To the surprise of well, no one, the conservatives of the Senate have announced their standards for a good Supreme Court Justice:
Sen. Jon Kyl made clear he would use the procedural delay if Obama follows through on his pledge to nominate someone who takes into account human suffering and employs empathy from the bench.
Boy I sure hope Obama asked potential nominees which they enjoyed more, drowning kittens or puppies? Kyl is going to want to know.
Is Werner Klemperer’s character from Judgment at Nuremberg still available?

About Firedoglake
Jon Kyl has been my senator for over 10 years……in the past he has stayed in the background and spread evil ……He has for years advocated to destroy Habus Corpus…
He just gives me the creeps…… another AZ senator who NEVER comes back to the state… he never does townhalls, never mingles with the riff raft….
The good news is what Kyle thinks on this matter doesn’t matter, if the Dems decide to play hardball for a change.
SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.
John,
What happened to the sacred rights of the President to appoint his choice of jurists for the Supreme Court? And what happened to the Senate’s obligation to provide an up or down vote on judges? Man, what a difference a racist attitude and a few short years can make…
Must have been a puny nuke! We didn’t feel anything here in Korea.
It’s that whole empathy thing that confuses kyle. Fucking maggot.
Am I the only one that remembers the r’s screaming “up or down vote” as loud as they could for bush judicial picks?
The party of no is not descriptive enough. They are the party of nothing.
Saw your comment as soon as I hit send. So I’m not the only one that remembers the up or down hysteria.
anya-ha-sayo!
Not to worry, everyone else is sleeping.
That little goofball may think he wants a nuclear war.
Thank you for your kindness. The Koreans are wonderful people and practice their English on me at every opportunity.
kyl is another pig who thinks black men are useful as cannon fodder in their racist wars but being 3/5 of a man at most, they lack the brilliance of graham, bond, stevens, mc connell and cheney to line their pockets in unending racist wars. Weather it’s $5 rugs or a killing portfolio like the cheney pig who’s reported worth is about $100,000,000 these are the same bastards are not voting for anyone off white or female.
These bastards are pretty ruthless in running the country into the ground as a minority party ,though.
I’d like to go back but something tells me that it’s a bit different from 42 years ago up in “I” Corps.
It is vastly different. The Geoje Island POW camp is a small museum surrounded by some of the largest and most modern and productive heavy industry manufacturing and shipbuilding conglomerates on the planet. It’s also crowded now.
While we’re at it, could someone please bring Kyle and Linseed Grahamcracker up
on Senate ethics charges for submitting false records of Senate debates to the Supreme Court?
Oh, I’m sorry, that wouldn’t be civil. Because ethics are for little people.
Some pretty good machine tools (cnc mills and lathes) coming out of there. They are beginning to rival the Japanese products, which have been among the best for some time now. Korean castings are far superior to the Tiwanese and Chinese versions, which is what a lot of manufacturers have gone to for cost reduction.
Wow, Memorial Day and in the spirit of the holiday, we are remembering recent Republican hypocrisy — if only the mass media had memories that go all-the-way back to a year ago.
But…but…it’s hard. It’s hard work…… the google.
Just when you think the Rs have plumbed the self-mocking depth, they reach a new low. Criticizing empathy, indeed.
Justice S. Whiplash (critically examining mine safety laws) shows appropriate judicial mien. And he already has the black robes.
Is Jon Kyl the one who likes to go camping with boys? According to Blogactive.
Good morning, pups. It’s Cohen and Krugman today. Mr. Cohen, in “Peaceful Evolution Angst,” says another quarter-century down the road he’d bet on more democracy and liberty in Beijing and Hanoi, achieved through peaceful evolution, no less. Mr. Krugman, in “State of Paralysis,” says the Golden State’s political system has been unable to deal with the recession. Does California’s political paralysis foreshadow the future of the nation as a whole?
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got French toast with a bit of cinnamon this morning. I’m feeling quite disoriented this morning, because for the first morning in over a week it’s not raining. If you’ve got lots to do today and don’t have time to read it all, here’s what I think is the money quote from Prof. Krugman:
Have a great day.
*shaking head* The right wing of America continues to sink to new lows each and every day. Is there a bottom to it all?
But who needs Republican Neanderthals when we have Democrats like this:
LOL Allan. Exactly! We make fun of Kyl today, but in reality, there are quite a few Democrats who will echo his sentiments and the next thing we know we have a nation holding onto the leg of Sarah Palin in 2012 to save us from such evils! *shaking head*
Were I a betting person, I’d put every cent on a big, fat miserable “Yes”. As long as the t-bag mentality is fueled by multiple factors (including stupidity), that is the only direction the country as a whole *can* go. :-(((
California illustrates in just one more way and on one more dimension how truly monumental is the task facing the Obama administration. We all got a rush out of seeing a truly intelligent and gifted and emphatetic politician win the Presidency; but we kind of forgot the magnitude of the mess he inherited, which is more than just the shitpile bequeathed bythe Bush administration. I think this explains in large part his apprent timorousness on issues where we think he should be more bold. We are deep in the woods, and it’s a long way out with no obvious political path. It would help, though, if the Congressional Dems had a few more balls.
Knut, true that. But bottomline is: would you rather have Obama in charge…..or McCain/Palin?
Sorry…..that was pretty harsh!
Let’s not forget Obama’s basic premise — ‘yes, things are fucked up…..but out of these ashes we can build a newer, better model going forward’. This is what excites me.
So, that being the case, why does he keep getting reelected? The dems are slowly taking over state wide offices-gov for example-so is there any dem going to run against him? What are you doing to help get him out of office?
It’s not about empathy, generally understood. It’s about adherence to the will of government and corporate executives over those they are in conflict with. Empathy is, among other things, shorthand for taking into account both sides: labor’s as well as management’s; the individual’s as well as government’s; the tax-paid commitments as well as the taxpayer angst.
Obama will be able to reshape the judiciary more than any president in generations. Will this, “Show me the middle, the center be damned,” president really advocate for Sup. Ct. versions of Dawn Johnsen? He hasn’t done much for her nomination to head the OLC – she languishes unvoted on in the senate.
Obama has adopted many, thankfully not all, of Bush’s policies. Will he adopt them in his Sup. Ct. nominations, too? Two more executive power over individual rights justices and kiss the Constitution as we know it goodbye for your lifetime.
Actually, the report came on Sunday may 24.At least in the rest of the world. Was watching KBS-a Korean channel-when movie interrupted at 9pm CDT by news flash from S Korean govt about N Korea bomb and missile test. Checked Singapore station, same news. Checked Japan and China channels, same news. Checked CNN..crickets. talking heads blathering about fake “debate” between Obama and cheney. Checked what used to be CNN Headline News. Nope, they don’t do HNN anymore, but cleb gossip, yep.
I agree, but think that the constitution has become a doormat for both parties. The corporations own congress thru the legal bribery system called “campaign contributions”. Ever notice how congress lines up to support whatever the corps want? The credit card bill-with no interest(usury?) cap. Same thing will happen with health ins, just like it happened with the rethug medicare perscription benefit. It really benefits the drug makers and the health ins industry rather than the people.
