This year is it for me on the tomatoes; if they don’t do well, I’ll not try anymore. Love the idea of the variety that are available (if you buy plants/seeds someplace other than a Lowe’s/WallyWorld) but having to buy soil and compost, etc. that go along with the activity make the “grow ‘em yourself” a *very* expensive proposition. Planning to keep an eye out wrt the local markets this year to see what tomato varieties they’re growing. Am desperately trying to keep the potatoes going because there is absolutely *nothing* better than “new” potatoes straight out of the ground.

My white pansy pots didn’t do well.. Each time they started to thrive, weird weather got them. Now they’re bolting, so that’s it for the season other than herbs and a green leaf lettuce pot that appears to have about a week left. Gave up on tomatoes some time back - heartbreakers for me and I’ve got great farm sources.

I’m greatly impressed you catch and pick crabs. Luck to you!

Back to my book - 1934 brit mystery, a true period piece.

There are still several fish markets that carry local seafood depending on the season. Soft shell crabs have been available at one of them recently….they have several tanks so they can control and know when they sluff off and freeze any excess for later sale. I don’t eat crab in restaurants - only what I catch myself. Also usually only eat shrimp I know to be locally caught.

Have been fighting aphids on the pansies and have gone ahead and ditched most of them. Had lettuce and spinach in pots but it has reached the bolt/bitter stage. No luck with trying snow peas in pots on the deck….likely they need more dirt depth. Trying a few potatoes for the first time and battling the forkin’ cut worms and slugs on them. Have maybe half-dozen varieties of tomatoes in large pots; hope they have enough soil as well. Trying some squash and pumpkins in pots….will see how that works out. The year I put squash in ground the borers ruined them. Like I said, if I plant it the bugs and other diseases will find them.

Raining too hard Sat to check out the farmers market. Supposed to be high strawberry season, doubt this rain is helpful now.

Years ago had local crab picked at Salter Path. Best ever. Recently saw something indicating crab there was now shipped in from foreign parts. Related to labor and gasoline costs iirc :-(

What are you planning to grow?

Speaking of bike riding…..think I’ll go pedal a bit and listen to the birds wake up; likely some deer out soon having an early breakfast. Y’all have a good day!
