It didn’t get much play, but earlier in the week, the Connecticut state senate voted to ban the death penalty earlier in the week. Now,
Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell vowed Friday to veto a newly approved bill banning the death penalty as soon as she receives it, saying capital punishment is appropriate for certain heinous crimes.
The measure, approved early Friday by the state Senate and last week by the state House of Representatives, would replace capital punishment with life in prison without the possibility of parole.
At least two-thirds of the members of each chambers would have to vote to override a veto. But achieving that margin is in doubt, given the tight 19-17 vote in the Democrat-led Senate. The bill passed 90-56 in the House, which also led by Democrats.
At the Orange Satan, they’ve got contact info. for Rell.
Interesting that we haven’t heard a peep from "pro-life" Catholic trolls like Gingrich, Bennett, Steele, K-Lo, Keyes, etc. demanding Rell "accept the will of the people" isn’t it?
"When it comes to life issues, the position of the church is exceedingly important and consistent,” Culhane added. "The church wishes to protect life from conception to natural death…

Hopefully the veto can be over turned by the legilature and Jodi Rell can look for a new job after the next election.
They think no one will notice the contradictions.
She needs her blood.
If only we could get the culture back in the petri dish.
Killing is always wrong.
Interesting that we haven’t heard a peep from “pro-life” Catholic trolls like…
Bill Donohue?
…president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the United States since 1993. It claims to be the largest Catholic civil rights organization in the United States.

Stem cells are sacred – people can pretty much go
fuck themselveskill whomever they want, so long as it has been decreed, somewhere, that we’re talking about really baaaad people.Anti-abortionists think life begins with conception & ends with birth. They don’t give a FF about anyone who’s alive & kicking.
why do goopers all have beady eyes
why do goopers all have beady eyes
in order to preserve very narrow views of complicated issues?
The “culture of life” only applies to the pre-born and the post-dead (e.g. Schiavo). In the middle? You’re on your own.
I think there must be fundie hypnosis involved.
They have beady brains.
Jodi Rell can go to hell.
Sounds like a campaign slogan to me.
Especially if the people alive and kicking aren’t white.
Rell, Rell, go to hell

I think quite often that these “good Christians” don’t just want to kill people who are “bad” but people are just sort of in the way and not worth much. Kind of like the man in Texas they executed who had an IQ of 37.
Especially if the people alive and kicking aren’t white.
maybe – but I get the impression that Gov. Rell would pretty much kill anybody, regardless of hue.
Kind of like the man in Texas they executed who had an IQ of 37.
had to check today’s headlines to make sure that you weren’t talking about georgie….
but no – georgie is alive, well, and has found his level of competence:
It was the first time Barney had ever been in an ordinary neighborhood, and Bush had to stop when the dog took liberties with a neighbor’s yard.
“And there I was, former President of the United States of America, with a plastic bag on my hand,” he recalled. “Life is returning back to normal.”
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/…..president/
ok – so I’m really not sure how competent he might be – even for poop-scooping…..
Makes perfect sense – the Commander Guy walking around with a bag of Sh*t.
Even better!

New Mexico repealed the death penalty in April.
LOL
BT can we get Ex Gov Ryan here to talk about this I think he will be willing to talk nobody was more Corporate GOP than him and the Rolando Cruz case deserves more play.
“Sanctity-of-life.”
It’s and obfuscating term, and one which is clearly inconsistently applied. I stopped being surprised, alarmed, or amused by the hypocrisy of it when I realized that while their views on life have no legitimate common thread; their views on sex absolutely do.
That’s why there’s no movement to abolish state-recognized divorce; the single greatest threat to the institution of marriage, the reason why warmongering isn’t an affront to their principles, and why the death penalty doesn’t count.
The only thing sacrosanct to Catholics and Christians of this particular ilk is the conviction of sexuality as the single greatest evil.
I was raised Catholic, went to all the classes, performed all the ceremonies, and coincidentally attended a Catholic university. I parted ways late in my adolescence when it was all too obvious that Christ’s message of pacifism and forgiveness was most lost on his most pursuant followers.
ROTFLMAO

Isn’t Connecticut’s only bad smell.

I think da Pope could be shaking down the American Psychological Association.
Da Pope: “So what we’re talking about here well, consider it protection.”
APA: “I don’t get it. Protection?”
Da Pope: “Hey – who ya think has been turning out all those guilt-ridden neurotic messes what been making youse rich for so many years?”
Da Pope: “that pipeline – without protection, something bad could happen to it. We’re talking about your best interests here ya know.”
The fallout of the Rolondo Cruz case gave Illinois Obama as a senator heck it gave Illinois to the Democrats.
This issue turned a red state blue studying it could help us elect Dems and help put a spine in some Dems who need it.
People in Illinois studied the issue for years and when people study the issues we win.
The hype to convict someone led the GOP prosecutors to finger Rolondo.
The desire to protect that lie much like Bush protected WMD led to the GOP’s undoing.
It is sad when the GOP ignores a serial killer ready to confess and name details because the lie built political careers.
Its sad when Mexican gangs decide to protect a serial killer in prison because they think he can free one of their own.
Normally race don’t matter serial killers might get protection but a child killer No.
But extending that protection to a white guy who says he can clear him yeah Right!
Jeffey Dalmer got no protection even from the guards watching him.
Da your from Chicago? I’m sure the last pope a Pole did not speak Chicago immigrant english .
The Current German pope well I’m not sure he has a Chicago accent.
I agree with your idea but lets not malign Chicago.
I live in CT. Jodi Rell is frequently referred to as ‘Snow White’ in part because she can do all sorts of things and still get away with it. She will win re-election in a landslide because the good people of the ‘Land of Steady Habits’ will not vote her out. Ever. We have that kind of history (look up her predecessor, John Rowland, and two mayors who have all served time in prison for various misbehaviors).
That said, on the local news, the family of a murder victim made a statement yesterday that caught my ear. It had to do with the sanctity of life and how the family was against the death penalty (wish I had the quote). This leads me to believe that, if the governor were to sign the legislation into law, wouldn’t this open a huge debate into the abortion issue – that is, if we can’t kill killers, why are we killing babies?
Yes, it’s a stretch, but as to another question as to where is the Right Wing on this one, I have a pretty safe bet on the answer:
Given that New England and the Northeast in general appears to be turning away from fundamentalist Christianity and Christianity in general, they won’t waste their time. WE’re all going to burn in h&ll anyway and they can do without us. Seriously, though, the northeast will probably never turn to conservatism, so we’re a lost cause and not worth spending the money on.
