My father’s father was in that war. He sometimes had to fight hand to hand in the Ardennes. When I knew him he was kind and gentle, but my father told me that after the war for some time he was out of control and very dangerous. Fortunately his home was way out in a holler (in WV). It’s hard for me to imagine him as a young man fighting, and cooking on the battlefield.</p> <p>I think of him every time I walk that way, not just on Memorial Day.</p> I walked through a part of my city’s park which runs along a road where there is a WWI memorial. Vertical gardens make it tougher for the racoons although they can be great entertainment as they demonstrate their gymnastic skills.<br /> My garden is mostly pest free do to physical barriers. Diatomacious earth sprinkled around the pot will disuade them. It is your very own micro eco system.
