Sheldon sounds like he’s gonna bring it today.
"I hope what America will learn [from the hearing] is that the facts that were alleged in the torture memos are very likely not true," Whitehouse told MSNBC Tuesday. "The legal theories were contested even by Bush Administration lawyers who weren’t in on the fix, and a little bit about what the consequences are for lawyers who commit professional malfeasance."
Asked why Whitehouse had sought to take a leading role and hold hearings on the issue, an aide noted that the Rhode Island senator grew up the son of a Foreign Service officer family in Laos and Cambodia around the time of the Vietnam war, and has thought a lot from those experiences about America’s role in the world and how it’s perceived.

When does the hearing start?
Is there an audio feed link? (My satellite dish doesn’t like streaming vid so much… )
Question all the research I’ve read says a man will say anything under torture. Jesse Ventura said he could get Darth to confess to murder in an hour of water boarding.
With facts like these available to the government Jesse was a Navy Seal and was tortured as part of his training.
Why didn’t the government lawyers make use of this research? Did they base their legal opinions in facts or just weird legal theories sans facts?
Ok to be fair to the lawyers the legal theories used to justify torture seem as Funny as the facts about torture working that Darth keeps mentioning.
watching sheldon’s expression, he really looks like he’s got alot to unload, popcorn at the ready
Would be great if he got former navy seal Jesse Ventura to testify and make a 60 minute demonstration.

I am so livid at how the right-wing extremists continue to frame this debate. I don’t care if torture is effective (which it isn’t), I don’t care if some Democrats knew about it, but were too spineless to do anything (they probably did). Torture is wrong. And we’re better than that. Well now, thanks to BushCo., I have to qualify that we’re SUPPOSED TO BE better than that.
Any other argument is superfluous.
My kids don’t get away with the “she told me to” or “he didn’t stop me” excuse and they are usually just responsible for some minor property damage, not the systematic torture of other human beings.
The torture story keeps dragging on and on the GOP PR men are all Dead?
I mean WTF this story is killing the GOP and its not going away. Just get Darth and a few NeoCons to take the fall get a plea deal and they can share a Nice Club Fed jail cell.
The longer this story stays in the news the more the GOP loses. Every other time you hear the word GOP you hear Torture its Pavlovian Training the GOP is being Branded Negatively to torture.
Pretty soon people will hear the word GOP and automatically think negative of the next words that follow.
The GOP knows this they have AD Men…but someone is over ruling them?
Hell, waterboarding was probably like taking a break for Seals!
Thank goodness Emptywheel will be liveblogging this hearing later, because I’ve got an appointment at 10:00 am and can’t be on hand to watch.
Hope somebody uploads this to YouTube, too.
BTW, if you haven’t donated to Organic Blogging to support Emptywheel, now’s a good time; there are surely going to be more hearings ahead, more documents to chase, possibly courtroom drama to be documented. It’s going to take money to pay for airline tickets, accounts for research tools, storage space on servers, so on, and today’s hearing is just a foretaste of what’s to come. For the price of a couple of lattes you can offset the cost of a memory stick or part of a month’s fees with PACER — and you already know you are going to get both that rare commodity called the truth, and some serious entertainment.
Like takin’ a nap in a rainstorm. Without instructors throwin’ flash bangs into the tent at zero dark thirty.
Not really, and they just had a very abreviated version of what was done to detainees. Additionally I don’t think SERE Training lasted as long as the detainees were kept awake. I will ask my son when we speak next.
One thing that hasn’t gotten enough press is the Israeli inolvement in training U.S. to torture. I understand that Israel has quite the sophisticated program.

Jesse teed off on Darth and also on Norm Coleman. Interesting guy, our former gov. I’ll give him this. I think he tells it like it is, for the most part. His eccentricity brings that into question in many (most?) minds, which actually is unfortunate.
I’m looking forward to this one. Whitehouse also tells us, though, that today will just be the first act in what will be an extended process.
Waiting for Cheney’s response to what will come out today will be fascinating. He’s already so worked up that after more information comes out he may make it all the way to incoherent babbling.
*g*
The US has adopted many of the IDF’s methods. Let us not forget the IDF is the successor to the Stern Gang, Irgun and Haganah, a bunch of thugs turned terrorists.
I think Cheney isn’t incoherent at all. I think he’s revealing quite a lot, and hope he’ll keep talking.
It’s drowning,” Ventura responded. “It gives you the complete sensation that you are drowning. It is no good, because you — I’ll put it to you this way, you give me a water board, Dick Cheney and one hour, and I’ll have him confess to the Sharon Tate murders.”
Thanks for the link. They are so friggin’ stupid. All te bogus confessions this produces only make things harder ’cause our people have to sort out the truth from the bullshit.
Ah, so he’d be channeling George W. Bush?
I’ve heard about the IDF program only in passing. Do you know any of the specific techniques they use?
In todays testimony an FBI whistleblower is to testify that Gonzalez imposed brutal techniques that stopped information flow from detainee.

ws just telling somebody the same thing yesterday. keep it up, Dick. He must ahve a planned response for down the road when it comes out that he’s full of shit. or will he just retreat to FOX and keep repeating the same lies?
Not their “interrogation” techniques, no.
Ding.
Once the shit really starts hitting the fan will we see Scar, Hannity, Will and all the other neocon bubbleheads all fort up over at Faux?
Oh, he’s definitely damaging his cause with what he’s said so far, but I think further revelations will frustrate him greatly. He’s been so used to orchestrating everything himself that he just can’t handle having someone else call the shots and expose what he has done under so many layers of secrecy. I expect a meltdown from him and want a front-row seat when it happens.
This will be quite the hearing today. I will be on the road all day and will be checking in tonight to get the blow by blow, so to speak. Go Whitehouse.
Tomorrow PBO will be in our town. I will see him along with about 1500 of my best friends. We will be talking credit cards.
Israel trained America to torture? Siun know this? She’s unofficially on top of everything bad happening to the Iraqi people for the Lake.
But what I really wanna know (and I can see it on FOX, I’m sure): What (if anything)does Ms. California think?
He’s widely touted for knowing how to manipulate the bureaucracy, so I suspect he has many plants who will release info that supports him. Don’t count him out quite yet.
Yeah, I don’t have links, but think I heard it in one or more Scott Horton (the other one) interviews on antiwar.com.
Here’s a link from 2004 that came up with a quick google about IDF training U.S. in interrogation.
Ms. California Antigay Topless girl vs Megan McCain Progay? got a voice in the GOP cause she’s McCain’s daughter.
The Future of the GOP what little of the youth vote the GOP has and the future direction of the party hangs in the balance.
Sooner or later they will fight.
Bill Maher with Naomi Klein, Matt Taibbi and Reza Aslan discuss the advisability of torture trial. Good clip. Taibbi and Klein rock!
Here’s another from counterpunch. Also from 2004.
Huh?
Imagine that. Using history and context and perspective and all that thinking stuff.
When the combined IQ of the Rethug leadership is 3 below plant life thinking is very threatening.
Your mouth to Dog’s ear!
Thanks bookmarked and Israel might be up on war crimes if Darth starts to sing.
Either Obama punishes war crimes or the UN might try to remove us from the UN Security Council in which case we lose our UN veto.
Just because something Has Never been Done does not mean its impossible.
First of all it was a joke, secondly, it was about Seal training not SERE training.
You’re daydreaming about the UN doing anything. UN R US.
unofficially? right
In response to Beerfart liberal at 28.
Miss California is anti gay the press made a big thing about it but she says her antigay position is the result of her strong Christian beliefs. Then the press found her Christian topless photos.
Megan McCain has been saying the GOP should be more progay I’m not sure I believe her sincerity but considering that Megan and Miss California are both young, blond and GOP with differing views and have both been in the press lately.
I’m expecting a cat fight winner decides the future of the GOP.
I guess so she does seem to be the first one out with the horrible stories from Iraq.
Doesn’t seem to me that someone has a regular headliner spot is unofficial, at least not here.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
I’m not votin’ for Charlie Crist. That’s official.
Mornin’ Blue Texan and Firedogs,
I liked how he set expectations for the hearing and how today is all about ‘opening statements’
for those unfamiliar – Senator Whitehouse was both a State AG and a USAA – with several rather showy public corruption scalps on his belt. I give DiFi props for letting an actual prosecutor run this particular show.
Looking forward to his giving Bybee et all some enhanced prosecution techniques
I’ve a feeling this is not going to be yer basic “show” hearing for the benefit of the rubes as so many since the election have.
China owns our debt they want Taiwan getting us out of the UN security council helps them.
The Arab world has a very large young population that wants jobs they are not getting failing that they seem to want to get religion. And overthrow their American friendly governments if the Arabs stick us they buy themselves time.
Latin America is going Left Ecuador has a huge lawsuit against an American oil company, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Etc etc.
If the Worlds Economy collapses the UN will either change or go the way of the League of Nations.
I think we are all worried about America’s economy here, what we don’t talk enough of is what happens if our economy fails and takes the world’s economy with it?
Ok hmmm? resident expert
had me a little chuckle when Kos wrote a mash note to Club for Growth ’bout their support of Rubio – and the very next day they begin the Crist bashing.
although I was shocked to see Cornyn evince actual learning (from the Specter jump) by coming out immediately for Crist
ok, shocked but giggling just the same
there ya go
Thank you, senator. Your parents raised a real patriot. Bring it with teeth and I will build a statue.
It’s interesting however that Zelikow reacted to reports regarding the Israeli and British use of torture (re. Sein Fein/IRA) to actually question the viability in gaining useful information. I think that these studies showed that the tortures gained false confessions, and implicated an increasingly wider pool of innocent people.
I was watching this great show…and one of the witnesses stated that the memos got their reasoning from Medicare’s definition on pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF???????????
That in its self just incredible!
here we go again…hes introducing Zelikow…
I do know a lot of strippers (don’t ask…) are Republicans or libertarians. They don’t like the taxation of their tips. And many are quite manipulative, mercenary and have the capability of separating what they “do” and what they “are”. Many claim they are Christian, and it’s a bit weird to see some naked gal writhing on a platform with a little crucifix around her neck. The believe in the whole “Jesus died to wash me of my sins” thing. So Prejean doesn’t faze me in the least.
