  • The GOP: making the tough decisions.
  • Sign of the times.
  • Obama’s Catholic problem, cont’d.
  • Eeeeek!

Reading my local dead tree edition, I learn that Morley Safer thinks the blogosphere and “citizen journalists” are a danger to the universe and the cosy good ol’ boy way of doin’ Teh Journalism. [my paraphrase]

Semi-retired Morley really ought to have one of his grandchildren fire up a laptop and show him what’s actually going on in the blogosphere these days.
He seems to have plenty of 18th Century time on his hands.

So what persuaded a sizable majority of the House and Senate to vote for a bill lauding the “the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens?”

jhfc. Should I just assume that these “citizens” are all members of a Well Regulated Militia?

The Second Goddamned Amendment simply doesn’t say what these stupid fucks pretend that it says.

I should probably know this, but who actually wrote that Amendment? I just wanna send a thank-you card to the descendants for the countless American lives lost because of bad writing and poor punctuation.

The Rethugs not wanting the prisoners of Gitmo transferred to prisons here may actually be a good thing for the prisoners. Who’s to say that the prison guards here, not generally known for their understanding, wouldn’t allow other inmates to prey upon the prisoners from Gitmo.

Thats exactly what i want to happen! Take those cowards, who bomb innocent people and then hide in caves, and put them in with some real americans. Put them in with those aryan nation guys and those black muslim militants, who are actually in jail for real violent face to face crimes, and let those terrorists get a real welcome to america. Although i do know some are most likely innocent, but we could atleast do that to some of those guys.

Is anyone else sick unto death of “Let’s call in our own Richard Wolffe” on Countdown, night after night? Why should we care what he thinks? And for that matter, although I detest Limbaugh, I could sure use a break from him on Countdown every night, with that “bouncing” CPAC clip. A 30-day moratorium would be a welcome relief (for different reasons than Limbaugh’s).

I’d think MSNBC would have enough video clips in their library that they could run something other than that same waterboarding clip, the same clips of Cheney in the wheelchair, with his big hat, etc., over and over. Surely their video library is better than that, so is it just laziness?

For my money, Rachel has a far better show these days, with more interesting guests. I’ve begun fast forwarding the TiVo past some of Countdown.

I just sent my weekly complaint email to AM Joe:

Please tell Joe Scarborough that torture is illegal. The debate as to whether it works or not is irrelevant — it is illegal. I don’t have a lot of money (I know this will be hard for Joe to relate to) so, using Joe’s logic, I could go rob a bank. Though bank robbery is illegal, it would be OK because it worked. Why does Joe hate America?

That segment last night when Keef talked to the guy from Montana who wants some of the gitmo prisoners for their empty prison had some rather strange undercurrents. Like what lawmaker(s) inserted an earmark to bring that little jewel to his/her state? Like how many millions were spent building it so it could sit empty? Like how many other facilities (for whatever intended purposes) are there in other states?

Seems like that’s an investigation looking for a place to happen.

from BT’s boston globe link:

In the final debate of the presidential campaign, while banks collapsed and layoffs mounted, Barack Obama turned to the camera to speak directly to the 56 million Americans watching at home. His healthcare plan, he said, would save families big money on insurance.

“We estimate we can cut the average family’s premium by about $2,500 per year,” he said, repeating a promise he had made in the previous debate, and in stump speeches and television ads for the better part of a year.

As Congress prepares for a four-month sprint to pass a sweeping healthcare bill, though, it is hard to find anybody serious about health policy who believes premiums will actually drop anytime soon. Getting healthcare costs to grow at the pace of inflation, instead of two or more times that rate, would be “a tremendous stretch,” said John Sheils, senior vice president of the Lewin Group, a health policy consulting firm.

i’m starting to think that the only really important goal is to keep single payer off the table. nothing else i can see about the health care reform policy descriptions i’ve seen makes any sense to me. i’m so confused.

has anyone read the various proposals (such as they are) and understand in depth any aspect of this? i’d love an explanation.

Interestingly, tying into your comment @45, Hawaii had such an overcrowding of prisons they were forced to ship off large numbers to the mainland(by federal court order) and it actually spawned a building boom for CCA at various locales… Now, the State is reeling from the hefty price tag… Ironically, much of the cause for it was because each Isle adamantly said NIMBY…!

It’s always seemed to me to be impossible to prevent all future acts of terrorism in this country. Sooner or later, one is very likely and Cheney et. al. will get to say “I told you.” It’s a pretty cheap investment in demagogery. I’ve always thought the population should be told that the government will do it’s best, but basically we need to suck it up and quit whimpering.

Color me curious. Cheney’s acting so strange lately. The angst is palpable as he gasps his way through recent interviews.

Do you think he’s desperate to see some concrete validation of his fear-mongering?

Do you think he’s dissembling? Or is he so far ’round the bend he prays for mayhem every night in his little bunion-footed pj’s?

Would he desire, would he even be likely to aid and abet such a dreadful thing?

I don’t trust him. Sick or sober, nuts or bolting, he makes my skin crawl.
