KERRY ELEVELD: The President supported the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act during the election. Now that same-sex couples can marry legally in five different states, what is the President doing to make sure those marriages are recognized at the federal level, and what’s the timeline for something like that?
ROBERT GIBBS: I. . . I will have to go check on that. I honestly don’t know the answer to that.
Kerry Eleveld reports:
President Obama took the strongest stance on the Defense of Marriage Act during the 2008 election — calling for full repeal, meaning same-sex marriages performed legally in one state should be legally portable to other states and the federal government should recognize those marriages.
As reported last month, a handful of lawmakers are crafting a bill that would repeal section 3 of DOMA, allowing the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages and perhaps even civil unions or strong domestic partnerships.
Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, has said repeal of DOMA is not a legislative priority.
According to the Bay Area Reporter, "The speaker said that her two legislative priorities for the LGBT community are passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the federal hate-crimes bill; the latter was introduced in Congress earlier this month. She indicated action on those items would occur before any effort to repeal DOMA…"
So, when will we see this promise fulfilled — or broken, as the case may be?

When is the California Supreme Court expected to rule on Prop H8?
“Backtrack” Barack strikes again…
It’s all a well thought out strategy to keep his powder dry for later. /s
in response to marriage portability. robert gibbs has to check on everything. this is why the bafoon has this positon.
Robert “Dopey” Gibbs and Barack “Bait n’ Switch” Obama, they are a good match.
From this article dated Monday, May 18, 2009

California voters eventually overturned same-sex marriages, and the state Supreme Court is expected to rule next week if that constitutional amendment was properly put before voters.
Mornin’ Teddy and Firedogs,
Teddy, you’ve probably seen it, a diary over at Big Orange detailing the tragic, brutal, and unconscionable treatment of a gay couple as one lay dying.
one can see in the comments – a wake up call for many on the progressive side who think “civil unions”, POA’s, etc. can blunt the damage done – uh – no !!!
a heartbreaking case for repeal of DOMA
Thanks.
Sho nuff.
Engels had an answer for this in 1893. He described the US political system as being made up of “two great gangs of speculators, who alternately take possession of the state power and exploit it by the most corrupt means and for the most corrupt ends.”
Looking at Obama as the lesser of two evils when it came to the 2008 election, it’s understandable that his policies once in office would differ significantly from his promises on the campaign trail. He doesn’t need to convince a bunch of DFHs to vote for him any more; he’s already neutralized the more radical wing of the party regardless of how loudly the wingnuts at FOX call him a socialist.
We aren’t his constituency and we never were no matter how much money he raised from the netroots. He always belonged to the establishment and to Wall Street.
I think james just really hit the nail on the head.
it’s like chris carney all over again.
that’s maybe a little hyperbolic, but not much considering the backtracks on:
state secrets
FISA
detainee rights
gitmo kangaroo courts
mountaintop removal
detainee photos
and now, perhaps, DADT.
Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?
No one should have been surprised by Carney. Even before he ran there was info out there that he had been part of Feith’s office in the Pentagon. THAT was his military experience…He was part of Feith’s disinformation organization, the Office of Special Plans, an outfit that took its name from a Third Reich agency, word for word.
I still say impeach Obama for failing to vigorously investigate and prosecute war crimes committed by his predecessor. That will get his attention.
