That’s right, tonight, let’s talk about Dick.
There has been a great deal of excellent reporting on this site by the likes of Marcy, Jane, and Spencer, among others, showing that there is now pretty solid evidence that the CIA misled those in Congress tasked with oversight—that the Bush Administration waited until after it began torturing detainees to inform the likes of Representative Nancy Pelosi and Senator Bob Graham about these “enhanced” programs. . . and, even then, it is possible they withheld important facts. Yet, pretty much every news segment I catch is starting and ending the argument with whether Speaker Pelosi is hiding something, and whether it is over the line to accuse the CIA of lying.
I got news for ya’, it isn’t even close to over the line—but that’s not where I want to go tonight. . . .
Because before you get to Pelosi, or to Graham, or Jane Harman, or a host of other congressional leaders who in good time should be held accountable for their action or inaction during the Bush years—before you get to any of that—one thing had to happen. . . .
Someone had to order the torture. Someone had to sign off on the program in its design phase, someone had to render a group of detainees, hold them outside the reach of US law, and someone had to give the order to have them tortured.
I could, at this point, throw out the name George W. Bush—he was president at the time, after all—but we now have pretty good evidence that the real authority for waterboarding (to name but the most talked about of many illegally brutal “techniques”), the real orders to “do that,” and “do that again,” came from the vice president. The order to torture came from Dick Cheney.
Let me say that again: Dick Cheney ordered torture.
Not Nancy Pelosi; Dick Cheney.
Before there were any briefings of any Democrats, there was the torture—a violation in-and-of itself—and that torture was ordered by Republican Vice President Dick Cheney.
And to take it one step further, that torture wasn’t ordered up to save us from some imagined “ticking bomb” scenario (not that torture would even solve that particular problem, and not that, even if it did, it could be justified), it was ordered to make detainees produce a specific, desired piece of information (or disinformation). Dick Cheney wanted a connection between the attacks of September 11, 2001 and Iraqi leader Sadam Hussein, and so Cheney told interrogators contractors to torture detainees until they stated that there was a link between al-Qaeda and Iraq.
They signed off on a reverse-engineered program designed to help US troops survive “brain washing,” and then used that program to elicit false confessions.
All at the behest of tonight’s big fucking elephant, Dick Cheney.
I know all of that has been said before, but I felt like I needed to say it again. What do you need to say about this week’s execrable elephants?

Dick dick dick, is that all you ever talk about?
they aint no dick. you are correct greg – dick is the biggest fucking elephant on parade.
Isn’t it high time somebody cleaned up after that elephant?
Take it back from the messaging monster that is the GooperAcousticWaveMachine – hey, let’s talk about who ordered people on this planet to be tortured. Who used it to manufacture a false case for an invasion of a country that threatened us not at all.
Please.
Thanks, Gregg – Thanks, Rachel.
Dick is an old scared elephant. Dick doesn’t want to spend the little time he has left keeping himself company in a tiny cell. Can you imagine spending 24/7 with Dick?
Say what you will about Richard Cheney, he was great in Gran Torino.
To The Hague! And speak on behalf of the Dicks of the world, we renounce, denounce, repudiate, condemn, and deplore Dick Cheney and do hereby cast him out from the fellowship of Dicks. Henceforth he shall be known as Richard “The Dickless” Cheney.
Richard The Little
dickless cheney is how i will refer to that draft dodging cowardly bastard forevermore. thanks doc.
But don’t you have to include, with whatever name, Tagalong Idiot Boyking George? Dick’s orchestration may have been his only successful plan in his life of “incompletes” and deferments.
You know, its true. Us nasty, foul mouthed liberals progressively get worse and worse.
Richard the Chicken Hearted.
Maybe because they have fouled and shamed our country?
Thanks Gregg. Good summary.
Howdy pups.
no more dicks in the white house
Let’s weed the dicks out.
I’m sick of hearing about what Pelosi knew and when she knew it. Who ordered the f’ing torture and when did they order it? Why was bushco trying to extract false information to spread to americans to justify illegal wars and who’s idea was that?
Interesting isn’t it how our awe inspiring “liberal” media keeps missing the central point. Regardless of what Pelosi or any other Democrat may or may not have known, Cheney and Bush ordered these war crimes. If others knew and did nothing, they should also pay the cost, but the full burden lies squarely on the shoulders of the Busheviks
Damn! There goes my dinner invite.
Ya gotta understand, the WH has just had a lot of bad experiences with people named Dick. Nixon…Cheney…
Has anybody else contemplated the tragic irony in the term “enhanced interrogation technique?”
Gilded or no, we ain’t talkin’ about no lily here…
Morris
dick tator
We are so far thru the looking glass with language…we are talking about the Admin who advertized on an “humble foreign policy.” Yep
For a couple years I used “Mighty Dick Tater” as an e-mail handle.
So, are dick taters like fingerlings?
BushCo spent millions on advertising consultants, focus groups, etc.. No big deal, they probably kept tens of millions of tax dollars in a drawer labeled “petty cash.”
Thanks Gregg.
On a side note, I can’t believe how badly Obama got outflanked on this.
Depends on what yer dippin’ ‘em in, I s’pose.
8-)
the cheney style is called fuckyoulings
I think it’s time to bestow honorary Republican membership on the British Parliament.
Naturally. After all, what is New Labour but Blue Dogs with a better pedigree?
And there is the question of what what she was supposed to do with the information that she may or may not have received – which I assume will have been highly classified, and which she could not therefore spread here there and everywhere?

between her and shelia blair – they sure as hell would right some wrongs
ack. sorry if i killed the thread. *** slinks off to bed ***
wasn’t anything ya did tex – usually slows down about this time
Let’s imagine this. What EVEN IF Pelosi had come forward after the aide had told her secondhand (didn’t the aide hear it from Harmon?) about the water boarding in February or March of 2003? Pelosi could have somewhat protected her from the “legal” fallout from using the “Floor immunity” rights of the Constitution…maybe.
But she would definitely have inherited the storm. Probably either Rahm or Steny would be Minority Leader right now.
In addition one can bet that Bush-Cheney would have been out for victims. The aide would have been hunted down and disemboweled publicly as a “National Security traitor”. He would have seen his work for the Federal government terminated and likely would have confronted jail time. And Harman, who wasn’t supposed to discuss that information with the aide [how can non-specialists on the Constitution or other issues acquire the needed imput without consultation?] would have also been politically, if not criminally, eviscerated.
Cheney and gang would have droned on about how the water boarding was simply what SERE did, that it was only done once or twice, that it produced critical information about imminent attacks. They would not have released the documents to show that SERE guidelines were not followed, that the legal advisories granted the power to go far beyond the law and treaty, that AZ was drowned 86 times and KSM 186 times.
And after vilifying the Democrats for treason incessantly the American people would have likely won their “permanent Republican majority”.
Where’d everybody go?
i dunno, although it is a lovely spring friday night here in the pacific northwest
VP Dick is a wiennie
About the most remarkable part of the whole story seems to be that even with torture, we can infer Dick’s guys still couldn’t get a single prisoner to say in any convincing way that there was an AQ-Iraq link.
Can you imagine how pissed a Dick R. Bruce C. must have been at that point…
i figure veep dick got used to being a big dick and he’s not adjusting well to being an old has been of a dick.
Just watcged Rachel’s report…she hammered it.
The new Dem perspercasity…tell it like it is. Just beaytiful truth…music to my ears. If you bad you wear it. Go Rachel.
Cheney was the big swinging dick of big carbon and the resource wars to keep the MIC fired up…he has the connects…will the wingers throw him under the bus….they owe him big time?
I guess you could say he is their Dick. S)
Dick Cheney should be behind bars for the rest of his life.
I need to make it even more clear;
Cheney was informed by every single intelligence gathering agency in the country, there is NO link between AL qaeada and Saddam, the FBI told him, the CIA told him, Clark told him, EVERYONE told him
he ordered torture SPECIFICALLY to get information HE KNEW WAS FALSE
this is not, “to prove a link” this was “to get a lie that you know is a lie”
here’s the scenario, not verbatum but this IS what happened
when cheney told the cia to get the information the cia told him, there is no information, there was no link
cheney told them, “use high pressure methods”
the cia said, “that will give us false information”
and cheney said;
“so?”
if the republicans want to save their party they better cut dick loose and FAST
THEY better demand investigations
if bush wants to save ANY “legacy” he thinks he can save, he BETTER disclaim what cheney did in on his behalf and in his name, he BETTER call for the investigation into these events
bush can actually take the high ground, say he was lied to by cheney/rumsfeld and let those cookies land where they might but he BETTER just cut this guy loose
Al Nashiri certainly never claimed as such. He may have been the first one water boarded. They got him to confess to the USS Cole attacks, a host of other efforts to attack shipping (including one to crash a commercial jet into a ship…good luck arranging the logistics on THAT!). They got him to confess to rocket attacks and bombings in Saudi Arabia. They even got him to confess that bin Laden had obtained A NUCLEAR WEAPON!
Al Nashiri recanted all these confessions and several more (that apparently were so absurd that even the Pentagon would not charge him with them. Eventually the Pentagon dropped all charges but three…as they realized the judge was not going to allow anything but independent evidence but not the confessions under torture.
So they said that al Nashiri used a false passport, had been involved with making bombs, and had obtained a small boat before the USS Cole attacks from which he had “performed surveillance”. He apparently didn’t even get the boat that was used in the Cole attack.
In February of this year the military judge “dismissed all charges, without prejudice”. That’s how bad the case against Najeri was, without the torture.
Gregg:
This morning you are the”carpenter”for you hit the nail right on the head.
