I’m shocked, shocked I tell you:
Former New York police commissioner Bernard Kerik was indicted on charges of making false statements to White House officials vetting him for the secretary’s seat at the Department of Homeland Security in 2004, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
Kerik, who served as commissioner from 1998 to 2002, allegedly gave false and misleading answers to Bush administration officials about his relationship with contractors who renovated his Riverdale apartment, according to the indictment handed up by a Washington grand jury.
Prosecutors allege Kerik received and concealed benefits of about $255,000 in renovations to his home from contractors seeking to do business with the city of New York.
Bernie adds this to his fine collection of indictments for tax fraud, corruption and conspiracy.
Not sure what my favorite Bernie Kerik story is, but it may be from Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s Imperial Life in the Emerald City:
The CPA’s Interior Ministry team shared a modest office in the palace with American advisers working with the Justice Ministry. They often brought in Iraqi judges, along with interpreters, for meetings.
"Bob, who are these people?" Kerik asked Gifford one day. "Who the fuck are these people?"
"Oh, those are Iraqis," Gifford replied.
"What the fuck are they doing here?"
"Bernie, that’s the reason we’re here."
And the war turned out badly. Can’t imagine why.

No one could’ve predicted…
Anyone ask Rudy Rudy Rudy about his good friend lately?
I disagree. When was the last time anyone was prosecuted for lying in their confirmation vetting?
Well, the upside is, we still have Bernie Kerik to kick around.
The Bush DoJ worked at sub-glacial speed on this case, and magically, barely four months into the new administration, Bernie “the bag man” gets indicted.
quite surprised we aren’t reading about the Obama DOJ’s partisan jihad against this upstanding law enforcement veteran
uh, cbl you were saying ? lol
You think that might be a coincidence? Really?
Guess the Rs aren’t stupid enough to try to defend Kerik. First sign of intelligence I’ve seen.
But I thought this was a time for reflection, not retribution!
Morning all :)
OT…:) couple of different things for some light reading.
Study Finds Ethnic Profiling Useless in Preventing Terror
By Andrew Curry
‘A new study has found that ethnic profiling is worse than useless when it comes to preventing terror attacks and has never led to a terrorism conviction in Europe. The findings could have profound implications for police work at all levels.’

‘If We Now Kill Schoolgirls, You Shouldn’t Be Surprised’
By Matthias Gebauer and Shoib Najafizada in Kunduz, Afghanistan
Responding to threats from the Taliban, at least 10 girls’ schools have shut down near Kunduz in northern Afghanistan. Visiting the schools is a dangerous proposition — a trip leading directly into the heart of Islamist territory.
When the deputy director of Aqtash High School talks of the government, he isn’t referring to Hamid Karzai’s central government in Kabul. Nor does he refer to the provincial administration in Kunduz. “The Taliban are our government,” Bashir says. “They have taken over our region, their commanders give the orders here.”

‘The Germans are responsible for the industrial-scale mass murder of 6 million Jews. But the collusion of other European countries in the Holocaust has received surprisingly little attention until recently. The trial of John Demjanjuk is set to throw a spotlight on Hitler’s foreign helpers.’

WRT ethnic profiling, I am reminded of the NSA quip: they think the way to find a needle in the haystack is by adding more hay.
Tragically, Bernie’s names has already been taken off the Tombs’ Annex in Lower Manhattan.
It would have been so cool for Kerik to be in a jail named after himself.
Wow. That would have been irony to the nth degree.
OT
Ted Olson to take a case to challenge Prop 8. Wonders never cease.
Maybe he’s doing the flip side of multidimensional chess and trying to lose the case…
Pond scum.
He’s teaming up with Boies, so it doesn’t look like that (not that I thought Boies did a good job at Bush v. Gore).
OT
I have put up a tribute to Marcy Wheeler and Freedom of the Press on this day of her award by the Hillman Foundation. Along with a link for donations.
I realize you may have your own plans for such a tribute. But I felt inspired this morning!
P.S. If any of the mods knows how to go in and fix the link in my diary for “donation” – I realize just now that it takes you to the Hillman Foundation. Oops! Please help!
This is an outrage. The criminalization of lying!!!!
This was discussed on Lisa’s blog last night … Ted Olsen seems committed to overturning Prop 8. The case will be heard today.
EDIT: Oh and G’morning all !
Thanks. I was not on that thread.
sadly funny that..
The crime was that Kerik was ever considered. Senators Schumer and Clinton, who both supported the nomination, were prime accessories.
We have the world’s best (and fastest) Mods.
One of the best lines I’ve ever heard on the subject.
I didn’t have any opinion one way or the other on Kerik when he was NYC police chief; not a subject I am qualified to opine on. But the telling story for me on Kerik was when he went over to Iraq for a couple of three months & came back crowing that he’d trained the Iraqi police force. How anyone could consider appointing him to anything else important after that was beyond me. I understand that W likes people like that, all braggadocia, no accomplishments, but what were Schumer & Clinton thinking? Is it some sort of DC tradition that you have to support all nominees from your state regardless of qualification? And then there’s Schumer and Muskasey.
I found the EDIT button! I feel like such a dummy! LOL!
You folks deserve such credit here! Along with Marcy! Kudos to all!
LOVE it!!
lol
GREAT COMMENT alert!
Sounds like an excerpt from Catch 22;
“Can’t we get rid of them?”
“Bernie, you don’t get it, see, if they weren’t here, we wouldn’t be here, that’s the catch.”
“What catch?”
and ditto that TheraP, to the Nth degree.
FDL posters and THE best bar none on teh intratoobz, and the commenter’s here are absolutely astounding. All the time, too.
Siri !
Hear ! Hear !
Schumer and Clinton based their support on the expectation that the hometown boy could be relied upon to generously funnel DHS funds to NYC. Against which, his inexperience, incompetence, and corruption did not rise to the level of disqualification.
Why do we care that he lied to the White House? Wasn’t that the Bush/Cheney Administration? Seriously…we care that he lied to the White House back then? Did anyone tell the truth about anything for eight years?
Hey, if Rudy had been elected President, things would be different!
That was always the picture Steve Gilliard would put up whenever he talked about Guiliani or Kerik.
Holy crap. It’s about time! What’s the statute of limitations on this?
