I saw a local TV interview with Norquist, who appeared to be really, not metaphorically, going mad. He was denouncing any and all public employees as dishonest, overpaid, lazy parasites, intentionally sapping the vitality of the nation. Yeah, I guess rabid foaming-at-the-mouth defamation of teachers, police and firemen will really go over well with the voters.

I have been reading some of the “new” info about the old Soviet Union that has come out since the fall of the USSR and the opening (for awhile, anyway) of records such as Stalin’s own archives, and the archives of the KGB?NKVD/MGB.

I have been struck, once again, by how similar the Repubs have become to the Commies/Bolsheviks (I put it that way because one of the early enemies to be destroyed was the Mensheviks, a less radical faction of the Communist Party of the USSR). The language of the FrontPage article is so similar to the language used in condemning perfectly loyal partymembers (the blogposts, like Malkin’s, not so much. Can she even write a sentence with multiple subordinate clauses?)

And, most of all, in what I’ve been reading most recently, the recognition that the reason for the Terror, the constant arrests and executions, came down to one, gaining/retaining power, in order to accomplish which it was necessary to two, have constant enemy. Or rather, constantly have an enemy.

It’s been noted before that the Repubs have been desperately searching for an enemy to replace (ironically) the Commies—but I haven’t seen much recognition that in their choosing the Democrats for their prime enemy, they are behaving exactly like the Soviet Communists.

Oh, and those old Soviet interrogators could tell us all a thing or two about forced, fake confessions.
I bet some retired KGB officers with good English and internet access are just shaking their heads in amusement over this “debate” we’re having about torture, whether it works, whether the information gotten is good, etc.

Yeah, there will a Republican to run against. It will be an extremely dangerous clown (Palin) or ruthless con-person (Romney or Jeb) or an abject tool and fool (Jindal).

I don’t like that situation, it is very dangerous, and I believe a danger to the country, to have those types get so close to such a powerful office.

I hope we can hold on until people like Crist, or Huntsman, or something like them, can build something out of the smoking rubble of the GOP.

I read people saying this appointment for Huntsman makes a big difference for 2012, but I do not see how. Huntsman has already been insulted and rejected by the base, he had very little chance for 2012. This is definitely a good move for him, I think, if he wants to do something in national politics after 2012.

He is a really good Republican candidate. His issue profile is not that far from Obama. He is likable, swats back at teh idiots when they run off the rails, and he leads with his chin.
If we’re to raise the level of debate, better to go up against some real competition. I would like for the Democrats to field someone who can beat a real opponent, not just the next clown in line.

The R Party is becoming a black hole. Since only 20% of Americans now identify themselves as Repubican, what is their party getting out of this? I have to assume that at least some of them are capable of reading the polls and apparently some are trying to shut Cheney up so what’s the gain?

I think yours is the more likely scenario… by then there will be a big tent democratic party and a bunch of regional tribe and caste-based parties. The northeastern CDP, the Dixiecrats, the Mormon Party, the Knights of Columbus/Catholic Alliance, the New Evangelical Taliban, the Urban/Suburban Hiphoppers, etc etc. Occasionally these localized wingnut gangs will band together into a coalition to make trouble for the sane majority. Purely on the basis of what would be more fun, being the US ambassador to China beats being governor of the most Republican state in a walk. Plus, for a guy with presidential ambitions, this is a great opportunity to (literally) distance himself from the whack-a-doos in his party while shoring up his “moderate” chops.
