Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.
Ah, of course. Judge Sotomayor can’t be trusted to do her job professionally and competently because she gets the PMS, you know, like women do. Am I right, guys? Yeah, you know what I’m talking about, nudge nudge wink wink ex-wife joke.
Liddy isn’t the first conservative to use this repulsive argument against a woman seeking a position of power, and I’m sure he won’t be the last. But the thing is, every time some misogynist asshole uses this argument, it’s not just a slur against the woman in his crosshairs, it’s a slur against every woman between menarche and menopause.
Liddy and all his sexist predecessors are actually claiming, against millennia of evidence to the contrary, that women can’t be trusted in any position of responsibility because for a few days every month, the PMS makes them so mean and irrational that they forget all their knowledge, all their experience, and make decisions based solely on rage. And that it’s only a matter of time before this breakdown of mental discipline leads to unthinkable disaster.
In other words, the right-wing’s PMS Woman caricature sounds just like the GOP every single day.

Eli!
Dosido!
I am broken-hearted that I could not find a way to work the word “wereconservative” into this post…
All the reptiles coming out from underneath their rocks are sure getting a lot of air time. David Shuster gave Tom Tancretin a chance to apologize for his KKK remark, but instead he chose to dig deeper.
I wonder how all this Liddy stuff plays with Judge O’Connor and Judge Ginsburg (sp?)
Maybe Tancredo should have explained that the KKKomparison was meant as a compliment.
Sorry, but fuck G Gordon Liddy. He’s a felon. Who the hell except for some brain dead republic listenes to him anyway.
Is/was Liddy a Sarah Palin supporter?
You mean like Liddy is the prototypical wereconservative baying at the moon over a woman’s cycle.
And Eli, I’m pretty sure postmenopausal woman will be offended as well.
Yep, it’s true. This crone bases all her decisions on rage.
Hey too bad our founding fathers didn’t keep the language they borrowed from the Iroquois Nation about the grandmother lodge. They knew their stuff and were always consulted for their organizational memory of what works and what doesn’t. Oh well.
Truly amazing. And wrong – if she hits menopause she may put some attorney over her knee and spank him. These wingers have really crossed the line and are beginning (?) to sound absolutely nuts.
No argument here.
I agree with scarecrow that the WH concession that Sototmayor used a poor choice of words was extremely lame. I notice that her horrible confession of racism is almost always misquoted in the incompetent safe and sane and very responsible and expert big media. The crucial word ‘hope’ is left out, which clearly identifies her as discussing an aspriation.
Has anyone noticed any stories that actually discuss Sotomayor’s record? The mainstream press is showing its complete uselessness and triviality by covering the stupid wingnut noise machine, and not covering the substance at all.
That the WH may fail to get this to hearings is a valid fear given the Dems’ doofus history. Not buckling, and going to hearings is key, because I think Sotomayor will give an excellent performance, and humiliate the wingnuts. So, if the loons want to drum up public interest, that is fine with me.
I would prefer some one not so centrist, and who has a record indicating greater likelihod of taking on the original intentions nonsense. I have read the Obama, in his purported 3-D chess wisdom, thinks that extensive real world judicial experience is key. Obama is a law prof and I am not even a lawyer, so maybe he is right.
Best would be some one with Sotomayor’s real world courtroom experience who is ready to do heavy duty battle with fallacies currently influential on the court. But maybe such a person does not exist.
At this point, I think only the 20% dead-enders are not offended.
Man I’m sick of these people.
I think they do; Obama just doesn’t want anything to do with them.
I would imagine that a great many Republican women will be very offended. This is a direct slam at ALL women.
Fortunately for the Republicans, tbsa is probably correct – there’s a good chance that more liberals have seen or heard this quote than conservatives.
Now that’s what I’m talking about!
Isn’t it amazing how the GOP framing on this is not only the dominant framing, but this is the dominant story today? Everything else has been shoved off to one side, if it was mentioned at all.
Where’s Liz Cheney, Sarah Palin, Lynn Cheney, Bay Pukecannon, Buffy Dole, Andrea Greenspan…
This is a perfect opening. Wanna bet Palin will piper in?
Aside from the blogosphere, not really. The Trad Med’s ‘reporting’ is pretty much whatever GOP talking points the RNC’s blast-emailed them that morning.
Maybe they’ll argue that conservative women are not so susceptible to the ravages of PMS, on account of their superior mental discipline and powerful sense of personal accountability.
I just watched a few clips. I think some of the jackassity and turditude of the attacks is so extreme that the teevee talkers can’t help but respond as if they were presonally insulted.
I just saw some lame NYT “reporter” who wrote a stupid gossip piece on a teevee clip. Some lady teevee news host objected to (obvious) sexism of bringing this temerment junk up. With Scalia on the court, any supposed termperment issue is lame. Dude says to her “your type” might object. She took offense, and I think rightly so. I’m not saying that most of these hosts are doing a good job, they are still not good newspeople. But, the ones who remain close to normal are starting to react in a personally offended way. I probably would too.
Or that many conservative womenfolk have learned to control their PMS out of fear of correction by their righteous Christian husbands.
Yep, hard to think of anything less pertinent than a Liddy opinion.
Lady parts!
The dissonance required for a woman to call herself a republican in the first place makes me wonder if you are at all correct.
As Eli alludes in the last sentence of his post, PMS might explain a lot of behavior by Republicans. Boehner’s crying jags, for instance.
Ha ha. Remember when questioning her qualifications because she like blackk beans and rice was outgrageous? Ahh… good times back then.
How long to the hearings? I don’t see how this keeps up. Newtie said her confirmation would be the end of the American legal tradition, or start a new Civil War or some similar very reasonable thing today.
I’m very concerned that she might start rounding up white people and lynching them.
A boehner with PMS… Isn’t that an oxymoron?

“…Newt Gingrich has responded to Sen. Cornyn’s call to basically shut the hell up by turning the volume way up on the Sotomayor as anti-American racist freak by invoking the Civil War, civil rights and arguing that American civilization itself may be at stake if her brand of ‘racism’ isn’t defeated.”

Will David Gregory ask Mitch McConnell to reject and denounce Liddy’s statements on Meet the Press this Sunday?
Based on some of my female hardcore conservative relatives, they could give Liddy lessons about holding their hands over a lit match. “You think that’s something? Try passing a bowling ball, and then we’ll talk. And wash out your mouth with soap before you come to the dinner table.”
LMAO
David Gregory, republic mouth piece of Press The Meet would have to disconnect his lips from their hind ends first. The chance of that happening are slim to none.
I suppose we can’t completely rule out some sort of Divine Intervention transforming Gregory into a competent journalist. Short of that, I don’t see it happening.
…And to think we trust women to raise children!
Didn’t you get the memo, that’s light duty work.
Only because men are too lazy and self-serving. Whoops, I didn’t mean to type that out loud…
yeah, not worth the pay.
This crap is going to blow up in their faces during hearings. I watched the clip of Sotomayor’s discussion that included her horrible racist quote. I think she will wipe the floor with these fools.
By that time, at this rate, people will watching to see whether she is the antichrist. They will see an extremely articulate and thuoughtful centrist judge.
I think most gop women see the primate chest thumping for what it is.
Greetings all! We have warmth for a change in the Inland Northwest.
ABC News did a better job than normal tonight. Unlike last night, they didn’t just show the abbreviated clip of what Sotomayor said and they showed Alito saying pretty much the same thing in his confirmation hearing. I think those complaining to the news media about just passing on Republican talking points are starting to have an impact.
You shouldn’t have typed that. No supreme court for you!
What I think is really disturbing is that all these bullies have are bully tactics. It wouldn’t matter if Obama nominated Judge Roy Bean, famous hangin’ judge. They are simply trying to see if they still have the power to blow things up with their mouths. (wait, that didn’t come out right.)
I could be completely off base here but I honestly doubt many people are buying this crap. It’s so far out there, especially since bushco gave us scalito and roberts.
Alas, my SCOTUS nomination was kind of a long-shot anyway.
I don’t think many voters pay attention to the supreme court generally. But surely some have noticed that Bush 41 appointed Sotomayor to the position she has now???
That really puts the lie to the wingnut games.
OK, where do we turn up with the rotten eggs?
WTF is WRONG with men like this? Other than diarrhea of the mouth, obviously. Baby Jeebus on Toast!
ASSHAT, ASSHAT, ASSHAT!!!
Funny Wheelie Diva
and I thought “some colleges hand out ‘cum laude’ honors like tic-tacs” was bad…
you know what I don’t see in Liddy’s wiki?
That he has ever been married.
So my Palin-Bachman dream ticket will never get out of the strating blocks, but not for the reasons I would have imagined. Thank you G. Gordon Liddy, you are a great American patriot who speaks only the truth. Diogenes can end his search right now!
I think he is, actually. A friend of mine told me about when some reporter visited him at his home, and noticed guns all over the place. The reporter asked him about it, since as a convicted felon he’s not allowed to own any.
Liddy said something like, “They’re my wife’s guns. She just happens to keep some of them on my side of the bed.”
I think politics played a big part in Obama’s choice. For a variety of reasons it will be problematic for the GOP to oppose Sotomayor. Note that nearly all the really harsh criticism is coming from NON-officeholders.
Just hope we don’t end up getting burned by a Souter replacement who turns out to be a stealth conservative. I found this article in Slate a trifle disturbing.
I wonder why???? hhhuumm
Diogenes can end his search right now!
well, there *was* that little Watergate kerfuffle….
I’m with you. These fools are just making asses of themselves. Except for Newt. This is a fundraiser for him.
Liddy said something like, “They’re my wife’s guns. She just happens to keep some of them on my side of the bed.”
straw-wife?
Close… inflatable. Risky thing for him to do when they can be ruined by a tiny prick.
Frances Ann Purcell, Liddy spouse, acc. to the google search I just did. married in 1957.
pms doesn’t affect sarah palin. she just gets into a helocopter and shoots some wolves
Well anyone who is left of Rush, Liddy, Tancredo, etc. can still be conservative, that’s for sure. It’s a definite possibility. And Obama doesn’t strike me as super liberal.
I’ve had to tell more than a few of the pukes I work with that H.W. appointed her in the first place. It’s definitely something they don’t want out there.
Liddy has a permanent hard on for violence. What does that make him?
Eli dear, we refer to that, um, sensitivity the men of the GOP display by a different name.
It’s not PMS.
It’s UMS.
Ugly Mood Swings.
And in Liddy’s case, we call it FMS — Fugly Mood Swings.
UMS also has no predictable cycle; it’s a chronic congenital affliction.
Commenters at the WaPo deflect that chronology by pointing out that her “racist comment” was in 2001, so how was GHWB to know? She was a secret racist!
Besides, Daniel Patrick Moynihan made GHWB appoint her, anyway.
difficult to have around the house. :)
It doesn’t apply to them at all, really – their ugliness is pretty much a steady-state condition.
That’s cold.
therefore, I heartily approve.
You know what Judge Sotomayor’s problem is. She is a woman and is not white. She is strong. She is competent. She is all the things that scare little boys who are not yet reconciled to their defeat to a strong, competent black man. Their world has fallen in on them. They are fools.
Oh my! Where’s the empathy???
So they are goint to try to paint Mr. Benign Neglect Moynahan as a reverse white-man hating racist? That will be neat trick.
Most of Moynahan’s career was before my time, or when I was a kid, so I don’t his history in detail. I guess he wasn’t that bad at the beginning, but I remember him as being a DLC type bitter white man most of the time.
She is all the things that scare little boys who are not yet reconciled to their defeat to a strong, competent black man.
I assume that you’re not referring to Clarence Thomas?
The thing is, I don’t know if liberals should like her either…because of her record, not because of these juvenile identity slurs that the likes of Liddy like to throw around.
From clips I have seen, she is also very centrist, extremely articulate, and thoughtful, and quick on her feet.
I think that the wingnuts are forgetting a little detail. If they whip up the expectation that she is some kind of modern day Count Dracula who is going to hang white men on pikes in the street, what will most people think after they watch her at the hearings?
They will think why were these hateful dingbats hating on this very smart very competent person? I am very confident that she will make a very good impression at the hearings.
So, one possibility is that if they cannot derail the hearings, the wingnuts will just hang it up soon, unless they are so deranged that they really believe the nonsense they spout.
Moynahan….I remember him as being a DLC type bitter white man most of the time.
heyheyhey…. according to Orrin Hatch, Pat was willing to do a full trade-off of votes on judicial appointments.
And ok, so that’s illegal, and the most egregious possible violation of duty to the SJC. But Pat’s dead, so wtf?
Hatch, on the other hand……
You make a great point, and I agree with you. However, we aren’t sitting around slinging ridiculously false accusations at her.
Yes, what about her record? That would be nice to know about. What do you hear about it in the asswipe big media: nothing.
SCOTS blog is writing a series of posts on her opinions, but some of it is written in ‘Lawyer’ so I am not sure what to make of some of the posts.
That’s the problem. I want someone I know is a liberal, not someone Obama says is one.
Is it likely that Soto would vote to overturn Roe v Wade?
Jonathan Turley and Dahlia Lithwick both say that she does not have a particularly liberal record. She very mainstream, slightly center-left judge who has great respect for precedent and believes in careful, deliberate methodical approach to change.
Once bitten, twice shy?
Yes, the noise is drowning any real discussion out.
You are a reverse sexist.
Right. We don’t need “centrists” to counter the right-wing extremism on the court. We need solid liberals for all future vacancies. The court that selected Dubya Bush was stacked hard right. After Dubya got Alito and Roberts, it’s far worse.
Lol. right with ya on that one. Let the confirmation hearings begin.
All this noise is making Big John real nervous like.
And wtf are these magical powers of persuasion that Roberts is supposed to possess?
My most favorite Moynihan memories are when I lived on Capitol Hill, around the corner from him, and he would wander into my house — or the homes of neighbors — and start asking why the furniture had been rearranged, sure he was in his own home.
We all had the Capitol Police on speed-dial, and wow were they fast. They always got him home safely, but I wondered how he did his job. This was in the eighties.
John or Pat?
Oh, I think it does apply; the swings are between batches of new talking points.
We’ve seen at least four swings already since she was named on Monday:
- OMG! She’s a liberal!!
- OMG! She’s not smart like an autobot conservative!
- OMG! She’s not white!!!
- OMG! She’s a SHE!!!!
Can hardly wait to see how the Wurlitzer will whip the next batch of UMS into a frenzy on Monday…
Yeah, their battle cry was “remember the Bakke Decision!!!”
1981 was when he was a guest at my high school’s 50th anniversary (my dad went there as well). He got *spectacularly* drunk.
Fair enough, but their *mood* doesn’t change…
…Big John…
demand
strict proof, err, personal references….fuck it – we’ll go with hearsay on this one.
ROFL. I’m sure he wasn’t the only one the CP escorted home.
Heh. I suppose we could improve the score by attempting a reverse sexist with a backflip and a double Lutz.
Oh, and stick the landing.
John. He reportedly can talk Kennedy into anything.
“Pat” gives me the creeps… Eeeeew!
Are you funning us? How old was he then?
Wait, wikipedia will take moment…
He was born in 1927.
So you are saying he was gaga in his 60s? You serious?
Or was he a drunk (no offense to Irish, I just assume most Senators are drunks)
thanks. Drunk. Check.
Neither does mine, though, as long as we still have a media which enables G. Gordon Liddy.
How does a convicted felon get airtime to promote such a vulgar opinion on the worthiness of a seated judge for Supreme Court?
Get ready to gag.
Presidents Bush, Clinton Team Up in Toronto; Clinton Says His View on Gay Marriage Is ‘Evolving’
Sounds like Bill was against it but won’t say that now he is in favor (so presumably he is not). Pretty subtle evolution, I’d say.
Well now, that’s good news. I’m wondering if anyone actually believes Liddy at this point? How could they?
Talk about a woman’s cycle is really pretty past tense. Where has this man been for the last 35 years?
Why is it that “gag’ always seems to come up in Clintonian sex references?
Well, he’s pretty current for the GOP which is stuck in the 1950’s status quo view of things…calling Pelosi “pussy galore” and such…
Teddy summed it up quite succinctly @ 26.
No publicity is bad publicity. Liddy’s remarks were bound to anger many readers/viewers, hence they were deemed newsworthy.
Yup, and they’re scardy. Just like Cheney.
someone linked to this a few days and ago and it seems on topic for this thread.
I knew Pussy Galore.
Yeah, when did the governance of our country devolve into a tawdry night time soap opera???
Oh, right, cable.
Talk about a woman’s cycle is really pretty past tense. Where has this man been for the last 35 years?
hey – wait a minute.
you mean that there might actually be some proof to my contention that the ex actually *was* a b***h evey single day of the world?
G. Gordon Liddy. When I rode in an elevator in Jerusalem with him he was wearing leather pants. Must of been a style thingy.
Really? Tell.
gotta love it.
GOP Hispanic Strategists Stunned by Sotomayor Attacks.
And the really freaky part is that they still have women in the republican party. Hard to believe, isn’t it? They must want to be controlled.
Well, that’s really all there is to tell, I think.
Possible!
Aside from the bitch and PMS labels, which are the territory of immature boys who are scared of women, I have a problem with the depiction of Sotomayor as not white. In biology there are 3 “races” of humans: caucasian, negroid and mongoloid. Since Hispanics are neither negroid or mongoloid they must be considered caucasian, otherwise known as white. I don’t like all of these descriptors anyway as we are all the “human” race to me and as things are going we are all going to be bi-racial and a lovely shade of cafe au lait in 200 years anyway. At any rate this really should not be anything to argue over in 2009. I think the real issue that the right has is that she is a strong woman taking a job away that “should” be a man’s.
I think the goal is to tap into all the anti-immigrant xenophobia on the right, even if it’s not even remotely applicable in her case (what with Puerto Rico being part of America and all).
McClatchy, one of the few actual newspapers out there with integrity, has had some coverage of Sotomayor’s record.
Liddy is despicable, always has been, always will be. But why do we know and recall his name (and Ollie North’s) from Republican scandals (Watergate and Iran Contra) and not the people who brought them down? Because they made a great living from being ‘media stars’. This is Liddy trying to get more listeners.
But with Sotomayor 55 years old, one wonders how even this lowly worm could imagine the state of her physiology to be that of someone obviously younger?
The sign in the women’s room where I used to work:
Once a month, women act like men do all the time.
Unfortunately, it’s not just men. One of the leaders in the “slam Sotomayor campaign” is a woman named Wendy Long. This clip show how out of touch she is with reality.
I will never understand the rationale behind attacking empathy, but then again, I have a conscience.
http://progressnotcongress.org/blog/?p=1465
Does anyone know who sponsers his show? I want to write to them. This is outreagous.
