Charles Krauthammer took the Hippocratic Oath. But spelled it wrong. The psychiatrist wrote in September 2006 that we needed to bomb Iran within one year or they’d bomb us. How’d that moral shortcut work out? He’s also had a long-time chubby for torture.
So why change? Krauthammer says the "ticking timebomb" scenario exists, and here’s the totality of his defense:
On Oct. 9, 1994, Israeli Cpl. Nachshon Waxman was kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists. The Israelis captured the driver of the car. He was interrogated with methods so brutal that they violated Israel’s existing 1987 interrogation guidelines, which themselves were revoked in 1999 by the Israeli Supreme Court as unconscionably harsh. The Israeli prime minister who ordered this enhanced interrogation (as we now say) explained without apology: "If we’d been so careful to follow the [1987] Landau Commission [guidelines], we would never have found out where Waxman was being held."
So is Krauthammer forgetting anything? Yeah, the bottom line:
Israeli forces located Wachsman in a West Bank house, which they stormed in an effort to free him, but his captors killed him as the raid began. One Israeli soldier and three kidnappers were also killed.
So the only example Krauthammer can come up with is one that failed. Well, a lot of people died, including the hostage, but I guess as long as there’s death, mission (and emission no doubt) accomplished. Oh, and torture that Krauthammer loves so much is still illegal in Israel, there is no "ticking timebomb" exception. Naturally Krauthammer also ignores the Bush Administration torturing people post-hoc to justify the deaths of thousands of people by coercing false confessions.

Only slightly off topic. Le Monde celebrated its 2,000th issue yesterday here in Paris by publishing a set of its front pages, the first of which is dated May 3, 1945, and covers the announcement of Hitler’s death. The announcement from Donitz proclaims that he ‘died heroically’ in action for the German people, and it goes on from there. Reading it at this distance reminded me of the stuff we were fed by the Bush administration for eight years.

The Will to Power is not enough. You need a plan based on facts not fantasy. You need a good manager to adjust the methods or even the ultimate goals of the plan and make them harmonize with reality.

I thought he’d learned… In “Fiscal Suicide Ahead” he says for President Obama to sustain his agenda and prevent national insolvency, he has to control health care and entitlement costs. Prof. Krugman, writing from Taipei, Taiwan gives us “Empire of Carbon,” and says China cannot continue producing greenhouse emissions at an escalating rate because the planet can’t handle the strain.

BTW, did anyone see Ron Paul’s son last night on Rachael? He’s starting a possible run for the senate and will probably get all his father’s backers. Plus, he’s young, good-looking and articulate. Does Charles write for them? Lets take the number of media people who write columns rate them Strong Left, Left, Moderate, Conservative and Malkin.
Then look at the number of columns written by each group and the number of papers and readers they reach.
I bet we find that as Newspapers went right Readership dropped off.
I bet we find that Conservative papers like Conservative radio, ClearChannel comes to mind are hurting the most.
Well my theory has one flaw I’m not sure there is a major paper in this country as Left as FDL, Koz, C&L etc.

Olberman has tried to shame Hannity who said he’d be waterboarded to raise money for a Service-related charity. Olberman pledged $1000/second that Hannity could stand the waterboard, and to date, dear old Sean has reneged on his pledge.
Don’t know if it’s hydro-phobia or Keith-o-phobia keeping blabbermouth Hannity from his appointed drowning, but he’s a big no-show to date. Guess that big yap of his is too small for a bit of water.

The show had a segment the other day, with Wm. Buckley, Jr. on his book about his parents. Scarborough took the conversation to Mika’s parents. He told a story that her mother, an artist, was given a radio tuned to a station where she could listen to Mika. She never turned it on, saying that she had other things she had to do.

It’s no secret to any of my readers that I despise Charles Krauthammer. I never liked his writing. He is a neocon. He’s vicious (he ridiculed Christopher Reeve for giving seriously disabled people “false hope). And his views of the Israeli-Palestinian question are repulsive. He hates the Palestinians and would fight to the last Israeli to defeat them.
And then there was that experience with him in my synagogue in 2001.* It was Yom Kippur. The rabbi was giving his sermon only to be interrupted by a bellowing obnoxious Krauthammer who was shouting him down for expressing a hope for peace between Israelis and Arabs.
* via WM: About three years ago, I saw Krauthammer flip out in synagogue on Yom Kippur. The rabbi had offered some timid endorsement of peace — peace essentially on Israel’s terms — but peace anyway. Krauthammer went nuts. He actually started bellowing at the rabbi, from his wheel chair in the aisle. People tried to “shush” him. It was, after all, the holiest day of the year. But Krauthammer kept howling until the rabbi apologized. The man is as arrogant as he is thuggish. Who screams at the rabbi at services? For advocating peace?
