From John Cornyn’s statement on Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor.
…it is imperative that my colleagues and members of the media do not pre-judge or pre-confirm Ms. Sotomayor.
Like, say, Cornyn himself did with Samuel Alito.
The President has chosen a well qualified nominee for our nation’s highest court. It is clear that Judge Alito is a man of outstanding character, who is deeply committed to public service, and has a distinguished history of professional achievement and leadership.
And while RedState and The Corner call her stupid, which I’m sure will do wonders for the GOP’s Latino outreach program, Roger Pilon busts out the "r" word.
Cato Institute scholar Roger Pilon slammed Sotomayor as "the most radical of all the frequently mentioned candidates before" Obama.
As does Americans United Against Choice.
She is a radical pick that divides America.
Yes, she’s so radical that George H.W. Bush appointed her to the bench and fellow radicals Orrin Hatch and Richard Lugar voted to confirm her.
But naturally, Huck takes first prize.
The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama’s campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric.
In Huck’s defense, he probably just assumed that all Puerto Rican chicks are named "Maria."

Leave it to Huckleberry… I’d be laughing if it weren’t so
pitifulstupidracist.I remember West Side Story — Huck is right! What a maroon.
Teddy, so sorry to hear the Prop. 8 decision.
Hucky has been in the shine again, it is slurrying his mind.
As a Texan, I feel I have to apologize to y’all for John “post turtle” Cornyn. I promise we’ll do our Democratic best to get rid of him as soon as possible.
nah – I gave up apologizing for Evan Bayh a long time ago.
sometimes there’s just too much Stoopid for one person to overcome.
But naturally, Huck takes first prize.
He’s probably had that statement ready to go for weeks, merely waiting for the ability to fill in the blank left where the actual name of the candidate appears.
I love the Rs just as they talk about the big tent and every one in it. I wonder if they’ve noticed yet they’re playing to smaller and smaller crowd and they’re all white.

Everything is on schedule, please move along.
Yup, and that just goes to show the quality of people around him that there was no one to say, “Um, Mike, her name is SONIA.”
I guess Oxycontin boy didn’t get the memo. He’s off message already with “she’s the antithesis of a judge…”
o/t kinda,

Greenwald today:
“Anyone who wants to characterize her as “left-wing” should be compelled to point to specific judicial rulings or other evidence for that characterization. The fact that she’s Latina and from the Bronx isn’t actually evidence of her ideology or judicial philosophy.”
this should go for knee-jerk supporters as well as knee-jerk opponents, one would think.
Orrin Hatch is saying that he only voted for Sotomayor because she was part of a package deal with Pat Moynihan.
A vote trade, iow.
Shouldn’t that kind of admission get Hatch thrown off the SJC, possibly outta the Senate, and subject to possible criminal corruption charges?
Caught you moonlighting, Huck.

note to self:
ok – maybe the crim corruption charges are a reach. Need more data.
thereby leaving colleagues Lugar, Snowe, Collins, Gregg, Cochran, and Bennett out in the cold – I got mine bitches !
Did anyone catch Cokie Roberts comment on Sotomayor’s appearance this morning?
That she was dressed very plainly and could be mistaken for someone’s secretary?
What’s wrong with a little legislative logrolling or backscratching or whatever the young’uns call it these days?
That was back in the days of “Let’s Make a Deal”, a much different time than the Hell No, I Won’t Go mood of Congress today.
*sigh*
Did she mention that Scalia was dressed like a waiter at a pretentious restaurant?
Gawd what an elitist.
What??? Meowwwww
Cokie never talks about policy – it’s always some underhanded little snide comment. In my book that makes her a first class b*tch.
I am really glad that I know get to hear how many people in politics and the media really feel about Latinas, specifically east coast latinas with roots in the carribean. Their veiws on african-americans have long been known through forced reaction to the result of the civil war, enactment of jim crow laws and the passage of the civil rights bills in the 60s.
But now for the first time they are being forced to recognize and deal with a Latina who is not a mexican from california or texas. This is really interesting.
Attila the Hun would be called a radical if he were nominated by a Democrat. The Republicans would have no problem with the pillaging and looting but nomination by a Democrat would be an instant disqualification.
I didn’t see that, but I’ve finally gotten to the point I can’t watch much of them anymore. I have to take ‘em in small 2-3 minute doses; no more watching the whole show.
Even as it relates to Keith & Rachel.
The more I watch them try to clean up the stupid, the more stupid comes to the surface.
Comments like the above are exhibit ‘a’.
WTF does that comment have to do with anything? Anything at all?
Like Cokie effing Roberts is some beltway fashion expert.
Like a persons personal sense of fashion (or disregard of it as important) is in any way relevant to being a jurist.
To be fair, I’m not sure she used the word secretary.
Cornyn? “Ms. Sotomayor”? Like her or not (and I’m not crazy about her) she’s a sitting federal JUDGE and should be addressed and referred to as “judge.” Not “Ms.”
…and suddenly that name
will never be the same…
general question for the Court Watchers –
is it unusual that two CA Justices wrote a concurring opinion in a 6 – 1 case ??
Never fear, we will get the final official Beltway elitist word from Sally Quinn within the hour, I’m sure.
Cokie Roberts should be ashamed of herself.
I heard the same report, and I came away with the same impression you convey. If she did not use the word secretary, she used the functional equivalent.
ummm, doesn’t cokie dress in that ’severe professional’ wardrobe, too? like a secretary?
freudian.
maybe ‘maria’ and she wore the same outfit to a dance once. or better yet, bet ‘maria’ gets better invitations, and with no ‘pedigree’ of the country club kind..i think we’re going to be hearing a lot about pedigree, bork already went there on fox a minute ago. reaaly emphasized her background, and let it ‘hang’..wait for it..’maid in manhattan ‘ can’t be far behind.
Fox holds women in high regard

I’m sure she owns just the right little black gown…
Huck misspeaks on purpose and with purpose with that stupid “what? who me? what’d I say?” look on his face…
That’ll be the day, Prairie, that’ll be the day.
It was not so long ago that Cokie Roberts was criticizing Obama for taking an elitist vacation in his home state of Hawaii, instead of at Myrtle Beach which is a destination real Americans can relate to.
Cokie’s inconsistency is undermining her basic stupidity.
cokie, another one who climbed the ladder by the skin of her, um genes…in sally’s case her jeans zipper.
just wait, the social calender-keepers will be chiming in, they won’t be able to help it, the bile is rising.
they already had tucker on fox this morning, another fine example…next we’ll have luke russert with his ‘perspective’…
this is gettin’ good. we’ll all truly know the meaning of ‘elitist’ by the end of the hour. it will be coming out of the mouths of those who didn’t earn any of what is on their resumes.disguised in phrases like ‘commendable accomplishments’, ‘came from the projects’ and ‘temperament’.meaning puerto-rican street chick….i give it 15 more minutes.
bbl
I’m sure
she ownssomeone gave her just the right little black gown…Accused War Criminal John Yoo weighs in on Sotomayor:
oh yeah, I’m heartbroken
Apologies all, it was Totenberg, not Cokie!
“…there were, if have to say, no airs; she was not dressed fancy [sic] at all; she could have passed… she was wearing a plain black suit with a yellow top; if you’d walked into an office, you could have thought that she was the judge or the secretary. But…”
Thought the How-she-was-dressed commnent was from Nina Tottenberg, not Cokie Roberts.
It is amazing what one can get away with wearing under the “little black gown”
similar dish from the same menu.
rofl.

300 million people in this country, which includes thousands of journalists and opinion writers, and we’re stuck with (on TV) the same 20 or so dunderheads to comment and reflect on all things political.
I thought elections had consequences. Shouldn’t some new blood be circulating through the pundit loop?
If I never see Pat Buchanan again, it will be too soon.
Talk about being past one’s political shelf life!
Tomato, to-mah-to…
Just went back over the comments… she still deserved everything she got.
The only thing he needs to be “weighing in on” is appropriate dress when appearing before The Hauge.
Jane’s got more on Sotomayor
GOP to Soak Wingnuts over Sotomayor
Interesting. I’ve always thought Nina Totenberg is one of the better NPR talkers. And in any case, comments about Sotomayor’s dress are inappropriate in discussions about her qualifications for the SCOTUS. Did anyone comment about Roberts’s attire when he was nominated?
Someone should please find the Laura Ing quotes….she had a major hoot about the nominee’s hard life from Princeton to Yale, if I recall correctly, with a big dollop of recall about Justice Thomas Reallllllly hard life.
Just saw Jon Turley of all people weighing in on the lack of “intellectual heft” in her opinions.
Now, I’ll give him credit (he says he actually read 30 or so of her opinions before commenting) for doing his homework, but this sounds like legal elitism.
How in the world can you graduate summa cum laude from Princeton, yet lack “intellectual heft”? I’ll bet you can’t.
Just because her opinions don’t give high falutin’ lawyers the vapors from reading them doesn’t mean she’s not capable.
Does this man look bright enough to run a vaccuum cleaner, let alone this country? Jesus, where do they find these people?
maybe his white robe and pointy hat./s
not in st. louis!!!
hey, i was born there….
All I gotta say is this:
Obama’s team had better done a completely thorough job of vetting this candidate. She’d better have paid her taxes early at 110% of what was owed; no illegal nannies or gardeners; no photos of her and a bong in 1985; minimally, four generations of documented marriages, births and deaths; no abortions going out to cousins thrice removed; no skeletons in the closet – absolutely above reproach. Oh, and it might be nice if she’s got any court opinions out there that were well-thought out and well regarded in the judicial community.
If they screw it up this time, no one will take them seriously for any position. This is crucial to Obama potentially losing all credibility with everyone.
I’ll second that.
what I find amusing about this thread is that the misattribution of the “secretary” clothing remarks to Cokie Roberts, though not accurate, were perfectly believable…
