Hass was arrested and taken in for questioning immediately after crossing the border, for violating a law which forbids residence in an enemy state. She was released on bail after promising not to enter the Gaza Strip over the next 30 days.
Under Israeli law, Israeli journalists are not allowed to enter Gaza and Hass had been arrested in December on the same charge.
The arrest came one day after Israeli authorities "closed down an official Palestinian media center that had been set up in East Jerusalem for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI:"
The Palestinian media center was closed on the order of the Israeli minister of internal security, citing a clause in a 1994 law banning all activity of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem or elsewhere “in the state of Israel.” Official Palestinian activities in Jerusalem have been similarly barred in the past.
So much for freedom of the press.

Thanks for keeping us abreast of the other hot spots, Siun.
thanks siun, amira hass is one of my very favorite reporters.
Thanks for the update. It certainly doesn’t look as though we will get any help from obama and rahm in trying to get the Israel/Palestine problem cleared up in my lifetime.
Hmmm. The lone-democracy in the region…
Thanks, Siun.
Fuck the Israeli government and its apologists.
AIPAC and every other Zionist organization in the US, whether or not they receive money from the Israeli government should be required to register as agents of a foreign country under FARA (Foreign Agent Registration Act, as amended). These people lobby extensively for policies favourable to and financial aid, primarily military, for the Israeli government.
wait a minute!
since when does the gov of israel recognize palestine as a “state” – enemy or not? i thought the official line (bs lie) was “disputed territories”
whoops
The Israeli government is arresting protesters as well as journalists and recently critically wounded an American protester, Tristan Anderson. http://www.etaiwannews.com/etn…..g=eng_news
My question is, is this new behavior or has it always been like this and we just didn’t know it? Is the US government inquiring into the critical wounding of Tristan Anderson?
Yes, no.
A state with all of the responsibilities and none of the rights?
Amira Hass is a great reporter and an amazing human being.
