I agree, but think that the constitution has become a doormat for both parties. The corporations own congress thru the legal bribery system called “campaign contributions”. Ever notice how congress lines up to support whatever the corps want? The credit card bill-with no interest(usury?) cap. Same thing will happen with health ins, just like it happened with the rethug medicare perscription benefit. It really benefits the drug makers and the health ins industry rather than the people.

Actually, the report came on Sunday may 24.At least in the rest of the world. Was watching KBS-a Korean channel-when movie interrupted at 9pm CDT by news flash from S Korean govt about N Korea bomb and missile test. Checked Singapore station, same news. Checked Japan and China channels, same news. Checked CNN..crickets. talking heads blathering about fake “debate” between Obama and cheney. Checked what used to be CNN Headline News. Nope, they don’t do HNN anymore, but cleb gossip, yep.

It’s not about empathy, generally understood. It’s about adherence to the will of government and corporate executives over those they are in conflict with. Empathy is, among other things, shorthand for taking into account both sides: labor’s as well as management’s; the individual’s as well as government’s; the tax-paid commitments as well as the taxpayer angst.

Obama will be able to reshape the judiciary more than any president in generations. Will this, “Show me the middle, the center be damned,” president really advocate for Sup. Ct. versions of Dawn Johnsen? He hasn’t done much for her nomination to head the OLC - she languishes unvoted on in the senate.

Obama has adopted many, thankfully not all, of Bush’s policies. Will he adopt them in his Sup. Ct. nominations, too? Two more executive power over individual rights justices and kiss the Constitution as we know it goodbye for your lifetime.

So, that being the case, why does he keep getting reelected? The dems are slowly taking over state wide offices-gov for example-so is there any dem going to run against him? What are you doing to help get him out of office?

Knut, true that. But bottomline is: would you rather have Obama in charge…..or McCain/Palin?

Sorry…..that was pretty harsh!

Let’s not forget Obama’s basic premise — ‘yes, things are fucked up…..but out of these ashes we can build a newer, better model going forward’. This is what excites me.

California illustrates in just one more way and on one more dimension how truly monumental is the task facing the Obama administration. We all got a rush out of seeing a truly intelligent and gifted and emphatetic politician win the Presidency; but we kind of forgot the magnitude of the mess he inherited, which is more than just the shitpile bequeathed bythe Bush administration. I think this explains in large part his apprent timorousness on issues where we think he should be more bold. We are deep in the woods, and it’s a long way out with no obvious political path. It would help, though, if the Congressional Dems had a few more balls.

Mr. Krugman, in “State of Paralysis,” says the Golden State’s political system has been unable to deal with the recession. Does California’s political paralysis foreshadow the future of the nation as a whole?

Were I a betting person, I’d put every cent on a big, fat miserable “Yes”. As long as the t-bag mentality is fueled by multiple factors (including stupidity), that is the only direction the country as a whole *can* go. :-(((

LOL Allan. Exactly! We make fun of Kyl today, but in reality, there are quite a few Democrats who will echo his sentiments and the next thing we know we have a nation holding onto the leg of Sarah Palin in 2012 to save us from such evils! *shaking head*

But who needs Republican Neanderthals when we have Democrats like this:

Sen. Ben Nelson, a Nebraska Democrat who helped negotiate a compromise to avoid filibusters aimed at President George W. Bush’s judicial nominees, said the law alone should be the guide on whether nominees are seated. He also kept open the filibuster option.

“We don’t want to have to read judges’ minds. So I think that’s the test _ will they be an activist or not?” Nelson said. “I would hope that there wouldn’t be any circumstances that would be so extreme with any of the president’s nominees that the other side would feel the need to filibuster or that I might feel the need to filibuster in a case of extraordinary circumstances.”
