Professional Obama stalker and non-Notre Dame alumnus Alan Keyes has gotten acquainted with the South Bend Police Department.
Former Republican presidential candidate Alan Keyes was among scores arrested as anti-abortion activists continued daily marches on to the University of Notre Dame campus to protest President Obama’s commencement speech Sunday.
Among the Republican partisans in South Bend today are none other than Terri Schiavo’s self-appointed savior.
Randall Terry, founder of the controvesial anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, said he deliberately avoided arrest Friday so he could continue to lead protests.
Predictably, the ugliness of the protests — and the blatant, cynical politics of them — have rubbed a lot of students and South Bend residents the wrong way.
"They don’t have any connection to Notre Dame or South Bend. They’re just here to cause trouble."Chelsea Biggs, 19, who will start her sophomore year at Indiana University in the fall, agreed."One man, even if he is the president, is not going to make a legislative decision that ends abortion," she said. "I really think this is all about them getting attention."
And despite the fact that a) Obama won the Catholic vote; b) Obama’s approval rating is sky-high among Catholics; c) Obama won the Indiana county where Notre Dame is located; d) the vast majority of ND students and faculty as well as Catholics nationwide approve of Obama’s appearance at Notre Dame; and e) none of these "pro-lifers" objected when Georgetown awarded the pro-choice Giuliani an honorary degree or Boston College did the same for the pro-choice Condi Rice, we’ll keep hearing about Obama’s and Notre Dame’s "Catholic problem" for weeks.

Alan Keyes? What’s his relevance any more?
Oh, none.
Nothing to see here. Move on.
Right now ND grads are more concerned with turning their almost-worthless diplomas into work that does not involve asking “do you want fries with that?” not about the subtle points of the pro-life debate and Catholic Dogma.
Why does it seem that there’s a whole lot of extra coverage of these protests of Obama that was nowhere to be seen during any protests of Bush in the last 8 years? With the possible exception of Cindy Sheehan’s protests in Crawford.
But even then, it seemed TradMed’s coverage was a lot more mockery of Sheehan than they appear to show towards folks like Keyes and Terry.
Are these protesters going to protest all of the pro-choice students who receive degrees? I know it sounds absurd, but there is a precedent set for similar actions.
Pretty thought provoking article below.

The award is being introduced now. Both on cnn and webcast here.
Another issue to discuss is the fact that Bush received an honorary degree in 2001, and last time I checked, the Catholic church frowns upon executing hundreds of people.

Anti-abortion AND pro-torture? Seems like straddling that morality fence should start to chafe after awhile.
The talking head I heard was complaining about “honoring” someone out of tune with fundamentals of Catholicism. The others earned their degrees, they aren’t receiving them as an honor from the institution.
President Obama got a huge applause when he entered the building and the stage at Notre Dame and also got a huge applause when he got his honorary degree. Suck it neocons!
You’re sooooo 2001. /s
I think Alan Keyes is certifiable, not figuratively, but really. He has said and done some really crazy stuff.
Let them complain…no one is listening !
Geez, how many honorary degrees are there?
” Randall Terry, founder of the controvesial anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, said he deliberately avoided arrest Friday so he could continue to lead protests.”
So Terry does not get arrested but Keyes does the Black man always gets arrested!
Heh. Prez of ND speech is about healing divisions among those who are different.
LOL. Thanks for pointing that out.
Now that’s eihther the ultimate in Tone Deaf, or so cynical that it surpasses belief. Or just someone who subscribes to the Talking Snake.
Right wing Catholics are pro GOP and pro death penalty maybe we should protest them giving Condi, Rudy and their ilk degrees?
Naw would not be worth it these protests turn people off and our blogging about them tells more people nationwide about these unpopular protests than the local news would.
I don’t understand your point. He’s talking about the invitation to the U.S. prez and the controversy surrounding it. Why is that tone deaf?
Prolly because Obama doesn’t do horsey doovers on AF1 and pass out idiotic nicknames that make them all feel like they’re about to become Jr. Bonesmen.
this man has balls
Thanks BT.
Over at an ND football site, there is much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments.
The pro-forced child birthers are split over ND allowing a child-murderer to speak at commencement and, even worse, giving him an honorary degree.
Uh, from your post it sounded like he was ignoring the divisions created by his invitation… sort of like he was Marie Antoinette. Not that he was trying to facilitate a conciliation, but rather ignoring the schism his university had ignited by having the Randall Terry’s and Alan Keyes of the world show up to protest on behalf of embryos.
Sorry if I misunderstood. It’s a baaaad day in fishland for a regional pilot.
Protest on a street corner people look wave some might disagree with you on the issues.
Disrupt a Notre Dame graduation and your messing with something very important to students, parents and the townspeople who depend on the college to keep their town going.
The GOP just pissed off some middle class and well to do Catholic families.
We need the GOP to do more of this kind of protesting.
OK, gotcha. No, he was doing just the opposite, confronting the controversy head on with his putting the invitation in the context of Obama’s trying to heal differences.
Actually catholics think it’s okay to kill thousands of people so long as they are brown and believe in a different God.
Shouter interrupted Obama, gets drowned out by disapproving crowd.
The GOP’s aim is what? They want to work up the numbers of their protesters who are not afraid of arrest so that one day they will have enough protesters to shout down the President?
So that they can overwhelm the police? Were these nonviolent protests?
That’s their theory of “just” war.
I expect his best-selling book to be released by Zondervan any minute now “Twitter from the South Bend Jail”.
Day-um, that’s gotta piss off Fat Tony Scalia then.
The fact the hard core Catholic football fans are split is great news! These are Reagan Democrats and they are not all that cool with a Black President.
Normally someone fucks with a Notre Dame Graduation like Terry and Alan did they would be 100% against them drunk and yelling for their heads.
But Obama is African American and prochoice and only half are against him the GOP can’t win elections with those numbers.
Didn’t know you were a regional pilot. What do you think of the report released about the crash in Buffalo? Pilot was in her 20s, earning like $27,000, tired because she has to live across the country with her parents because she can’t afford a place of her own, and scared shitless of flying in the snow is what I heard, iirc. I thought it sounded irresponsible to put such a person in charge of such a flight.
It seems that the media keeps putting up this same woman “student” again and again as the one upset about Obama’s speech…she’s whining about how he “ruined her graduation” and that his presence violated Catholic dogma. Hmm! You’d think that with all the former governors supporting the death penalty, Bush, and others that have spoken there that Obama would not be an issue. She also stated that Obama was “the most anti-Catholic politician in recent history”.
That’s obviously not true.
weird thing, fox had on fr. jonathan morris, doing the ‘fox’ trot…then after that right before the president of nd went on, chris wallace said during the overview and reviewof protesters , that overall and appeared happpy to have him there. and not too many were not. comments like that the entire time and then he ended it at that.
color me shocked.
almost cut myself with my paring knife….lunch, celery for tuna.
guess it was apparent that the promotion of the protesters is not gaining an audience.guess it needed a ‘tag’ like t’teabagging’..
obama-
uh-oh here he goes through the minefield…the ‘g’ word..the ‘a’ word.someone just pinched their baby to make it wail during his ‘a’ word points.
When I was listening to the talking heads on cnn, one who was defending invitation was a priest, iirc, and he used the: some pro-lifers think life ends at conception. I nearly dropped my teeth. He was complaining about Catholicism becoming a one-issue religion.
It is my opinion, was raised catholic. Stick by what I said.
Not surprising. There are more priests like that than you might think.
Stupid bigotry. I opposed the war and am Catholic.
My view is that honorary degrees are handed out more to get publicity for the institution than for the benefit of the recipient. These degrees don’t open any new doors to the ones given them. I’m more concerned about the phony degrees from degree mills and uncredentialled or bogus religious schools. Lots of creationists out there claiming to be “Doctor” that don’t know jack.
I agree with you. Any person of faith should have opposed the war because God said “thou shall not kill.” I’m pretty sure you can’t have a war without killing.
Obama ties in nuclear war & death penalty to RC issues thru telling of Bernadine who was archbishop of Chicago when Obama was doing community organizing.
“that their faith inspired them to perform”
framed around works, feeding, helping others…
wow, that was really good.
I wouldn’t know. I was also raised RC but became atheist at age 13 so I have no contact with church.
Shhhh. You’re telling secrets that should not be spoken in public. *g*
Thank goodness there is the Lakers and Rockets.
These protesters are nothing more than attention whores. Especially Keyes and his buddy, serial adulterer and embezzler Randy Terrry!
Here’s a business idea for those of you who are web savvy: set up a site that sells commencement speeches. They’re all pretty much the same, just telling graduates what the world holds for them and what they must do to honor their degrees.
my best friend teaches at a catholic high school, and i heard that from her first..

‘temper our passions–snip-self-righteousness’…eww.
‘people of faith and no faith.’
wow..

I attended several meetings when I was at Notre Dame addressing whether the Viet Nam War was a just war. I assure you that the color of the skin of the Vietnamese was never mentioned.
I am worried that the GOP will have all the Sarah Crowds that followed Jon McCain will start drop the racism publicly and start hiding from the news crews by claiming to be anti abortion protesters.
That would indicate that someone in the GOP has brains and control of the crazies.
Yea? You should have heard the General at ETSU last week!
Sorta implicit doncha think?
Oh, I’ve heard it many times before, but never from a RC priest.
Huffpost has a bit about the top graduate being pro Obama and welcoming him is that not getting news coverage? If so the MSM is really in the tank on this one.
By the way, I wasn’t the only ROTC guy at those meetings.
Your response was better than mine would have been.
She was the First Officer, not the Captain, hence not “in charge” but supposed to be there to help and perform as a back-up. I’ll talk about it more off line if you’d like… there is a time to spend sharing my thoughts on the accident and that’s after the NTSB makes its findings, I think.
None of us make great money. There is a joke that goes like this: What’s the difference between a Large Pizza and a Regional Pilot? The large pizza can feed a family of four.
We all give up a lot of our family time, commute impossibly long distances, get crapped on for the most minor of things for near-poverty wages as “entry-level” pilots. Our rest times are EXACTLY what the FAA mandates and the airlines managment are always looking for a circumvent the rules if they can… maybe not so much anymore after the 3407 crash. Why do it? Because flying is a profession like no other… and it’s actually a fun job when you get thru the bullshit.
Maybe I should do a post on it? hmmmm….
And they kept show those crazy Hillary idiots during the campaign, don’t mean nothin.
Kind of funny to see Obama’s SS bodyguard wearing a gown.
she has, but not on national tv in the middle of an incendiary time.
When the time is right it would be great. It’s nice to get information from people who really know something about the topic they write about. :)
Thanks for the correction. I had thought she was the Captain, probably because I heard First Officer & thought that was the pilot.
Yes, please do a diary when the final NTSB comes out.
What was the time frame?
Oh shit, I missed that. Is he still there?
and what ‘thyme’ is it?
lakers 8 rockets nuttin
Dead American nuns in South America killed by American trained School for the Americas death squad grads liberation theology banned by the pope.
Freedom for white Poles from commies cool. Freedom for brown people not cool.
The Church did nothing for us and now the Protestants are making inroads with us.
please, please, pretty please.
here’s the live link eekahn gave for the ceremony still goin gon…
http://commencement.nd.edu/com…..nt-videos/
I’m class of ‘68. The meetings took place over the period ‘65 forward.
Sitting directly behind him.
Sounds like a idea:)
did they ‘ice’ the puck yet?
(browser very slow, too many tabs open)
i think you’re confusing political aggression with racial aggression.
gotcha, came home in 69
Microsoft beat you to it. It’s a Powerpoint template.
Freedom is freedom commies treat whites bad cool. Brown people treated bad by capitalists ok. Besides the Church and Notre Dame could have stuck up for the dead American Nuns and the Church wonders why nobody wants to be a Nun or Priest anymore.
Glad you guys are live blogging the commencement…I sat through more than 30 of those things during my teaching career and promised “never again” after retirement. Based on personal experience at a smaller regional state university, what’s happening at ND wrt national media is *not* what the admin/faculty at my former place would have wanted to see coming down the pike.
there was a lot more going on ‘htere’ than just that.
always is.
romero.
i’m not touchin’ the nun and priest shortage.
I thought the crowd at Notre Dame was very respectful today despite the few interruptions from hecklers.
