The Grateful Dead – Maggie’s Farm, live at Madison Square Garden, Sept. 19, 1987.
What’s on your mind tonight?
Hiya Suz, I didn’t know Santa could play lead and sing…
hey newton – how’s the bay area tonight? foggy and drizzly has been the order of the day around here.
no comment bb?
Sticky. Still and sticky. You could grow papayas in this climate.
ewwww, i’ll take overcast over sticky any day newt.
Can’t comment right now. Still trying to lift my jaw up off the floor after reading that Ted Olson has joined the fight for gay rights.
Not quite… But the Tomatoes are loving it Newt so don’t complain !!
How are all the Pups tonight??
my local news just showed some live footage of the folks walking at the hollywood protest. was peaceful and there were a LOT of peeps.
hey frank – yeah, makes ya wonder why don’t it
Hi guys. What a day, huh? Makes you want to be a deadhead again…
hey nahant – i hear you have a birthday this week – gonna celebrate?
hey loohoo – how’s the southland tonight?
WHAT???
I think we can reasonably conclude that Ted has a son or daughter, niece or nephew who…
Hi nahant!
It’s cool. I’m wearing socks again! (not ONLY socks)
I need Ted Olson info.
Perhaps, but are there artichokes?
This guy – professional Clinton-hater, whose wife died while crashing into the Pentagon…
yesterday was short sleeved tshirt – today i’m back to fleece
“Maggie’s Farm”… nicest music I have heard in a while
We had a sunny afternoon on the Morro Bay…sand flies on the dunes but were not after me on my sun break. Some nice sculling weather. Hope all are well.
Yup!! Out for Sushi on Friday evening… Bonsai … been going there for 18 years.. best Sushi on the Peninsular..
Well…everyone has the right to my opinion G)
tis a good tune for a summer night bb. like dylan’s version but this had such a good groove to it.
Say Loo Hoo how ya doing??
Hard rain here for an hour or so, then misty-moist and pine-scented. The neighbor’s pine tree is a mixed blessing.
I know him, newt. Olson is my last name so I’ve followed him. I just can’t find anything saying he’s pro gay marriage. I’ve been to Huff, TP, C&L, TPM, NYT…
hey margot – there was lemon balm at the nursery yesterday – i didn’t get any but did pick up some lemon thyme
teddy said something about it in lisa’s thread but there is no link
good evening all
thunderstorms predicted to last all afternoon, but didn’t happen…sun came out at 4:00 p.m. and I was able to mow the yard after all
Just fine. Settling into retirement…fits well!
Bill Moyer on single payer last Friday the Docs and Nurses have taken to the street and are getting arrested…they are tired of being turned down by the Insurance clerks. Don’t like Senator Baucus. Say call your critters.
hey neuro – so far, everyone is reporting a non-summer like day except for those sweating in the bay area
gonna do a cake nahant?
You lay OFF the fat man, hoss, he’s DAWG, ya know . . *G*
(laughing) hey larue – i thought that was clapton
You can probably stop looking, you will not find it. He is a traditional Hard-Right Authoritarian asshole who is partially responsible for engineering the Clinton impeachment from his connections in Arkansas. He is bad news.
As I said, he must have peeps with skin in the game – kids or other loved-ones who are getting to him.
Where on Peninsula? San Mateo?
Amen.
Hi, Suzanne! You choose the best music! (cartoons, too, of course).
Still smiling over the other night’s LLN music thread.
Weather – had thunderstorms last night, over the weekend, pretty nice today, getting sticky now. May have to run the AC awhile to be able to sleep. It’s summer here in So Central TX, but not as hot as usual.
When I first moved here, I was at a party my first January, when a group began talking about the weather.
“Don’t worry,” one woman reassured me. “It doesn’t hit the upper 90’s until late April.” [my italics]
And so it has been most of the next 24 years, until the last few, when seasons have been odd, winter lasted longer, spring has come later, but summer, once arrived, is just as hot and sweaty as always.
Me too!! Start getting SS in July!!!
thanks – and yikes! i don’t do hot and sweaty well – i carry my own personal summer around with me thank you very much *g*
Now YER killin me, spellin is everytin . . . DAWG, god . . . ;-)
he also played a role in Bush’s theft of the 2000 election–I believe he argued Bush v Gore at the Supremes
Atherton on El Camino!! We live in Redwood City… How about you Laure??
He is like crab-grass, like Poindexter or Frank Gaffney, or Eliot Abrams – never goes away.
I think you’re right.
just yanking ur chain dood
Or maybe he’s all closeted…!
NIce GD Suz . . . man I seen them a lot in the day . . . Fillmore, Winterland . . .
Great version of Zim’s tune . . . . the five of them . . . . oh, and Brent Mydland on keys I think?
Miss them dearly . . . . a fine FINE band with a lot of styles they’d throw at ya . . .
Only Los Lobos ever brought that much change in style to the table, song to song, IMHO.
*G*
listening to the sounds of silence. is everyone outta quarters for the jukebox?
Just going to be the two of us so probally not.. We would never finish it.. We don’t eat a lot of sweets… but every so Often… Apple Pie…mmmmmmmmmmmm
I remember. Norskeflamthrower (or whomever-Norske) will join us soon too.
sounds of Silence
There!!
i think i may have seen them up at a concert in marin county. can’t remember much about the show other than it was good and so was the smoke being passed around.
thanks nahant – apple pie makes a great birthday cake
John Mayall?
Giving you a little room to move.
oh loohoo, i love that song… thanks
glad you are enjoying retirement. i forking love it. no more alarm clocks. rolling over and going back to sleep whenever i feel like it.
Knew that.. retiring from nursing iirc..
Hi all. This is a perfect song for me tonight. I have to do “replay” in this tired “Victory Through Peace ” dirt worshipper’s memory banks.
I started doing “victory” gardening at the onset of the war. I was misguided.
Now I garden a Victory Through Peace theme. I had to seriously extend my garden and focus on large yields rather than “cool, fun veggies”, canning/freezing qualities over diversity. All Idaho potatoes [our region] instead of French Fingerlings, etc. Snap peas that require more initial tending but produce higher yields. And I love it!
I’ve just been able to raise my head above my dear shovel and I’m seeing that an amazing percentage of gardeners are doing the same thing.
Growing more because you can.
Sharing more because there’s less.
iirc, today or tomorrow is norske’s last shift
hey open hope – i took my first step yesterday – got some herbs at the nursery. still have to get the planter boxes – and more plants.
We want to send a signal that this is an important constitutional issue involving equal rights for all Americans.” [9]
And eating only when you’re hungry and only what you crave! And if the car’s dirty? Oh, well.
Wow, Atherton . . . that’s good digs.
We used to be in San Mateo . . . . Parkside, and then just off ECR on West 39th . . .
Been Sacto since ‘88 . . .
Sure miss the fog over Crystal Springs, motocycle rides up 92 to 89, left to Four Corners.
Roller skatin along Crystal Springs from Bunker Hill Drive on the paved path to Millbrae. 6 miles one way.
Miss all the Bay Area club hopping, restaurant jobs, and more.
CSM, and the broadcast program, being on air, radio and tv.
A lot to miss. Sniff.
But hey, GREAT memories, from ‘64 to ‘88 . . . we built this city, ya know . . *G*
Teaching.

Might be phony, but if it is, it’s a damn good one.
Turning Point, one of the greatest albums ever done . . .
*G* Nice hit, LH . . *G*
Good for you. What’s the trick with snap peas?
This one’s via the AP:

putting slippered feet on the coffee table while eating pancakes for dinner – my celebratory dinner
Reason we are staying put… besides can’t move Julie’s Music School.. But we love Redwood City our Eichler and the dead end street we are on.
thanks frank – interesting pairing
Slippered feets, pancakes, maple syrups . .
Yer livin the hi life, gal, ain’t cha . . *G*
love the outfits in this video
Last I recall of Redwood City was Barney Steele’s, and some band I used to record there, for CSM broadcast. *G*
I heard it’s gone now . . . . I hear the Pulgas Water Temple is still up there, and the Tivoli Gardens, too (did I spell that right)?
worked dayam hard to get here dood. i keep having to tell myself, if not now, when?
sorry, that was for larue at 74
Two Small Fundraisers ….. What I Learned
I had two small projects I cared about, and wanted to do this spring, but money to start them wasn’t there.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..-I-Learned
suz — norske’s last shift??? wtf
Motown was the shchizzz . . . then and now.
From ‘64 or so, to it’s end . . . the music of our lives . . .
The Temps, Smoky, Four Tops, Sam N Dave, and on and on with Berry Gordy’s stuff.
And all the girl groups, too . . . totally bitchen music, and make ya wanna shimmy . . . AND shake. *G*
yup, retiring and going fishing. iirc, norske had 5 shifts and a wakeup when we talked about it on a late late nite thread last week.
John Mayall!
Oooooh!
Here we go again? ; )
*G* Yeah, ya did work hard to get there . . .
Post garden pics when stuff grows . . .*G*
hey duttonpeabody – how ya been?
whatcha got? nothing playing at the moment so the jukebox is yours…
There’s a lot of Mayall to go ’round, Turning Point aside . . . ain’t there . . *G*
The best place to start gardening is kitchen herbs. Even when I was in no position to grow a garden, a few kitchen herbs were incredibly satisfying. Snipping oregano, thyme and rose mary for sauce.
If I have an old age that allows me to wind down my garden passion, herbs will be the last plants I tend.
There is no greater glory in summer than pots/beds of thriving herbs. imho.
But I have very definite theories on the need for common herbs in the human diet. DFH!
will do – and you are right about motown. great tunes and they worked those songs to make sure everyone was dancin.
tis my start. kitchen herbs. i’ve grown rosemary for years but this time, i want more than just rosemary. starting with baby steps but it is a start.
Yeah good spelling* But who cares about spelling??
We miss Barneys but there is till lots of live music around. My son’s friend sings in a rap group at all kinds of clubs around here and down in LA.
Roll Away The Dew, Aka Franklin’ Tower
A song about Franklin Meuli, who owned the SF Warriors Basketball Team, and other things, in the SF Region.
Meuli was a legend, in many ways . . . . The GD, they were Saints and this is Jerry at his prime . . . 1980. He’s bustin the shit out of it .l . *G*
How about this? (not John Mayall, but a favorite…)
sweet tunage
*G*
There used to be an annual race/walk/run/skate called Nuts To Zots.
Back in early ‘72 or so.
From the Woodside Peanut Farm to Rizotti’s Beer Gardens . . . I did it one year, cuz the event coordinator managed Chucks Steak House in San Mateo, in Borel Place, and my pals and a roomie worked there, as I did.
I came in second to last of 65 people . . . *G* We had some fun, night before, and the morning. I have NO idea how any of them pups were able to run . . *G*
I miss the Peninsula, Bay Area, and the fog . . . *G*
He’ll Have To Go
Herb pots work for me. But not thai basil. Is there a secret?
i thought that was gonna be the jim reeves version but ry… nice margot
hey sunny – i’m gonna stick them into a yet to be bought planter box and set it out on the front deck. got an old plastic garbage can that leaks that i’m gonna use on the back deck for potatoes.
John Mayall !! Saw him so many times. Awesome in the early years!!
Another influence of my youth.
” The time has surely come
for the laws to fit the crime”.
A song pleading for negotiations.
I had a problem with that song, can’t remember the name. We were active in the SoCal anti-war protests at the time. At 16 yrs old. And the big broyjers of friends doing the Vietnam lottery. I was in no mind for calm.
Now I’m older and I can here his request. But it’s still not working 49 years later.
Thanks. It’s a mindblower!
We just love it here.. especially the weather not too hoot and not too cold *G*
Voted best by government test!!
no linkie :(
Sun,water, sun, water…don’t plant until the nights warm up.
Hmmm, well, let’s try this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwGL5LDb4u8
that worked – and will get you moving
glad mine are still in their nursery pots – weather dood said it should continue warming up this week
I know – trying again:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
For some reason, sometimes using the link icon in the post box doesn’t work. Dunno why.
well, edit IS my friend I see.
Potatoes – wow!
Growsjust fine here in pots.. Love that Thai Basil!!
Yeah, Jerry at his top, and the vocals and harmony spot on . . . damn I miss that stuff. Saw them a lot from ‘69 to ‘ 84 or so . . . they were good.
My fav was the nights (four of them) at Winterland, called The Wall . . . they stacked up speakers to the ceiling.
We went in (saw two nights, Friday and Sunday) and seen green and red led’s to the ceiling. It was insane to see, and more insane to hear, once they lit up . . . great, great music, 4 and more hours each time, of GD. *G*
supposedly good growing – i’ve got a couple red and a couple yukon golds that i’m gonna toss into it along with some potting soil to get them started and see what happens. nothing ventured nothing gained.
tejan, you are getting the little box popup to paste the url into and then clicking ok?
I’ve grown Thai Basil, purple and green . . . no secrets . . . fortified soil, miracle gro watering.
Fine, fine cooking stuff . . . I made pesto with it, too . . . fine fine flavors . . . *G*
It’s all new to me. Got a garden going, for starters.
One Of My Fav Dead Songs, Evah.
Cold Rain And Snow is an old folk and bluegrass song, done fast. The Dead did it faster than this on their first album.
It remains one of my fav camp jam tunes when I get out there, and get to pick with others . . .
I like it in D, but it’s best in E . . . minor and modal, what’s not to like sez this Larue . . *G*
Thx, sun, heat and water I’ve got. Soft stem basil thrives… I’ll give thai one last shot. Good stuff.
Seems like we’re all in the same time warp, huh? *
great song!
is arugula an herb or a lettuce?
Yup, and that was when it didn’t work. Sometimes it does, sometimes not.
I would say it’s because my security program is blocking pop-ups – I get the message and have to “allow pop-ups temporarily. but still, sometimes that works fine.
The two times that worked, I just pasted into the body, without using the link pop-up box. That worked. (shrugging shoulders, frenchly)
time warp
*scratching head* hmmm thanks
Hey y’all…I’m very pissed at the California Supreme Court.
Here’s another treat. (get past the first 30 secs)
hey that guy – so am i. makes no forking sense to me at all
Mayall fans may like this. Featuring guitarist Peter Haycock with saxman Colin Clemens playing the uncommon simultaneous leads

Suze – another time warp.
Hey, I ‘discovered’ Queen in 1992. Talk about stuck!
A few years later, my older son zapped me with rap.
I never realized I lived in fucking Alabama.
great tune loohoo
Outta here… Nite Pups (:>))
hey emerson
g’nite nahant
had not heard that one before that guy- thanks
That was off of Turning Point, I think . . . ”The Laws Must Change”.
My Guess
And yer spot on, methinks . . . again I’ll say, it’s one of the best ever albums of all time.
*G*
Now that I think about it, air circulation is a good ingredient, too. Basil needs air around it.
Basil is truly the “king of herbs”.
Brad Paisley is a Tele-Monster.
Nice.
Thank you! That was so good.
hellecaster stomp
Has anyone gotten the sense of “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” WRT Obama?
I like some of what he’s done but I don’t see enough Iraq pullout for my liking.
I like the Sotomayer nom, and, no, I don’t think McCain would have been better, but the move to the right (some would say “center”) he’s made lately is troublesome.
G’night all.
Tomorrow’s another full day of digging in the dirt, weather permitting.
Bad weather and I curling up on the couch and watching the DVD “Yes Men” for a second time before I mail it to netflix. I celebrate the cajones on those 2 young men!!! Gives me an adrenalin boost. What a kick!!
Suze – 10 years ago, I was in Nashville for 10 days, and saw the Hellecasters at the Gibson Cafe. Hung out with Lee Roy Parnell and a session guy named Bill Hullett, who threw a barbecue for me.
I had a great time and Will Ray just blew my doors off.
Hey That Guy, if you are a bit pissed now, get a load of this:
Army chief: US ready to be in Iraq 10 years
nite openhope!
love will ray – have santa cruzin’ on my ipod. he gives good guitar that guy (so does that lee roy parnell guy)
g’nite openhope
Christ on a sidecar.
Welcome to the great depression. Gonna make the 1930s look like Xmas by comparison.
I hope Obama has the ‘nads to say, “no, there will be no 10-year plan, we’re getting the fuck OUT!”
Well, it’s been real y’all…but I better turn in before I get too revved up. Need to play something quiet, peaceful…
(and tomorrow I dig around my old lp’s for that one John Mayall-if it’s still there)
nite and thx open hope
No kidding. The way it’s phrased suggests that it was inevitable, and they rolled it out on the day of a SCOTUS nomination. Better than a Friday news dump…
g’nite tejan
Bill Hullett is a badass, too.
oh yeah baby – that’s fine thatguy
This is good for winding down:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11iQ-xbjbnQ
Leon at his finest, and one of his best tunes that was NOT well known.
Nice pick LH . . *G*
Bill is such a sweetheart – he got us a good deal on mastering last year, out in Hendersonville, TN. I can only sit and listen in amazement when we play together – he’s just scary good.
i’m gonna save that one to wind down with later tejan. very calming and soothing
Another drive by with a slightly different time warp. Lesley Gore & You Don’t Own Me.
spit.
Suze – more fretboard wizardry
hey mr why – dang, i had that 45. defiant woman song before helen reddy.
Looove Parkening. I actually did see him live, back when some of y’all were seeing the Dead and Mayall etc., etc.
And now, to bed.
g’nite for realsies tejan
That sounds about right.
But hey, when that last guy was President we fretted every day that he’d do something really fucked up… Oh, wait…
Sweet . . . when Mayall steps out for some harp work, the shit breaks loose . . *G*
dood can play dood
It is disappointing. I keep reminding myself what it would have been like had McCain been elected.
They’re always only one election away. 2010 is a reality.
Beautiful and peaceful.
That must be so that a certain prince can look royal.
Leon is still doing clubs. My brother has tickets for us sometime late summer. Can’t remember who the other headliner is…
tis a bush clusterfuck and bush clusterfucks are not easy to unravel and fix.
She was SO hot . . . am transistor radio in Santa Cruz 1963 or so . . . Leslie Gore . . . whew, get me a towel. *G*
It’s my party, and now it’s Judy’s turn to cry, too . . .
Leslie Gore . . . . pure coastal tunage in my pre teens . . . rowr. *G*
good thing they hate us for our freedom, not our lack of honor.
I believe you have a diary right there, sunny
Leon with Joe Cocker . . . damn that was some FINE rockin music, no?
I gotta g’thud, folks . . .
Thanks Suz, for a FINE thread, and thanks FDL Pups for all the music love and memories.
Dayam we tripped the lights fantastic, back then, didn’t we . . *G*
*waves*
ditto – that would be a great ox diary sunny
I know where that’s coming from. But then I saw Fonda in “Barefoot in the Park” and the Gore thing sort of vanished.
Smit-ten.
g’thud larue and you’re welcome
Thanks so much! I hadn’t heard that since high school. I know it had a huge impact, though, cuz I could sing along. I remember the feeling.
nite larue
loohoo, now that you are retired, are ya planning any trips? i took a road trip to oregon and washington since i had never been up here before. (laughing) look where that led me…
Good night, buddy.
Not yet. I’m just taking ‘er easy.
i retired in october and made that trip in march – took some time to settle down and get used to this new phase of my life. was strange not having a ‘return by’ date – trip was as open ended as i wanted it to be. that turned out to be a week.
I hereby join you. Wow.
hey markh
Palace of the Kings! Great stuff.
He says “global trends …”. Now he’s gotta show his work because I do not believe him. I say, as so many others here have, we should do our job and then GET OUT.
hey Suzanne.
time for me to head out pups. thank you for all the great tunes.
g’nite all.
Some interesting stuff today on t.v. First the nomination, later this evening a Pakistani discussing everything going on there and then Karl Rove discussing bipartisanship with Plouffe. What a world. I think the Pakistanis and Indians or the Israelis and Palestinians or the California Dems & Repubs are getting along better than the Bushies and … well just about everybody.
Play ball!
