To put things in perspective, the Bush torture policies, as depraved as they are, pale in comparison with the other assaults on humanity by the Bush crime mob.

- the Poppy-led murder of JFK
- the stealing of the 2000 election
- 9/11
- the unprovoked war on Iraq

Pity that more “Democrats” aren’t in fact democratic socialists. Perhaps then the U.S. would already have universal single payer healthcare, high speed rail, energy independence, a living wage for all workers, accountability for criminal corporatists and politicians, the ability of workers to organize in their workplace, a fair trade policy, the ability to actually manufacture products rather than “instruments”, of course the list could go on and on and on …………..

Our government is putting the finishing touches on the last chapter of the American experiment in democracy. It’s headed down the drain now and the winners are lining up to take their prizes as the rest of americas head off to slaughter and painful deaths.

The worst is yet to come.

American exceptionalism at its best!

Ain’t it just? It would appear the BSA has been taken over by the far-far-far reich wingers…just what we need….kids with that kind of training growing up to work in law enforcement.

Ya know….I used to have such respect for policepeople. After seeing and reading about the abuse some of them heap on suspects (including the use of tasers), I have absolutely no trust for anyone in a uniform – and never will again. Dog help us all because a lot of the people the military has recruited and trained are gonna come home and join law enforcement.

The point is that Obama wants to keep the torture “option on the table” and releasing those photos would so outrage the world that he’d have to take step that he doesn’t want to take to make sure that this nation never tortures again. In this regard, he is on Dick Cheney’s side. “Torture is sometimes the only option.”

Morning all,

Scouting used to teach useful stuff like how to use a compass and read a map, and start a fire with flint and steel. Today folks can’t get anywhere w/o a talking box (GPS) on the dashboard telling them every turn. My neighbor thinks north is straight up in the air, south is straight down, and east and west change like on the weathervane. surrounded by stoopid here.

Those wild and crazy Masters of the Universe, the Bilderbergers are up to their old tricks. These are the ultra rich neo-conservative banksters who admit they want to destroy the ”sovereignity” of the our Democracy and replace it with a corporate dictatorship. They also admit they are planning a world wide depression to help achieve this.

Our corporate journalists such as Broder and Cokie Roberts (and her so-called journalist husband) do not report on this. Many of the establishment publishers and reporters attend these meetings secretly and actually help carry out the New World Order agenda. Even, the Chief of Bankster Fraud, Tim Geithner may attend.

The President of the World Bank Robert Zoellick and Tim Geittner the US Treasury Secretary are reported by sources in The Times report as having ”unspecified business” in Europe for the next two days.

The agenda of the Bilderberg Group this year is reported to be looking at a ”prolonged agonising depression that dooms the world for decades of stagnation decline and poverty, or an intense but shorter depression that paves the way for a new sustainable economic world order, with less sovereignty but more efficiency”.

i think this has to do with that thing i heard on the diane rehm show a few years ago….wehre weiderlander or whatever his name is, misspoke about how many ‘rendition’ sites there are….i think if they release the info, we will then know how many locations there were. i think that’s what it is…

i finally found the radio show last night, thanks to hugh giving me the name in april. haven’t had time to pursue it yet….

i think that’s why, they release the stuff, they hafta say where it was located. gonna come out…remember we had locations that were in countries where it is illegal and violated treaties with other countries?

yep…my antennae are up and twitchin’ and have been ever since i heard him say it.

no trouble, am happy to try to help.

it’s a little complicated because the official transcripts are usually not released to the public until weeks or (more usually) months later.

if you have access to cq.com or federal news service that do fast transcripts or access to lexis which carries cq and fns or the $$$ to pay for same you are golden (a good university library may be the ticket). very rarely someone will post an entire hearing transcript on the web (wapo and nyt do this sometimes, might want to try some googling with text from options below)

for the rest of us, all i can suggest – and this may be sufficient for your needs this morning (fingers crossed) – is cspan since they carried the hearing yesterday. here are the links for part 1 and part 2:

http://www.c-spanarchives.org/…..d=286307-1
http://www.c-spanarchives.org/…..d=286307-2

option 1:

under the flash “play” button in the search text box enter a word to search on. that might work, but if no responses come up that doesn’t mean it wasn’t said. i’ve found some pretty big errors in their transcripts, including missing sentences, but i suppose that is to be expected for a fast (and probably unchecked) transcript.

option 2:

click on the flash “play” button and wait for the new webpage to load. there will be a button (bottom left corner) “Show Transcript” – check it with a click. now you should see a bit of the transcript on the right hand side of the webpage – it’s just the bit of transcript for the current video segment. go to different places in the video and you will see different bits of the transcript.

now here’s a tricksy bit….. go to view source on your web browser and you will be able to see (as well as cut and paste) the whole thing. sadly it is not in a very friendly form and is in all caps – and don’t forget it is not very accurate, so if you find the spot you are looking for i recommend you give it another listen to check (and probably correct) the transcript.

Interestingly enough, I said something similar to my spouse last night. What’s in those photos that they don’t want us to see/know? It isn’t the torture itself, as everyone agrees that these aren’t as bad as what we’ve already seen, so there’s something else there that they don’t want us to get ahold of.

From the very beginning of his national political career, we have heard from Obama’s friends and associates that he is a pragmatic man (a word also often applied to Henry Kissinger, the godfather of RealPolitik), not a principled idealist. Every day we see more evidence of this. Obama has the oratorical ability to sound principled when he speaks, but where the rubber meets the road, he has yet to take a single principled stand since his election.

So, after 235 years, we are down to a choice between the lunatic fringe wingnuts and crooks on the Republican side, and unprincipled “pragmatists” on the Democratic side. Obama and most of the Dems either have no core principles that they won’t back down from, or are willing to forsake their principles in search of some compromise that will “work.” What we need is somebody who will stand up and motivate us to follow his principled path, not someone more concerned with “success” through compromise with the unprincipled opposition.

Where does President Obama really stand? What issue won’t he back down on? I have yet to see one.

Every time unrestrained and unregulated Capitalism is tried in this country, it ends in disaster. The only savior of Capitalism each time it stumbles is somebody like FDR, who is willing to regulate the Capitalist cowboys and temper Capitalism’s crueler excesses with a little social democracy (Socialism, if you prefer the word). Kind of ironic, when you think about it, that the only way we have been able to survive the repeated failures of Capitalism is by tempering it with Socialism for a while.

Socialism and Capitalism don’t have anything to do with democracy, as such. Both are able to exist in democratic countries and in authoritarian tyrannies. Although, ironically, pure Socialism is more in tune with the democratic ideal of the People as Sovereign, since it is an economic system in which, when implemented in a democratic wrapper, the People have control of the means of production and delivery of services. In a Capitalist system, that control is retained by a powerful corporate oligarchy that acts in its own interest, usurping the Sovereignty of the People (as we have seen from Enron to AIG). Capitalism is, at its very core, at best an uneasy companion to Democracy, and at its worst, is a fatal corrupter and destroyer of Democracy.

Also ironically, the basic definition of Fascism is a system where the private corporate oligarchy and the government work together, hand in iron glove, for the benefit of the corporate elite. It is hard to describe the last 8 years of the Bush administration without realizing that what the Republican ideal is is nothing more than a “soft” Fascism (where the people go along willingly and you don’t need strutting Black Shirts to enforce the system).

It is no accident that, as one of Mussolini’s top advisors remarked, “Fascism should more accurately be called ‘Corporatism’.” (often mistakenly credited to Mussolini himself).

When Socialism isn’t co-opted by tyrants who claim to be acting in the “name” of the People, but is implemented in a truly democratic system, where the government represents the agency by which the People exercise their Sovereignty, it is the best of both worlds. Just ask the Norwegians, who are flourishing now – even as the Capitalist countries are sinking into the tar pits.

I think it only fair that, if the GOP claims the right to “rebrand” the Democratic Party, we should rebrand the GOP as the “Republikkkan Hate-mongering and Child Molesting Party.”

Works for me…
