her keen eye, way with words and brilliant analysis.
I’m proud to be an FDL’er and SO BIG congrats to our own Marcy Wheeler. She’s been the bright light of hope since the nightmare of the Bu$h regime and it’s a very good thing to see her honored like this.
Would that this recognition would translate into $$$ for her and her family.
Thanks, Marcy, Jane and every one else here.

I couldn’t decide what to get myself for my birthday, and suddenly it came to me! C-note in the tip jar from yours truely…
Many thanks to Jane, Marcy, all the bloggers here and this great group of firepups; I consider all y’all friends of mine!
Good to see that Marcy is being heard!!
Happy Birthday, WDD. And many more.
Marcy is special and I applaud her hard work. Thanks, EW.
Marcy,
Thanks for being a leader in the reality-based analysts community, the new fourth estate.
Jane, thanks for your hard work and vision for FDL.
Mr. EW, thanks for supporting Mrs. EW in her gift and for the opportunities for all of us to be a part of her team.
bmaz, thanks for being such a strong contributor and team member to the blog.
(Did I hear the name McIntosh?)
No way Jane!
I’m her biggest fan!
Are not!
Am too!

Well done, Marcy. I think the comparison to Argentina was right on point. It will become more obvious once “they” shut down the internet and the US Dollar collapses. When the people are told that the Internet enabled the Next terror attack, “they” will employ “their” media to compel the people to agree to restrict its use, “to keep us safe.”
heya doodle – Happy, happy… !!
did Jane shoot this vid with the infamous flip-camera?
Many, many thanks to Jane for giving us a place where ordinary people could be a part of something bigger than the sum of us. A place where the truth was/is still the guiding principal and where we could feel that even ‘little people’ could stand united against the evil being done ‘In Our Name’.
Many, many thanks to Marcy for teaching all of us that our voices/opinions count and for making difficult/confusing subjects understandable to all education levels.. And, to ALL who work behind the scenes and ALL posters and commenters, Thank-you for easing the fear, the shame and for showing ME that even I can make a difference… Bless all of you and I am so very proud to be part of this amazing place…Love to all of you..:)
I don’t think I’ve ever heard as interesting an acceptance speech than this one.
Yay Marcy!
Standing on a chair clapping….. congrats and so glad you are getting the recognition you deserve….
BTW TheraP….. I have small speakers that I can just hook up to my laptop and hear what can be too low a volume. Bought it somewhere for under $10.
just wondering – do you arrange to have all of your birthdays fall on weekends? *g*
Heh. It was Wednesday so I get to celebrate last weekend and this weekend!
Just want to say how much I enjoy having Marcy lead the way through the weeds.
It takes my breath away that real journalism is still practiced by brave folks such as Marcy. I’m glad some kind stranger steered me over here a couple of years ago. The quest for truth here has kept me sane. Thanks FDL, and congratulations Marcy!!!
Congratters, Marcy!
and standing on chair applauding Katymine’s standing on chair applaiuding! (((Katymine!)))
Congrats Marcy, just adding my kudos to the crowds…
Marcy’s acceptance speech for this well-deserved award is yet another example of the plight of today’s journalism. In trying to be a profit center for infotainment, journalism has lost its way, aborted its roots, abandoned its core value as the Fourth Estate.
How many of the journalists whose names cross our screens today actually grok the significance of the journalistic past of only a few decades ago, let alone see the parallels between today’s current events and those which motivated earlier journalists to report at great personal cost?
We need Marcy, and we need many, many more like her. We also need to ensure they receive rewards for reporting which makes a real difference to our democracy — but we could start with simply covering the real costs to do this kind of reporting.
I think many of us in the FDL community who remember the Libby trial and Marcy’s live coverage appreciate what it took to cover the story. But I think we’re also not looking far enough down the road; the work Marcy has done and continues to do is a bread crumb trail to something much, much larger, and she’s going to need more resources for that as-yet formless event or events ahead. Personally I envision hearings at a minimum and trials at best, and Marcy should be there. Please help if you can and fund the exploration of history as it unfolds at Marcy’s keyboard. It’s got to be worth the price of a couple lattes, yes?
Congrats Marcy.
It is wonderful to see recognition granted where recognition is due, however belatedly. BZ EW
Good on ya, Marcy, you sure as hell deserve it!
I’d like to echo Rayne’s words. It won’t get better unless we all dig a little deeper. I’m genuinely touched by the dedication and determination of Marcy, Jane, and all who contribute here. It won’t get done without all of us, and we couldn’t have better examples to follow.
A Hillman is a remarkable accomplishment and well-deserved, Marcy. I hope you take a minute to reflect on it. I feel it won’t be your last.
Thanks Jane.
Brava Marcy!
Thank you Marcy. And also Jane for making this community possible.
Well deserved! Yay Marcy and Jane.
Thanks, Marcy. You brighten and enlighten my day, every day. I would like to have seen Jane Mayer’s acceptance speech as well.
Thanks Jane and Firedoglake. Congratulations Marcy!
Boy am I glad that I found this site and Greenwald’s site. The reporting here and there gives me hope that one day we will reclaim our free press.
Marcy, you done us proud.
